Socialist Students at U. Texas San Antonio Try to Cancel Jordan Peterson Event

“one of the most vocal and divisive anti-LGBTQ individuals in North America”

University of Toronto psychology professor Jordan Peterson has become a new favorite target of the left on American college campuses. Peterson defies the progressive narrative on gender, and other issues. For this, he is declared anti-LGBT.

Peterson is slated to give a lecture at the University of Texas at San Antonio, but a socialist student group is trying to get the event cancelled.

Peyton Dillberg reports at Campus Reform:

Socialist students seek to shut down Jordan Peterson event

A socialist student group at the University of Texas at San Antonio is promoting a petition demanding the cancellation of an upcoming lecture featuring Dr. Jordan Peterson.

The petition, which was started by a group called People Over Politics, contends that Peterson “makes a living promoting conversion therapy and spreading lies about transgender people,” calling him “one of the most vocal and divisive anti-LGBTQ individuals in North America.”

The Young Democratic Socialists of America (YDSA) chapter at UTSA shared the petition on Twitter, urging classmates to join the effort to prevent Peterson from delivering his scheduled lecture at the Tobin Center for Performing Arts on October 10 as part of his “12 Rules for Life Tour.”

Not only does the petition demand that the Tobin Center, a municipal auditorium, cancel the event, it also calls for the Center to “commit to scheduling programming that does not discriminate against people on the basis of an individual’s race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, disability, familial status, national origin, or age.”

Here is the text of the student petition at Change.org:

No Anti-LGBTQ+ Events at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts

San Antonio unveils a rainbow crosswalk and celebrates Pride this weekend, yet our city has invited one of the most vocal and divisive anti-LGBTQ individuals in North America to speak at the Tobin Center. Jordan Peterson makes a living promoting conversion therapy and spreading lies about transgender people. Considering the damage that San Antonio and our trans community would suffer if state lawmakers pass a bathroom bill next Spring, why in the world would we give this man a stage in our most celebrated performance hall?

Tell the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts to:

  • Cancel their event featuring Dr. Jordan Peterson on October 10, 2018;
  • And, commit to scheduling programming that does not discriminate against people on the basis of an individual’s race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, disability, familial status, national origin or age.

The San Antonio Current has picked up the story. Sanford Nowlin writes:

San Antonio Activist’s Petition Asks the Tobin Center to Cancel Jordan Peterson Lecture

A new change.org petition is asking the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts to cancel the Oct. 10 speaking appearance of Jordan B. Peterson, the conservative pop psychologist known for inflammatory statements about LGBT people and… well, just about everyone else other than straight white men.

Peterson, a best-selling author with a popular YouTube channel, found fame when, as a psychology prof at the University of Toronto, he lashed out at a Canadian bill he claimed would compel him to refer to transgender students by their preferred pronouns.

He’s emerged as a right-wing media darling by presenting himself as a science-savvy intellectual who can pick apart key tenets of social-justice movements —that patriarchy exists, for example, or that institutional bigotry is real.

The Huffington Post recently wrote a glowing piece about a 10 year old drag queen. Peterson commented on the story on Twitter:

This is an example of why the left has declared him a public enemy.

At a lefty site I read the complaint that the USSC was handing down more 1A cases favoring the right. Of course the Court isn’t handing out rulings favoring the right; it’s simply giving life to the 1A. Completely lost of the author, and naturally most of the comments, is that no one on the right is trying to shut down lefty-speak, and therefore there is no case or controversy touching on lefty-speak. These 1A cases reach the USSC only because state actors, in the form of public schools principally, are stifling non-leftist free speech, explaining why those are the cases reaching the courts. Ya really do have to draw a map for these people.

It isn’t favoring the right: it is allowing free speech and people’s natural instincts are doing the rest.

The socialists are just taking their cue from that legal genius Kagan, who complained that the Supreme Court was now “weaponizing” the First Amendment.

What the heck does that even mean? Now I’d be open to the argument that the 2nd Amendment “weaponizes” the first, and that’s as it should be.

The first two amendments are actually quite similar. Both are intended to persuade, the First with words, the Second with force or the threat of force. “Leave me alone” is a statement government needs to hear from citizens now and then, and right now the words are sometimes not necessary because the threat of force is always there, coiled in the background and ready to strike. There’s a reason for a rattlesnake on the Gadsden flag!

It’s no different than their constant bullshit with claiming women are under-represented in certain fields (while completely ignoring their OVER-representation in other fields. Of course ignoring the fact that those same fields of study in college have correlating lower rates of female enrollment. Nope – SEXISM!!!!

In this case of COURSE more cases favoring the right are coming down. The left is trying to shut down speech and the right is not. It makes perfect logical sense that more cases favoring the right are being decided.

Socialists/leftists have labels and foggy concepts but they never have arguments or logic. They fear ideas and open discussion because they know they would be unarmed.

When I was young, I listened to the KKK and it was enlightening to hear how irrational they were from their very own mouths. It was a way to learn how wrong and evil they were. But, I also learned you had to be a Democrat to be a member. If these socialists knew they were on solid ground, they would welcome the open discussion and exchange of ideas. They would encourage Peterson to tell us what he thinks so we would learn how “wrong” he is. Let’s see what UTSA does.

