The scholarship is intended to attract more foreign students.

The College Fix reports:

Temple U. to offer ‘#YouAreWelcomeHere’ scholarship — because Trump

Beginning in the fall of 2019, Temple University will begin the so-called #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship which, it is hoped, will increase the number of foreign students at the school.

The scholarship was started in 2016 by Jessica Sandberg, Temple’s director of International Admissions, for which she was honored by The Chronicle of Higher Education as one of 2017’s people “who made a difference.”

According to The Temple News, last year saw a 40-percent decline in international admissions at US colleges as (and note the wording here) “educators […] said the election of Donald Trump and racism are some of their biggest concerns.”

The #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship will be available to any first-year international student “who submits an essay or video describing how they will help further cross-cultural education.”

From the story:

#YouAreWelcomeHere garnered attention after President Donald Trump’s January 2017 executive order temporarily and indefinitely barred citizens from [seven] Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S.

“I wanted to forward this idea that we should push back,” Sandberg said about the campaign. “I thought it was the right message at the right time, at a time when a lot of negative things were coming out about the US, to target young people and reinforce the idea of a safe place.” …

They are worried about cash cows not foreigners. A decline in enrollment doesn’t care if the dollars came from the US or elsewhere…however, the US should not be subsidizing foreign tuition with tax dollars (and yes, even “out of state/out of country” rates are subsidized at state schools…for the average university, tuition is only ~20% of the operating expenses).

More fake news even from the lefties of academia:

“Among institutions that responded to the survey, 68 percent cited the visa application process or visa denials and delays as a reason for declining new enrollments, up 35 percentage points from last year, and 57 percent cited the social and political environment in the U.S., up 41 percentage points from last year. Other factors cited included the cost of tuition and fees (57 percent of respondents also cited this) and competition from universities in other countries (54 percent).”

So, political environment is as much a cited factor by polled institutions as cost and competition, yet the prog cult would have you think it is all about Trump. The high level for visa issues is also indicative of a euro-centric recruitment contingent since their unis compete well with ours and immigration is so simple within the EU.

A bit of a nutshell of the left’s typical journey. Find a respected institution, raid and destroy it, suddenly realize they killed the goose that laid the golden egg, import increasingly less qualified patrons paying with cash. Rinse and repeat the last step until a government bailout can be obtained.

Good opportunity for ICE to show up for freshman orientation.
