After over a year, Harvard hires new ‘Associate Dean for Inclusion and Belonging’
After sixteen months, Harvard has finally filled its Associate Dean for Inclusion and Belonging position, a role that oversees numerous campus diversity initiatives within Harvard’s Dean of Students office.
The Harvard Crimson reports that Alta Mauro, currently the assistant dean of students at New York University, will fill the position that’s been vacant since September of 2018. The university formally began searching for a candidate to fill the role in February of last year.
Mauro “will direct the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion team within the Dean of Students Office. In that capacity, she will oversee the Office of BGLTQ Student Life, the Office of Diversity Education and Support, the College’s Title IX Office, and the Women’s Center,” The Crimson reports. She will also oversee the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations, an initiative founded in 1981 meant to foster racial and ethnic harmony on the school’s campus. The foundation merged with the school’s Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion last year.
On Harvard’s website, Dean of Students Katie O’Dair laid our Mauro’s responsibilities as the new associate dean:
[S]he will work with a community of experts to embed the principles of diversity, inclusion, and belonging in the co-curricular and residential experience of all Harvard College students. Further, she will provide strategy and vision for an office that both serves students of today and orients toward the future, ensuring that programs and services are responsive to the changing demographics and needs of the Harvard College student body.
