Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi invited President Donald Trump to deliver his State of the Union on February 5 from the House floor.

Trump quickly accepted the invitation:

On January 23, Pelosi and Trump exchanged contentious letters about the SOTU, which was scheduled for January 29. Trump told Pelosi that he planned to honor her original invitation to deliver the speech on that date in the House chamber.

Pelosi snapped that he will not have the ability to deliver the SOTU on the House floor during the shutdown.

After hours of media speculating Trump’s next move, he tweeted at 11:12PM ET on January 23 that he decided not to hold the SOTU during the shutdown.
