The brand new 116th Congress convened today with the Democrats in control of the House of Representatives.
Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) will waste no time as he plans to introduce articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump.
Sherman introduced these articles back in 2017, but he may find more support since the Democrats control the House. From The Los Angeles Times:
Sherman’s articles of impeachment accuse Trump of obstructing justice by firing former FBI Director James B. Comey, among other wrongdoing.“There is no reason it shouldn’t be before the Congress,” Sherman said. “Every day, Donald Trump shows that leaving the White House would be good for our country.”
Sherman wrote in his resolution from 2017:
In his conduct while President of the United States, Donald John Trump, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has prevented, obstructed and impeded the administration of justice during a federal investigation in that:Knowing that federal law enforcement authorities were investigating possible criminal law violations of his former National Security Advisor, General Michael Flynn and knowing that federal law enforcement authorities were conducting one or more investigations into Russian state interference in the 2016 campaign for President of the United States, and that such investigation(s) included conduct of his campaign personnel and associates acting on behalf of the campaign, to include the possible collusion by those individuals with the Russian government, Donald John Trump sought to use his authority to hinder and cause the termination of such investigation(s) including through threatening, and then terminating, James Comey, who was until such termination the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Sherman listed Trump’s “pattern of behavior” that led him to these conclusions, which included Trump’s request that the FBI “curtail the investigation of activities” done by Flynn, firing Comey, etc.
Sherman concluded that Trump “acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to manifest injury of the people of the United States.”
Holy Hyperbole, Batman.
We do not know if Sherman will find any success because incoming Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has tried to downplay any talk of impeachment until “the outcome of the special counsel investigation.”
Pelosi told the Today Show that “We shouldn’t be impeaching for a political reason, and we shouldn’t avoid impeachment for a political reason.”
After the Democrats came out victorious in November, incoming House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler took a different stance from Pelosi in an interview with Roll Call:
“If you’re serious about removing a president from office, what you’re really doing is overturning the result of the last election,” Nadler said. “You don’t want to have a situation where you tear this country apart and for the next 30 years half the country’s saying ‘We won the election, you stole it.’”“I’m talking about the voters, people who voted for Trump,” he said. “Do you think that the case is so stark, that the offenses are so terrible and the proof so clear, that once you’ve laid it all out you will have convinced an appreciable fraction of the people who voted for Trump, who like him, that you had no choice? That you had to do it?”
