Whew boy. This has not been a good few days for the “any suggestion the FBI was out to damage Trump is conspiratorial kookery” crowd.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, Sen. Ron Johnson, requested information from FBI Director Christopher Wray Monday.
Emails referenced in the request suggest former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe and a “sensitive matter team” were intimately aware of CNN’s possession of the Steele Dossier before Trump was briefed by Comey.
Further, emails sent by McCabe to senior FBI officials with the subject line, “Flood is coming.” A flood? What about a Crossfire Hurricane? “CNN is close to going forward with the sensitive story…The trigger for them [CNN] is they know the material was discussed in the brief and presented as an attachment.”
McCabe’s email was sent two days after Comey briefed Trump. And two days after McCabe’s email, CNN ran their story.
We know, based on a DOJ IG report, that McCabe leaked sensitive information to the press and then lied about it. It’s what got him fired.
Sen. Johnson’s letter outlines the timeline of events:
Monday, the DOJ gave the Inspector General broader authority to “include any irregularities with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s or the Department of Justice’s tactics concerning the Trump Campaign,” and not a moment too soon.
