Earlier this morning, Axios has reported that “Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has verbally resigned to Chief of Staff John Kelly in anticipation of being fired by President Trump, according to a source with direct knowledge.”
Other reports indicate that Rosenstein is headed to the White House and “expecting to be fired” and he will not resign.
Now it has emerged that Rosenstein will meet with President Donald Trump on Thursday.
Last week, The New York Times wrote using anonymous resources that Rosenstein offered to wear a wire to tape Trump and try to rally Cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment.

“At the request of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, he and President Trump had an extended conversation to discuss the recent news stories,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement Monday.“Because the President is at the United Nations General Assembly and has a full schedule with leaders from around the world, they will meet on Thursday when the President returns to Washington, D.C.”
Axios must have gotten its information from a meeting that happened on Sunday when Rosenstein met with Kelly. Sources told USA Today that he discussed possibly resigning with the chief of staff. The same source said that Rosenstein went to the White House today to speak with Kelly again and “had expected to be fired, but it does not appear that his status has changed.”

Trump spoke this morning to Geraldo Rivera on his “Geraldo in Cleveland” radio show that airs on WTAM and mentioned Rosenstein. From The New York Times:
Advisers have sought to keep Mr. Trump from firing Mr. Rosenstein, at least until after the midterm elections in November, for fear of a backlash. Since Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from overseeing the Russia investigation, Mr. Rosenstein supervises the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III.“I don’t want to comment on it until I get all the facts,” Mr. Trump said when asked if he would fire Mr. Rosenstein. “I haven’t gotten all the facts, but certainly it’s being looked at in terms of what took place. If anything took place and I’ll make a determination sometime later, but I don’t have the facts.”
