Pelosi’s Bitterness Shines Through, Slamming Wage Raises and Immigration Negotiation

What the heck was wrong with Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Thursday? I planned to write up one set of comments, but I’m glad I didn’t because another set of comments came up today that received criticism from her #2 in the House.

These comments included slamming the companies that have used their savings from the tax reform bill to give raises and bonuses to their employees. Then she criticized the fact that five white guys have started to work on a DACA bill and asked if they wanted to open a hamburger stand, which Minority Steny Hoyer (D-MD) called offensive.

Wage Increases are “Pathetic”

Way to show you’re for the working class, Pelosi. Ever since Congress and President Donald Trump signed the tax reform bill, companies have announced massive changes that include bonuses and raises for employees.

I said during the process that the more money a company can keep the more those in charge can raise salaries and expand, thus creating more jobs.

No, that’s not good enough for Pelosi.

The Washington Free Beacon provided this transcript:

“A number of companies are attributing the tax bill for being able to give higher wages to their employees as well as being able to give a number of bonuses to their employees. How do you respond to that?” a reporter asked.Pelosi appeared to be talking about AT&T when she responded by downplaying the bonuses and saying that it was already part of a union contract. She went on to say that the same firm told their employees that they would be laying off 1,500 people and that if they wanted to save their jobs then they would have to work 32 hours per week.”In terms of the bonus that corporate America received versus the crumbs that they are giving workers to kind of put the schmooze on is so pathetic. It’s so pathetic,” Pelosi said.”I would hope that with their big advantage of bringing money home at a very low rate that they would invest in infrastructure and things, but our experience has been that they will do dividends, do stock buybacks, and things like that. I think it’s insignificant,” Pelosi added.

Actually, Nancy, some have included infrastructure. Comcast officials said that they wand to spend “well in excess of $50 billion over the next five years investing in infrastructure to radically improve and extend our broadband plant and capacity, and our television, film and theme park offerings.”

Fiat Chrysler will use the savings for employees and also move a plant from Saltillo, Mexico to Warren Michigan.

Southwest Airlines will use some of the savings to purchase even more planes from Boeing.

Hamburger Stand

Pelosi then went on to complain that “five white guys” have led the immigration talks and did not include any minority members. From Politico:

“The five white guys I call them, you know,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference. “Are they going to open a hamburger stand next or what?” Pelosi said, complaining that minority members of Congress were not involved in deciding the fate of Dreamers.—“That could’ve been done four months ago. The very idea that this week they’re saying, ‘Oh why don’t we get four white guys and General Kelly to come and do this,’” she continued. The lack of minority involvement only serves to delay a deal, she argued, since it would need sign-off from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and others.

Thing is, the meetings include members of both parties like Hoyer and Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL).

Obviously her comment referred to the hamburger chain Five Guys. Maybe she thought she could get away with it since white people can’t be offended?

She thought wrong because Hoyer, the #2 Democrat in the House, showed great displeasure over her choice of words:

“That comment is offensive. I am committed to ensuring DREAMers are protected and I will welcome everyone to the table who wants to get this done,” Hoyer said to POLITICO in a statement.
