Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein turned himself in this morning to the New York police. They arrested him on charges of first- and third-degree rape and first-degree sex act.
From The Associated Press:
A law enforcement official says Harvey Weinstein will face criminal sex act and rape charges in a New York court. The official says the film producer will be charged with committing a criminal sex act in a 2004 encounter with an aspiring actress who told a magazine he forced her to perform oral sex.The official says the rape charge relates to a woman who has not spoken publicly or been identified.
The Washington Post wrote that “multiple reports” suggest that the charges “relate to accusations from at least one woman, Lucie Evans, who said Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex on him in 2004.”
Last November, the New York police said actress Paz de la Huerta levied credible accusations against Weinstein when she claimed he raped her twice in 2010.
This doesn’t stop in New York as Weinstein faces investigations in Los Angeles and London.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that federal prosecutors in Manhattan launched an investigation into Weinstein:
One issue in the investigation is whether Mr. Weinstein lured or induced any women to travel across state lines for the purpose of committing a sex crime, an offense that could allow for federal charges, some people familiar with the investigation said. The U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York is leading the inquiry. Some law-enforcement authorities have expressed frustration that local prosecutors haven’t brought criminal charges against Mr. Weinstein. The veteran Hollywood producer faces sexual-harassment accusations from dozens of women, including allegations of rape and sexual assault.
