LIVE: Trump’s Defense Continues
We’ll hear from Dershowitz and Starr today.
President Donald Trump’s attorneys will continue their opening arguments at 1 p.m. ET in front of the Senate.
Day Six
Trump lawyer Ken Starr had an interesting speech to say the least. He basically advocated to get rid of impeachment, calling it obsolete.
Trump impeachment attorney Ken Starr: "The Senate is being called to sit as the high court of impeachment all too frequently. Indeed we're living in what I think can be aptly described as the age of impeachment." https://t.co/jeOnUlIHQm pic.twitter.com/sqE7s80bKp

Recap
The defense team still has 22 hours left to present their case.
Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz and Ken Starr will address the Senate today.
We do not know yet if the defense attorneys will bring up The New York Times story about former National Security Advisor John Bolton. A new book of his claims that Trump ordered Bolton "to keep military aid to Ukraine frozen in a bid to coerce political favors."
However, the story strengthened the moderate Republicans to push the chamber to call for witnesses. We knew Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Maine Sen. Susan Collins, and Utah Sen. Mitt Romney leaned in that direction.
Collins and Romney said this morning they definitely want witnesses.
Collins released this statement:
My statement on Bolton developments. pic.twitter.com/3M59J7suts
— Sen. Susan Collins (@SenatorCollins) January 27, 2020
Romney told reporters that he wants Bolton to testify. He also thinks other GOP senators will join his demand as well.
The Democrats need at least Republican senators to pass a motion to call witnesses.

Comments
How concerned was Collins about “fairness” during the house proceedings? You can’t piously claim you are all about fairness today when you didn’t care about it last month.
The RINO quislings FINALLY have a fig leaf to cover their attempts to Get Trump.
While I do appreciate the hilarious irony of the Democrats counting on JOHN BOLTON to save them after spending literally decades trying to destroy him, it’s truly pathetic on the part of the RINOs.
STOP PRETENDING THESE ASSHOLEA ARE ACTING IN GOOD FAITH.
They think they’re helping their re-election chances by being ‘fair’.
They’re just pissing off both sides. Democrats don’t ca4e about fairness they want to get rid of Trump, and unless they’re going to vote to get rid of him they don’t give a shit about anything else.
Republicans see this for the circus farce it is, if you vote to extend it they’re going to get rid of you.
Millions mourn the death of Kobe Bryant I hear from the opening prayer. OK. I know of the name but that is it. Apparently this is a big thing.
A very good basketball player. Winner of many championships.
Yes a great baskeball player – known to rape young women
OJ simpson a great running back – known to abuse women and killing his ex wife.
I came across an interview with Kobe about that. He claimed he sincerely thought the activity was consensual. He came to realize it wasn’t and gave her a mutually agreed upon settlement and apology. His wife filed for divorce. He turned his heart back to God and worked hard on making amends with his wife. She withdrew the petition for divorce. Mistakes were made, sinful mistakes. But he realized those mistakes and tried to reform himself. May God have mercy on his soul.
Except it wasnt an isolated incident
She withdrew the petition for divorce after he spent millions for jewelry for her …..
He did appear to turn it around but he was a staunch anti Trumper and sjw. People make mistakes. Pretty sure the young lady in Co made one, one has to wonder if it was about money. She was the one who came to him, his room. These extremely rich men have to watch out.
It was a horrible death of 9 people who should have never been up there. The police wouldn’t let their choppers fly because of the fog.
Someone may have pressured the pilot
His 13 year old daughter was in that chopper
Also supported the Trayvon Martin hoax, a champion philanderer, and other hero-status attributes.
Michael Jordan Lite. I am waiting for AOC to chastise his carbon footprint. They were taking a helicopter across town to his daughter’s basketball game/practice(?).
This lyric immediately came to mind.
Just a song before I go,
To whom it may concern
Traveling twice the speed of sound
It’s easy to get burned
It’s a terrible family tragedy. Prayers all around for the survivors, but I’ve never understood celeb worship, or fawning for the famous when they speak out, or pass away, etc. As if the guy working 2 jobs to put his kid through college isn’t as important or necessary.
