Trump also denounced radical Islamic terrorism and other totalitarian regimes.

President Donald Trump delivered a 40 minute speech to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday morning, in which he vowed to always put America first and denounced totalitarian regimes across the world that have demolished their country.

Trump also spoke out against radical Islamic terrorists, promising to “crush the loser terrorists.”

North Korea

Trump almost immediately jumped on the subject of North Korea, who has been testing nuclear weapons and firing long range missiles over Japan. However, he did not address Kim Jong Un by name. He used his own nickname for him. From ABC News:

“Rocket man is on a suicide mission,” Trump said.

He continued, “No nation on earth has an interest in seeing this band of criminals arm itself with nuclear weapons and missiles. The United States has great strength and patience, but if it is forced to defend itself or its allies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea. Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime. The United States is ready, willing and able, but hopefully this will not be necessary.”

Trump called on all nations to isolate the Kim regime in light of its “reckless pursuit” of nuclear weapons and treatment of its citizens.

He also lashed out at those who continue trade with the regime. From The Boston Herald:

“It’s an outrage that some nations would not only trade with such a regime, but would arm, supply and financially support a country that imperils the world with nuclear conflict,” said Trump. “No nation on earth has an interest in seeing this band of criminals arm itself with nuclear weapons and missiles.”

Trump did thank China and Russia, North Korea’s only remaining large allies, for voting for tougher sanctions on the UN Security Council.

The president will hold a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday.

Venezuela

Trump then turned his attention to other totalitarian regimes that have decimated their countries with socialism, especially in Venezuela. He said:

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s socialist policies have allowed the once thriving country to spiral out of control, leaving hunger and death in its tracks. Trump told the UN “that the goal is for the country’s people to ‘regain their freedom, recover their country and restore their democracy.'”

Iran

Trump also dug into Iran by calling the regime “a corrupt dictatorship behind the false guise of a democracy.” He told Iran that the regime needs to release its political prisoners. From The Independent:

“It is time for the entire world to join us in demanding that Iran’s government end its pursuit of death and destruction,” Mr Trump said. “It is time for the regime to free all Americans and citizens of other nations that they have unjustly detained. And above all, Iran’s government must stop supporting terrorists, begin serving its own people, and respect the sovereign rights of its neighbors.”

Trump went on to trash the Iran nuclear deal established under former President Barack Obame. The Independent wrote:

Donald Trump says that Iran is a “murderous regime” and that the nuclear deal negotiated by his predecessor with the country is an “embarrassment”.

Mr Trump gave the harsh assessment of the Persian nation during his first address to the United Nations General Assembly as President.

“The Iran deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the US has ever entered into,” Mr Trump said. “Frankly, that deal is an embarrassment to the United States, and I don’t think you’ve heard the last of it. Believe me.”

Radical Islamic Terrorism

Yes, Trump called out radical Islamic terrorism BY NAME in his speech. From CBS New York:

The president talked tough on terror saying “it is time to expose and hold responsible” nations that provide funding and safe harbor to terror groups. He says all responsible nations must work together to confront terrorists and “the Islamic extremist that inspires them.”

“We will stop radical Islamic terrorism, because we cannot allow it to tear up our nation and, indeed, to tear up the entire world,” said the president.

How does he NOT own a cowboy hat?

That last part, naming radical Islamic terrorism… I have a small, sneaking suspicion that his omission of that in a recent speech was Lucy with the football… in the reverse of the usual situation to which followers of politics are accustomed.

I guess he is something of a drama addict.

The President spoke to not a few criminals right there in the hall, or the “governments” they represent. Is Iran or Cuba still on the UN “Human Rights Commission?”

IIRC, there’s also a delegation from the Palestinian Authority at the UN, speaking of a band of criminals.

And “Rocket man” — gotta love some tough talk from New Yawk!

This is so much more preferable than losing gracefully as our Republican allies would have us do.

Thanks, President Trump. Now, I will have this song as an earworm all day!!!

Still… words… we are going to have to smash something hard to reinforce this. However, I see this happening now rather than in the last 8 years. Sort of makes one wonder why that US nuke sub flew the Jolly Roger…. oh… if we only knew.

Understand your cynicism, but I believe this is the first time in recent memory that the UN has actually faced honest public criticism from a US president. Before that, it was all process, getting the bureaucrats permission to proceed.

If Iranians get to hear this, it could lead to a new uprising, per his remarks about John Adams and the American Revolution.

Venezuela deserved every bit of his commentary, while our local socialists have to endure the same criticism of their ideas (don’t really work, do they?).

This is diplomacy and persuasion. Surely you don’t think it would have been more persuasive if Trump announced airstrikes on NK, Iran and Venezuela?

This is in the right direction. Some we shamed and others were inspired, but nobody was in doubt about the US position.

I agree. Not so much cynicism as having now to back up those words with actions. It doesn’t have to be big just sharp and decisive such as Reagan with Libya if it comes to that.

after 8 years of apologies…It’s a start. Smart like fox. Tough like bull.

In an episode of Big Bang Theory, Howard Wolowitz before making a trip to the Int’l space station was trying to get everyone to call him Rocket Man. NASA astronaut Mike Massimino (playing himself) overheard Mrs, Wolowitz yell out “Howard, your fruit loops are ready. ” and from there on Massimino kept referring to Howard as “Fruit Loops. That is a perfect name for Rocket Man Kim.

I’m at loss for this, too, feets.

I particularly liked the part about being embarrassed by the Iran nuclear deal.
