Houston, TX, just hosted another Super Bowl to rave reviews, but it may be the last one for the Lone Star State if the state passes its own bathroom bill. From The Houston Chronicle:
“If a proposal that is discriminatory or inconsistent with our values were to become law (in Texas), that would certainly be a factor considered when thinking about awarding future events,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in an email response to a Chronicle question about the bill.It was the league’s first statement on the matter since the legislation was introduced in January.”The NFL embraces inclusiveness,” McCarthy added. “We want all fans to feel welcomed at our events, and NFL policies prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or any other improper standard.”
The Texas Privacy Act requires “transgender people to use public bathrooms based on their biological sex and not the gender of their choice.”
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said the bill protects the public, but also “declared it one of the ‘conservative principles’ that protect ‘Texas values.'”
But some have not welcomed the bill out of fear it could harm the state’s reputation. They have pointed out the consequences North Carolina has faced due to its bathroom bill. The NCAA removed seven previously scheduled championship events from the state, including the first and second round games of the NCAA men’s championship basketball tournament. The NBA also moved its All-Star Game out of North Carolina due to the bill
