Ex-University of Portland employee pleads not guilty in baseball bat attack on college VPA former University of Portland employee who was angry about how the college handled his daughter’s sexual assault allegation has pleaded not guilty to a single assault charge in connection with the beating of a colleague.Patrick Ell, 52, was arraigned Tuesday afternoon on one count of second-degree assault, after he allegedly attacked Matthew Rygg on Dec. 13 near the intersection of Northeast Cleveland Avenue and Northeast Dekum Street. He was indicted Dec. 23. A court document issued on Tuesday showed that Ell has also been ordered not to have contact with any current University of Portland students.Court documents show Rygg came home that night and saw a man hanging out near his house. Rygg told police that the man didn’t talk to him but suddenly began hitting him.Rygg, court records say, recognized his assailant as Ell. He said Ell hit him several times, chased him down the street and hit him more when he tried to call the police. Police said they found Ell a few minutes later and arrested him. He was back in his home watching TV with his family.Rygg was treated at an area hospital for multiple wounds to his head.Ell was arrested in the 7300 block of North Chautauqua Boulevard at approximately 11 p.m. on the night of the attack…The probable cause affidavit states that Ell worked at UP, and that about three years ago, he told school administrators about his daughter, who was a student at the school, being sexually assaulted by another student. Employees told Ell they had already looked into the allegations and determined they did not warrant further investigation.
