Trump makes the case for a border wall in address to the nation

Short, to the point, on the “growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OenMJ_eMw_E

President Trump just delivered his Address to the Nation on the need for a border wall.

It was short, under 10 minutes.

A short, to the point speech was not what #TheResistance was expecting.

Trump didn’t declare a National Emergency, so the hysteria was unfounded. Trump came across as reasonable and concerned. He recited a litany of horrors caused by illegal crossings.

The Schumer/Pelosi response was what you would expect.

This visual is now a meme. Bad visuals for Chuckie and Nancy.

ADDED – Here’s the full text of Trump’s speech:

My fellow Americans,

Tonight, I am speaking to you because there is a growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border.

Every day customs and border patrol agents encounter thousands of illegal immigrants trying to enter our country. We are out of space to hold them and we have no way to promptly return them back home to their country. America proudly welcomes millions of lawful immigrants who enrich our society and contribute to our nation. But, all Americans are hurt by uncontrolled illegal migration. It strains public resources and drives down jobs and wages. Among those hardest hit are African-Americans and Hispanic Americans. Our southern border is a pipeline for vast quantities of illegal drugs, including meth, heroin, cocaine and fentanyl. Every week 300 of our citizens are killed by heroin alone, 90 percent of which floods across from our southern border. More Americans will die from drugs this year than were killed in the entire Vietnam War.

In the last two years, ICE officers made 266,000 arrests of aliens with criminal records including those charged or convicted of 100,000 assaults, 30,000 sex crimes, and 4,000 violent killings. Over the years thousands of Americans have been brutally killed by those who illegally entered our country and thousands more lives will be lost if we don’t act right now. This is a humanitarian crisis, a crisis of the heart and a crisis of the soul.

Last month, 20,000 migrant children were illegally brought into the united States, a dramatic increase. These children are used as human pawns by vicious coyotes and ruthless gangs. One in three women are sexually assaulted on the dangerous trek up through Mexico. Women and children are the biggest victims by far of our broken system. This is the tragic reality of illegal immigration on our southern border. This is the cycle of human suffering that I am determined to end.

My administration has presented Congress with a detailed proposal to secure the border and stop the criminal gangs, drug smugglers and human traffickers. It’s a tremendous problem. Our proposal was developed by law enforcement professionals and border agents at the department of homeland security. These are the resources they have requested to properly perform their mission and keep America safe. In fact, safer than ever before. The proposal from Homeland Security includes cutting-edge technology for detecting drugs, weapons, illegal contraband and many other things. We have requested more agents, immigration judges, and bed space to process the sharp rise in unlawful migration fueled by our very strong economy.

Our plan also contains an urgent request for humanitarian assistance and medical support. Furthermore, we have asked Congress to close border security loopholes so that illegal immigrant children can be safely and humanely returned back home. Finally, as part of an overall approach to border security, law enforcement professionals have requested $5.7 billion for a physical barrier. At the request of Democrats, it will be a steel barrier rather than a concrete wall.

This barrier is absolutely critical to border security. It’s also what our professionals at the border want and need. This is just common sense. The border wall would very quickly pay for itself. The cost of illegal drugs exceeds $500 billion a year. Vastly more than the $5.7 billion we have requested from Congress. The wall will always be paid for indirectly by the great new trade deal we have made with Mexico.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, who you will be hearing from later tonight, has repeatedly supported a physical barrier in the past along with many other Democrats. They changed their mind only after I was elected president. Democrats in Congress have refused to acknowledge the crisis. And they have refused to provide our brave border agents with the tools they desperately need to protect our families and our nation. The federal government remains shut down for one reason and one reason only because Democrats will not fund border security.

My administration is doing everything in our power to help those impacted by the situation. But the only solution is for Democrats to pass a spending bill that defends our borders and reopens the government. This situation could be solved in a 45-minute meeting. I have invited congressional leadership to the White House tomorrow to get this done. Hopefully, we can rise above partisan politics in order to support national security.

Some have suggested a barrier is immoral. Then why do wealthy politicians build walls, fences and gates around their homes? They don’t build walls because they hate the people on the outside, but because they love the people on the inside. The only thing that is immoral is for the politicians to do nothing and continue to allow more innocent people to be so horribly victimized. America’s heart broke the day after Christmas when a young police officer in California was savagely murdered in cold blood by an illegal alien who just came across the border. The life of an American hero was stolen by someone who had no right to be in our country.

Day after day, precious lives are cut short by those who have violated our borders. In California, an Air Force veteran was raped, murdered and beaten to death with a hammer by an illegal alien with a long criminal history. In Georgia, an illegal alien was recently charged with murder for killing, beheading and dismembering his neighbor. In Maryland, MS-13 gang members who arrived in the United States as unaccompanied minors were arrested and charged last year after viciously stabbing and beating a 16-year-old girl. Over the last several years, I have met with dozens of families whose loved ones were stolen by illegal immigration. I’ve held the hands of the weeping mothers and embraced the grief-stricken fathers. So sad. So terrible. I will never forget the pain in their eyes, the tremble in their voices and the sadness gripping their souls. How much more American blood must we shed before Congress does its job?