I once spoke with Gus Hall on a call-in radio talk show. Afterwards, I was singularly impressed with the feeling that I had just spoken to the most ignorant person with whom I had ever conversed.

He is dangerous to their fragile marginal construct of reality. “I would challenge you to a duel of wits, but I see you are unarmed.”

I’m embarrassed every time these flakes show up on a Texas campus, but then they’re everywhere and the media always pretends that they’re speaking for the majority when in fact it’s usually a just a relative handful of malcontents.

If Peterson is promoting “conversion therapy” that would be a problem, since it’s a dangerous fraud. It is neither safe nor effective, and it’s unethical for anyone to promote it. But this is the first time I’ve ever heard it alleged that he does so, let alone that he makes a living from it!

(PS, to head off a fruitless side-debate: I have no doubt that people’s sexual orientation does occasionally change spontaneously, in both directions, and therefore it stands to reason that one day some method will be discovered for triggering such a change. But Socarides’s method is not it. It has been tried for more than four decades and found not only useless but positively harmful. I know people who’ve suffered from it, and they’re relatively lucky compared to those who were seriously messed up by it.)

Peterson has never promoted conversion therapy; but he outraged the radical left in a Canadian Senate hearing a while back (it can be found on youtube) when during a discussion on proposed Gender Laws and regulations, he made the point that “Suppose the hard left’s view is correct, that Gender is fluid and easily changeable, depending on someones preference. Wouldn’t that mean that Conversion Therapy is in fact completely effective? Since all you need to do to change someone’s gender is to change their mind?”

The left freaked out and said “GAAH!! HE SUPPORTS CONVERSION THERAPY”!!! when in fact what Peterson did was to point out that it was their IDEAS which were completely contradictory and self defeating.

Milhouse in reply to Tom Servo. | July 3, 2018 at 12:42 pm

ah, that explains it. and of course his logic is irrefutable, which is why it freaks them out so much.

Paul in reply to Tom Servo. | July 3, 2018 at 5:20 pm

It leaves me scratching my head that the same leftists who go apoplectic over the idea of conversion therapy think hormone therapy and surgical mutilation are perfectly acceptable options.

Milhouse in reply to Paul. | July 4, 2018 at 3:27 am

Those things usually achieve their purpose with no harm, and produce a functioning and happy person. “Conversion therapy” does not work and invariably harms the subject.

ConradCA in reply to Milhouse. | July 4, 2018 at 9:00 am

Trans people are obviously mentally ill because they refuse to accept the reality that their sex is determined by their chromosomes. These mentally ill people have doctors create a disguise with surgery so they can pretend to be something their not.

Milhouse in reply to Milhouse. | July 4, 2018 at 2:53 pm

And it usually works. They go on to lead productive happy lives in their new bodies and personas. That’s the definition of successful medical intervention. “Conversion therapy” not only doesn’t do what it promises, it makes things much worse. I’d never heard Peterson accused of being involved in it, and I’m glad to hear the accusation is false.

    txvet2 in reply to Milhouse. | July 3, 2018 at 1:38 pm

Whether he “supports” conversion therapy or not isn’t the point. The point, as you must know, is whether a noisy group of malcontents can exercise veto authority over other people’s right to speak at A MUNICIPAL, NOT a school, facility.

Having listened to many hours of Peterson’s videos, I find it cringe-worthy that anyone would suggest that he’s anti LGBT. He views everything through a clinician’s eyes, and judges them from a perspective of how harmful they are to one’s self and to others. You can see him struggle quite often to soften the emotional impact of what he is about to say. He doesn’t seem to want to hurt anyone that isn’t actively being a dick.

That isn’t to say that he doesn’t understand why society has almost always been anti-homosexual. You can’t understand the human mind without first understanding what motivates us to do what we do, both individually and collectively. Explaining the judgement of others is not the same thing as adopting it as your own.

He sometimes explains the thought processes of history’s most-vicious mass murderers such as Stalin and Hitler to try to help his students understand how people get that way, because sure as shootin’, they will meet people on that path who will probably lack the talent and circumstances to succeed, and as clinicians, they will need to understand the malady before they can treat it. It is also important to understand what convinces people to follow sociopaths like Stalin and Hitler.

He likes to tell his class that they think that if they were in Germany during Hitler’s rise, they think they would have been one of the few people who risked their lives to oppose him, but he reminds them that it most likely isn’t so, then tries to help them understand why that is. Sorry for the non-topical anecdote, but it’s fascinating.

The bottom line is that a psychoanalyst has to understand aberrant thought to diagnose and treat it. That makes it easy for people to take something they say, strip the context, and then demonize them for it.

It’s unfair. Prof. Peterson constantly engages in a battle of wits with opponents who have only half the qualifications. (snerk)

If Jordan Peterson is anti-gay, can these liars and degenerates explain why he went on a international book tour with his now-friend Dave Rubin, who is gay and married?

As an immigrant whose family members were imprisoned and executed by socialist ideologues, I’m astonished by the absolute depravity of those who are born and grew up in America but yet are so shameless and cavalier in their embrace of socialism.

To hell with all of them.

This pretty much guarantees Peterson’s event will be a standing-room-only success.

UTSA has gone straight to hell since I worked there in ’90-’93.
