U. Michigan Students Create Nation’s First Minor in Social Class and Inequality

“will explore the intersections of class with race, gender and other dimensions of social structure”

Colleges and universities already offer a ton of courses in this area, it’s inescapable. Was this really necessary?

MLive reports:

2 University of Michigan students help create nation’s first social class and inequality minor

Meaghan Wheat admits initial talks between herself and fellow University of Michigan student Lauren Schandevel about creating an entire department at the university were a bit ridiculous.

More than two-and-a-half years later, the duo will have to settle for a more modest, but no less significant accomplishment – the creation of the nation’s first higher education minor focused on social class and inequality.

The two UM College of Literature, Science and the Arts seniors were instrumental in creating the minor, which recently was passed through the LSA’s executive committee. It will be offered to students this fall, housed in UM’s Women’s Studies department.

The minor will explore the intersections of class with race, gender and other dimensions of social structure.

“In America, we tend not to talk about social class – we attribute wealth to personal merit and poverty to personal deficits,” Schandevel said. “But I grew up watching my parents – the hardest working people I know – struggle to make ends meet, so that narrative just didn’t add up for me. As a working-class student, learning about social class over the course of my college career has been paramount in shaping my identity and my understanding of the world.”

Identity politics, it’s always identity. If you identify yourself as a “working class student”, I guess “the Man” is always going to put you down. Not bad choices in majors or a continual outlook that blames others. She should be proud that those hard working parents got her to college and that she has the opportunity to make a great life for herself at a name brand university. Instead, this.

My father would have asked her where she plans to open a “social class” store.

“Was this really necessary?”

Absolutely. Classes are just classes. A minor can be added to your resume. It tells employers everywhere that this person is truly virtuous and “woke.”

IOW, this will get graduates into choice jobs where they can practice saying important, socially conscious things like, “Do you want fries with that?”

It was incredibly grating hearing the NFL talk about “social justice” causes and trying to conflate that with civil rights causes tonight during the Super Bowl.

Of course, the concept of “social justice” is nothing offensive in and of itself…rather, it’s the perversion and subversion of the term to mean what one group craving power wants it to mean (and colleges are the biggest cultivators of this subversive grievance industry). That’s the only reason the term has become so polarizing.

I can’t wait until we get our own caste system just like India!

Social justice = civil beheading.