For those who refuse to compromise in the name of in the name of border security, I would ask, imagine if it was your child, your husband or your wife whose life was so cruelly shattered and totally broken. To every member of Congress, pass a bill that ends this crisis. To every citizen, call Congress and tell them to finally, after all of these decades, secure our border. This is a choice between right and wrong, justice and injustice. This is about whether we fulfill our sacred duty to the American citizens we serve. When I took the oath of office, I swore to protect our country. And that is what I will always do so help me God. Thank you and good night.

We need a national version of California’s old Proposition 187. Streamline it’s path straight to SCOTUS since it will be challenged by every leftist federal judge and circuit court. Removing any and all incentives to illegally immigrate is just as important as building a wall.

It is time to ignore two-bit federal district judges, and tell them he is ignoring them.

stc in reply to CKYoung. | January 9, 2019 at 4:54 am

    And mandatory E-verify

Edward in reply to stc. | January 9, 2019 at 8:43 am

Indeed! We need a much improved and accurate e-Verify system which is mandatory with stringent* penalties which significantly increase with additional instances. And the penalties should not exempt employers of single Illegals (e.g. nannies, maids, gardeners, etc.).

      * I’m of a mind that the first offense should be a fine of $2,000.00 per each Illegal Alien found working. Any further offense (different day than the first) should include felony level penalty (e.g. $10,000.00 and Five years incarceration) plus $2,000.00 per Illegal found working.

Disincentives, offered one or more bullets at a time. How about automatic gun turrets?

Asset seizure. They are here illegally, forfeiture seems reasonable, and using such to pay for their removable would be poetic.

So many great lines.

– “More Americans will die from drugs this year than were killed in the entire Vietnam War.”

“This is the cycle of human suffering that I am determined to end.”

And, my personal favorite: “We don’t lock our doors at night because we hate the people outside. We lock them because we love the people inside.”

SanFranNan and Chuck, acting like a tag team for Action News Live, are now spewing their lies.

CKYoung in reply to pfg. | January 8, 2019 at 9:24 pm

That was a pathetic response by chuck and nancy. For the love of all that is holy we are talking about stopping ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. Until they can differentiate between LEGAL and ILLEGAL immigration they will lose on this issue.

CaliforniaJimbo in reply to CKYoung. | January 9, 2019 at 7:54 am

Its pretty clear that Chuck and Nancy wrote their “response” well before what VSGPDJT said actually hit the airwaves. Thats what makes it so bad on their part. Like they were not even listening to the same speech. And they say Washington is Tone Deaf…

Short and to the point.

Chuck and Nancy got outmaneuvered once again. You’d think they’d get tired of looking like morons, just once.

Schumer and Pelosi:Lurch and Morticia.

Is it safe to say Chuck and Nancy did not have an advance copy of Trump’s comments?

Connivin Caniff | January 8, 2019 at 9:30 pm

Terrible speech. Should have said 22-30 million illegals here already – is that enough? Should have set out the specific cost thereof in all the v various ways. Should have said that Democrats in the past voted for hundreds of miles of wall. Should have referred to former Democrats, white, black and Hispanic, eg. Barbara Jordan,Cesar Chavez. Should have said how effective walls can be – eg. San Diego. He had bad speech writers and should have realized it.

JusticeDelivered in reply to Connivin Caniff. | January 8, 2019 at 10:33 pm

I thought the speech was pretty good, but he should have mentioned the MIT-Yale, how the claim of 11 million for decades is wrong and a sham study and their conclusion that there are 22 to 30 million illegals here. He should also have mentioned that illegals currently here will add at least 100 million anchor babies to our population.

Since these things were not mentioned it is up to us to flood forums with that information.

Connivin Caniff in reply to JusticeDelivered. | January 8, 2019 at 11:45 pm

Very true, and for him to say all the things I suggested and you are suggesting would only take a few minutes. The problem is, who should he have aimed the speech at? Not at you and me, but at the people who are never allowed to know these facts, especially minorities and suburban women; had they heard all this, I think they would have been astonished and won over to him completely. That is why I am negative about the speech, it could have been so much more to so many more people who should really know the extent of the problem, and the horribleness of the Democratic obstruction. What could have been.

healthguyfsu in reply to JusticeDelivered. | January 9, 2019 at 11:05 am

I love that MIT and Yale did the study, but mentioning it is like saying water is wet. (although maybe that’s what we need nowadays).

I am a proponent of data and science being a scientist myself, but it doesn’t take a dataphile like me to recognize that census data are going to grossly underestimate a population that doesn’t want to be found.

All great points. But remember: He started the speech this evening, but had to get it finished before midnight.

Looking at the democrat responses, on CNN, it begs the question: why are leftist women leaders so damn ugly? (Not the hollywood idiots who mindlessly repeat them.) Is their bad luck at birth the reason they spew such bitter hate and try to destroy our way of life for the rest of us? Is it their rejection over the years?

Man, think of people in wheelchairs who are such great patriots, and compare.