I had never heard of him until yesterday, that is because I dislike jock culture. There are so many things far more important than jockism, our society’s focus on jocks says a great deal about our priorities.
In other words, I do not wish Kobe Bryant ill, but I also am not going to lose sleep.
Will this s..t show ever end? Why can’t McConnell control his caucus? I have never regretted a vote for a Republican before Romney!
I had such high hopes for Romney. It all came crashing down that one debate night when Romney demonstrated that he lacked a backbone. Romney is irredeemable in my eyes.
How many rinos are needed to have to call witnesses?
4 (I think)
My first reaction to your question was that you were about to tell a “changing the lightbulb” joke.
I like Ken Starr, but he’s human Ambien. Lose the sing-song tone, Ken.
Ken Starr… smh… Ken Starr’s recent book goes through the whole shabang in monotonous detail. IMO Starr was stymied and bested by the Clintons. Ken Starr is a Boy Scouts Boy Scout. Nothing bad can be said about Ken Starr. He is honest and honorable to FAULT! Starr is impassionate and at the same time driven. As a Native NewYorker I do not appreciate people without a natural killer instinct. In a prosecutor I expect this.
Who will join Romney, Collins, and Murkowski?
Yes and another from Colorado I believe
Collins is always on the wrong side. She and Creeper Romney are meant for each other.
I thought Bolton was a better man than he is turning out to be. That old content of character thing can be an unpleasant discovery.
“Who will join Romney, Collins, and Murkowski?”
******
John Roberts??? If the “witness” vote is 50-50, will Roberts vote to break the tie? or decline to vote.
“John Roberts??? If the “witness” vote is 50-50, will Roberts vote to break the tie? or decline to vote.”
I doubt that he would be able to vote. He is not the presiding officer like the VP who is entitled to vote in the event of a tie.
“I doubt that he would be able to vote.”
*******
“The Chief Justice has voted in the case of a tie in an
impeachment trial on two occasions. “……”where the Senate were
equally divided the ChiefJustice, presiding on the trial of the
President, gave a casting vote, it is hereby declared that, in the
judgment of the Senate, such vote was without authority under the
Constitution of the United States.” 82 This was rejected by a vote
of 21 yeas, 27 nays.83 Thus the Senate turned down each attempt to
prevent the Chief Justice from voting,….”

Actually they did approve one on this topic:
The Presiding Officer of the Senate shall direct all
necessary preparations in the Senate Chamber, and the
presiding officer on the trial shall direct all the
forms of proceedings while the Senate are sitting for
the purpose of trying an impeachment, and all forms
during the trial not otherwise specially provided for.
And the presiding officer on the trial may rule all
questions of evidence and incidental questions, which
ruling shall stand as the judgment of the Senate,
unless some member of the Senate shall ask that a
formal vote be taken thereon, in which case it shall be
submitted to the Senate for decision: or he may, at his
option, in the first instance submit any such question
to a vote of the members of the Senate.
Well I suppose we know on whose side that ole fair Roberts will fall.
Pierre Delecto and his grifting RINO girlfriend ‘said this morning they definitely want witnesses.’ And lots of those fruity drink AHOY paper umbrellas, too?
The house had their turn. It’s not up to the Senate to do the job the House should’ve done. The articles of impeachment are the evidence presented to Congress. So, stuff it, crap weasels.
Bolton = Christine Blakey Ford with a mustache.
Anchovy, That is not fair. Bolton is a hawk. There is a time and a place for Bolton. Thankfully with Trump this is not the time and place for war hawks like Bolton. Should the winds change Bolton and others of his impeccable character would serve the USA well. Bolton has served our nation with honor, and is deserving of our respect and gratitude.
Will McConnell stand up and say enough!? The senate is just supposed to vote, not bring on more witnesses!
Get ready for Kavanaugh Part II.
It’s awful. Starr was rambling on and on about something, trying to impress people I don’t care about or whatever. Is he TRYING to put everybody to sleep? Sekulow was hardly better, freakin’ Nanshi Peloshi’s goddamn PENS was the best he has. Really?
