Gavin Newsom, former mayor of disease-ridden San Francisco and Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown’s Lieutenant Governor, began his reign governorship in true progressive style.
For starters, 2 journalists covering the inauguration were ejected. Though one was disruptive, the second was not, but was associated with citizen groups battling the state’s sanctuary policies.
Kevin Kurson, covering the event for the California Globe, filed this report:
[T]wo of the security guards – the woman and one of the men – came back to eject another credentialed journalist, apparently simply because he appeared to know [Benjamin Bergquam, the disruptive reporter]. (Both were wearing the logos of Frontline America, a Trump-supporting website.)The second fellow hadn’t said a single word or disrupted the proceedings in any way. He was just sitting there with his iPhone stabilizer and headset. His ejection appeared to be entirely based on some kind of association with the first fellow.That’s not a good look for the capital press people.Another interesting element is that not a single one of the 20 or so reporters in the immediate area spoke up in defense of the second ejectee. Myself included. Speaking only for myself, the reason I failed to speak up is that I was so startled by the turn of events. When you cover enough of these things you’re used to seeing ordinary protesters stand up and sometimes get ejected but never journalists.
Once ensconced in office, Newsom proposed several #Resistance-based policies, including covering the healthcare costs of young illegal immigrants.
Gov. Gavin Newsom announced sweeping proposals to tackle the state’s healthcare needs shortly after taking office on Monday, outlining a dramatic Medi-Cal expansion that would cover young immigrant adults who are in the U.S. illegally, require that all consumers in the state carry health insurance and increase subsidies for middle-class families to help those who need it.The Day 1 announcement was as much a rebuke to the Trump administration as it was an attempt by Newsom to make good on his campaign promise to fix a fragmented healthcare system that leaves many priced out or underinsured….California would be the first state to cover immigrants without legal status who are younger than 26 through Medi-Cal, the state’s health program for people with low incomes. California already covers undocumented children until they turn 19, with Newsom’s plan increasing the age cut-off to mirror that of the Affordable Care Act, which allows young adults to stay on a parent’s health insurance plan until turning 26.
You know who else is a dashing, young politician who thumbed his nose at President Donald Trump? Emmanuel Macron. And, now, like the French president, Newsom is inspiring “Yellow Vest” activism already.
However, instead of climate change, border security is the inspiration behind this look.
Given that Governor Newsom promised to remove the California National Guard from the border, and that he seems more interested in helping illegal immigrants than California tax-payers, I suspect we will be seeing “Yellow Vests” rallies before his first year in office concludes.
And President Trump’s address Tuesday, which inspired this commentary, should be epic.
