U. Chicago Students Demand Reparations for Slavery

U. Chicago Students Demand Reparations for Slavery

“slave labor was critical to its establishment”

This is one of those issues that seems to come up on various college campuses two or three times a year.

The Daily Caller reports:

Students Make Reparations Demands At The University Of Chicago

A student group demanded reparations for slavery at the University of Chicago and the creation of an African American studies department in an article published in early June and first reported Monday.

Reparations at UChicago Working Group, a student group at the University of Chicago, made these demands and others in a Chicago Reporter article, according to Campus Reform.

“Black people do not need a seat at the university’s reparations table,” wrote the group. “They need to own that table and have full control over how reparations are structured.”

“The University of Chicago owes it entire presence to its past with slavery,” argue the students, explaining that slave labor was critical to its establishment.

Reparations at UChicago Working Group consists of history PhD students Ashley Finigan, Kai Parker, and Caine Jordan, as well as Guy Emerson Mount, coordinator for the University of Chicago’s U.S. History Workshop.

“Establishing an African American Studies department should be a no-brainer. So, too, should be a concerted effort to recruit and develop faculty of color while vigorously recruiting and mentoring underrepresented students to attend the university. But this should happen anyway. It’s not reparations.”

So … they’re not demanding reparations, they’re demanding that whitey give them more free handouts.

What a surprise.

What does an African American Studies department do, anyway? Besides being a handy place to dump the affirmative action faculty they don’t want diluting the Physics department, that is. Perhaps it offers courses in how to demand more free stuff.

My cynical mind says that universities with [insert grievance group here] studies departments have them to keep the federal government off their backs. They are compelled to accept so many of this or that unqualified group, and “studies” departments provide courses of study the unqualified can advance in, and eventually graduate. It also keeps the unqualified out of the way of students there to get an education in something useful, or who are there to take a liberal arts type of degree in the 1950s meaning of the term.

My ancestors came to America mostly after the civil war, and although I’ve been informed that a branch of my moms family waaaay back had a plantation somewhere in the Caribbean , her branch wasn’t that branch and didn’t get any of that money. So maybe 1/512th common ancestry with actual slave owners at worst?

Whereas, say, obama’s got slave holders on his mom’s side, and slave holders AND sellers on his dad’s side? Yeah, let’s not forget that for every purchaser of an African slave there was an African capturing and selling that person. Given his dads’s Islamic faith, good chance slave owners in has family well past the 1860s too.

So my family, middle class mostly, has to pay up reparations and Obana’s family, including an actual millionaire, doesn’t? In fact we with little to do with slavery have to pay HIM? Ludicrous.

As for the demanded African American Studies department, I have yet to notice a sizable shortage of job seekers for the vast empty job positions that require such a degree. If I gave into schadenfreude, I’d be in favor of giving these “students” what they ask for, as long as we require them personally spend their tens of thousands of dollars and several years of their lives getting AAS degrees before they enter their exciting new careers as coffee preparation technicians and convenience store cashiers.

Not every uni has a physics or policing or medical degree track, nor should they. AAS, even if you think the world of such a track, is no different. And there’s no shortage of uni’s that already have an AAS track out there if a particular student feels called to get such a degree, without requiring every single uni provide it as an option.

University of Chicago was founded in 1890. In what way/universe does that have anything to do with slavery. We are really in an alternate universe.

“To those demanding an African American Studies Department: No.

To those demanding reparations for slavery: No.

Students who are dissatisfied with these answers may pick up their transcripts at the registrar’s office, pay any outstanding dues, fees, and tuition at the bursar’s office.

Faculty who are dissatisfied with these answers are to have their letters of resignation on my desk no later than Monday.

To both students and faculty dissatisfied with my decisions: attached is a list of rental truck companies, suppliers of packing materials, and the URL for the US Census Bureau that allows you to look up the demographics of any community in the country. These lists will allow you to plan your move to a community in which you will feel more comfortable.

i say they should offer reparations, but only to students that can prove they, personally, were enslaved at one time or another in their lives…

and i mean *physically* enslaved, not whatever poli-sci mumbo-jumbo BS they come up with.

Reparations eh? Having given this much thought, I have decided as follows:

1) I will pay to the first POC who asks for it the sum of $1,000,000 for each and every slave I have ever owned.
2) I will additionally pay to the first POC who asks for it the sum of $1,000,000 for each and every slave my father ever owned.
3) I will further pay to the first POC who asks for it the sum of $1,000,000 for each and every slave my grandfather ever owned.
4) I will finally pay to the first POC who asks for it the sum of $1,000,000 for each and every slave my great-grandfather ever owned.

This takes me back ancestrally to the furthest point in time that my (white European) family was on this continent. If I have done the math correctly, that means I will owe a sum total of … let’s see, carry the total from Column One forward, add the total from Column Two which gives a Grand Total of … uh, check that math, wouldn’t want any mistakes … yes, that yields the handsome cum of …..

Exactly Zero Dollars and No Cents! As noted above, this will be paid by check to the first POC who asks for it!

Gosh, my conscience is much cleaner now!

Complete and rightful reparations would be free passage back to Africa. I would gladly pay my share of a program like that.

Isn’t the deaths of the hundreds of thousands of Union soldiers who died fighting to free the slaves reparation enough?
>
Isn’t the trillions of dollars that have gone into welfare (that predominantly helps the black families) over the last few decades reparation enough?
>
Isn’t the long term use of Affirmative Action where blacks received special treatment such as full ride scholarships, special advantages to getting into colleges or in finding employment, and so forth, reparations enough?
>
What they are demanding is not reparations. Blacks know that there are many who harbor white guilt so these blacks are trying to manipulate them even further to see how much more free stuff they can get for whatever excuse they can formulate. While liberals are so gullible that they would believe almost anything and these blacks are taking advantage of them every step of theway.

Guilt, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Uh-huh
Guilt, huh, yeah
What is it good for
Absolutely nothing
Say it again, y’all

Sorru, I just had a flashback to the 70’s.