The seditious Dems are destroying our constitution and our country, this is a target rich environment, call Adam Schiff and Hunter Biden, but those clowns under oath! Trump needs to fire his entire defense team and FAST!
I have read a lot of people of disappointment with Trumps defense teams presentation.
As much as Gantez pissed me off with his vote supporting Nazinan against Trumps missiles , he would put on a show I think
Has anyone at NYT actually seen a quotation from Boton’s book? I’m unclear whether it’s ‘anonymous sources familiar with Bolton’s manuscript’ or whether the NYT actually has a copy of it?
Wife asked about it this morning, upset by the “bombshell” caption. I pointed to the statement, without quotes which say “demanded an investigation of the democrats, which includes the Bidens” or something like that. Where does what Trump said begin and end … likewise Bolton … likewise the NYT reporter …
My guess is the NYT added the “which includes the Bidens” … IF Trump had knowledge that some US aid money to Ukraine was being laundered in some way and funneled back to democrats, I WOULD EXPECT the president to ask for an investigation of it before giving more aid. The unacknowledged part of Democrats assertion is that Trump and apparently the rest of Gov’t oversight can’t question the very obvious (Hunter) money laundering / kickbacks?
So tired of the MSM and their “bombshells” – same old crap in a new wrapper.
I thought somebody would have hit this before now. According to what I’ve seen and heard, they don’t have a leaked excerpt of the book, they’re relying on another “anonymous source”. My money’s on Vindman’s bro, who’s named (iirc) Evgeny, who is apparently vetting the book for NSC. How, pray tell, did a couple of Ukraine-born security risks get that deep into the intelligence community?
Jane Raskin. Where did this one come from? I like what I am hearing.
Squashes like Collins and co just needed an excuse to side with their Demicrat colleagues and low and behold here comes the NYT just in time.
These squishes really do need to be dealt with once and for all. Their Republican party is dead. Its time for them to get on board or fuck off and fotmally become Democrats.
Pam Bondi… Fierce Prosecutor and armed concealed carry permit holder. Pam is a Great American.
She may be all of those things but she gave a lousy presentation. She had the best content to work with but stuttered and fumbled around constantly.
Did she even practice at all?
I am not seeing what you are seeing. Clue me in to your insight. I am thinking Bondi is rocking it. Give me the skinny.
Did you really find her to be articulate? I didn’t and I watched her whole presentation. I thought she fumbled and didn’t hit several key punchlines regarding the Biden crime family.
I thought she did great. Her argument destroyed the Bidens.
David7134 I saw the same. IMO Bondi rocked.
Pam kills it. This is what everybody needs to know.
Where are all these people coming from? Eric Hirshman? Who is that? Somebody give me a Playbill, I cannot keep track of the cast of characters.
Wow did you hear Obama’s head just explode?
Any reason you folks at LI linked to the WP feed for this?
Watching the coverage during the breaks is hilarious.
They dismiss the entire defense presentation and just want to talk about Bolton and his “shocking”, “bombshell” blah blah blah supposed revelations and more defense of the Biden crime syndicate of course…
Honestly I do not understand your perspective. Bondi comes across to me crystal clear and in plain speak. I am baffeled by your assessment. smh I do not know what else to say. Bondi means nothing to me, I am just calling balls and strikes and not for thothin’ what I am hearing from you comes from way out in left field. I am completely missing what you are saying,
I am a real history buff. However; enough is enough. Is it possible to bring a Class Action Suit against congress for inflicting this upon us? Shoot me now…
Ted Cruz pissed me off to no end with his NeverTrump crap but has come back to the GOP and is absolutely solid. Ted Cruz is absolved of any and all percieved sins. I would vote for Cruz2024.
IDIOTS ABSOLTE IDIOTS neither the Senate nor the house can eradicate the Executive Branch Privilage. I am now in a funk and ashamed of my govrnment. Make it stop. smh…
Talking about bills of attainder now. Fine. If they start on corruption of blood I’m out of here.