You need to go to DC and apply for a position as speech writer. right away, don’t let a day get away!

Connivin Caniff in reply to Edward. | January 9, 2019 at 1:25 pm

No incursions into the Swamp, until I am sure there is an effective vaccine. By the way, the most important reason for a wall, or other physical barrier, is that it keeps the miscreant from getting in at all. Electronics, drones and all that other non-physical stuff don’t stop the invader from making that first step into the Magic Kingdom. That is all he or she has to do for the panoply of rights, privileges, free food etc. to start showering down on them. The most important value of walls and other physical barriers is thus that the bum can’t take that one step.

The President just teed up the Democrats for the big fall. They have been pained into a corner with no way out.

Don’t forget that Pelosi sees herself as a master legislator. She also presided over the loss of 1200 legislative seats nationwide. She had help from Reed and Obama, but her legacy is not built on accomplishments.

Pelosi and Schumer came off as inauthentic, and their animus was on display. They do not care about the people they claim to love, but only about disparagement of Trump and, by extension, those who have other views.

We can start calling Chuck a “denier” as he really thinks walls don’t work

JusticeDelivered in reply to MarkS. | January 8, 2019 at 10:38 pm

Walls are a good start, but we will also need drone swarms with both surveillance and anti personnel versions to immediately terminate those trying to sneak into America. The only way to stop this invasion is to start sending them back in body bags.

How about… if caught trying to get in to country illegally… 5 years in prison… not a US prison but the ones in their country. Requires negotiation on costs but just enough to cover their normal cost.

All we really need, and have ever needed, is to end the free goodies. We never had a real border problem until they started giving the illegals lots of money, food and medical care to stay here. Before that they’d come up, work the fields, and then go back home until the next season. I don’t have a problem with the wall, but it would have been a lot cheaper to just enforce the laws.

        Edward in reply to txvet2. | January 9, 2019 at 8:57 am

One of the biggest opponents of Illegal Aliens in the US was Cesar Chavez. He knew they undercut the wages and took the jobs of the unskilled here legally. He constantly worked to get the government to stop illegals entering the country. He didn’t get anywhere, sad to say.

        JusticeDelivered in reply to txvet2. | January 9, 2019 at 10:40 am

We need to put a stop to the anchor baby scam.

Exactly! Until we have shot bodies of INVADERS decaying and stinking in the sun … for all the world to see … the INVADERS will continue to come because our system is a joke, deportation is a joke … and if we don’t address this now, this country will become a certifiable joke.

Wow. This evening was a complete DISASTER for the Democrats.

From Schumer and Pelosi’s utterly cringe-inducing performance, to Democrats ‘fact-checking’ Trump by claiming his numbers were ‘right but misleading’, to the Washington Post actually fact checking his ‘1 in 3 women will be raped’ by saying the ACTUAL NUMBER is between 60-80%.

These people are insane. They would have been better off having their rebuttal be Ocasio-Cortez dancing for 10 minutes.

This is as close to Reagan as I’ve seen since Reagan. Well done.

I was gonna ask about a transcript of Morticia and Lurch…

…then I realized I didn’t care what they said.

The only thing that would have been honest is if those two malignant swine came out and admitted they need to enlarge their dependent and criminal underclasses – or if pelosi came out and trashed Jews and Christians like her new Muslim congresswomen.

Early on,.German Jews thought hitler was a joke. We dont hear any of them laughing.

“…the most presidential he has ever delivered in his life …”

Except for his inauguration speech, and every one of his foreign policy speeches. I suppose this was the first time CPL tuned in.

CaliforniaJimbo in reply to Valerie. | January 9, 2019 at 7:56 am

Was CPL with Stormy while she was ironing her laundry in her underwear? Enquiring minds want to know 🙂

President Trump is correct about the border problem and what I see as phase one of the solution. It’s time for republicans in both the house and senate to get off the sidelines and actively support his effort to protect our southern border.

I didn’t watch the speech (past my bedtime), so thanks for posting the transcript, Professor. I thought the speech was excellent and to the point. I especially liked how Trump framed this as a moral question; That was a brilliant move which will cut the dems off at the knees. I love this President!

Anyone want to place gets on the fake news that will be broadcast to distract people from last night’s address?? You know…kinda like the day after the first union address??

Bucky Barkingham | January 9, 2019 at 10:46 am

Chuckie and Miss Nancy more concerned about gummint civil servants than they are about the safety of Americans.

An inflection point, the GOP will continue to just posture and do nothing about immigration. They think that they have a captive audience, they’re wrong. Tired of watching the Howard Beale Show.

ugottabekiddinme | January 9, 2019 at 11:37 am

How about Chuck and Nancy’s absurd suggestion that a solution is easy — just end the shutdown and then they’ll discuss the border?

Like, sure, Trump the negotiator is about to fall for that gambit and throw away the greatest leverage he has in this showdown –> federal employee union pain.

It is to laugh.

Apparently the speech was so effective that the GOP RINOs are beginning to seize the anti-Trump leadership from the Dems.

Same old GOP. “Refuse to win!”

“It’s never EVER the right time to do the right thing!”
