Maine state senator Eric Brakey won Maine’s GOP Senate primary Tuesday night.
A video of Brakey dancing around in a Speedo made its way around the internet. It appeared on the website, www.ericbrakeyforsenate.com. That site is not his official campaign site, but one created by people who support Brakey’s opponent, Angus King.
Before entering politics, Brakey worked as an actor and did a spot seven years ago for a commercial. That spot was edited to create the video posted to the imposter site, making it appear as though Brakey filmed a video of himself dancing around his room in a speedo for an uncomfortable length of time.
After two days of snide remarks and misreporting the Brakey campaign had enough. Thursday, his campaign sent an email to set the record straight.
This reporting is grossly inaccurate. The Facts:
- The original spot was from a professional commercial shot for Vita Coco Coconut Water before Senator Eric Brakey was elected to office and working as a professional actor.
- The commercial was filmed seven years ago.
- The video was brought up as issue in Sen. Eric Brakey’s first race for Maine State Senate, but voters cared more about the real issues facing Maine — electing Eric Brakey over a 36-year incumbent politician in a 20 point landslide.
- The current video being circulated is NOT the original video, nor was it produced by Sen. Brakey’s campaign.
- The current version was made by internet trolls, and has been edited, altered, and put to new music to make it as unflattering as possible.
- The video was posted to a troll site, www.ericbrakeyforsenate.com, that is an run by supporters of Angus King

“I’m a real human being, not a career politician, and I worked professionally in theatre and film for years before I ever imagined running for office,” said Sen. Brakey. “This campaign is about fighting for Maine and against special interests in Washington DC, and I won’t let false and distorted attacks and internet trolls distract from that.”
