Authorities found two Super Bowl jerseys worn by New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.
The lost jerseys were found with a credentialed member of the international media. From KPRC:
Houston police Chief Art Acevedo said that a tip from someone in Houston led investigators to a location in Mexico, where the jerseys were found.”You don’t come to Texas and steal when the eyes of the world are upon our state,” Acevedo said.
Brady could not find the jersey after the Patriots comeback win against the Atlanta Falcons at Houston’s NRG Stadium:
“I put it in my bag and I came out and it wasn’t there anymore,” Brady said the next day. “It’s unfortunate, because that’s a nice piece of memorabilia.”
The jersey means a lot to Brady because of the historic win in overtime. The report with the Houston Police Department valued the jersey at $500,000.
Acevedo confirmed the Boston FBI division has the jerseys and the NFL will verify “the authenticity of the jerseys.”
Media attention led HPD to seriously pursue the case:
“At the end of the day, it’s a jersey, but we don have pride in our city,” Acevedo said. “We have pride in our department and we have pride in our country, and I’m glad we were able to solve it.”
The U.S. District Attorney’s Office will determine the charges the person responsible will face. Acevedo said the man “could face charges of transporting stolen goods across state lines.”
The NFL credentialed 5,700 media members, “including several hundred from Mexico.”
