President-elect Donald Trump and President Barack Obama met at the White House for around 90 minutes to discuss transition of power. Trump called Obama a very good man and hopes to work with him in the future, while Obama called the meeting excellent:
Obama said the two men talked about foreign policy and domestic policy and said he was encouraged by Trump’s interest in working together during the transition.”As I said last night, my No. 1 priority in the next two months is to try to facilitate a transition that ensures our President-elect is successful,” Obama said.Obama told Trump: “If you succeed, the country succeeds,” as the two men sat in high-backed chairs in front of the fireplace in the Oval Office.
The meeting, originally scheduled for 10 minutes, could have gone longer:
Mr Trump said he would “very much look forward” to dealing with President Obama in future.”I have great respect, the meeting lasted for almost an hour and a half, and it could’ve, as far as I’m concerned, it could’ve gone on for a lot longer,” the president-elect said.”We discussed a lot of different situations – some wonderful and some difficulties.”
First Lady Michelle Obama and Melania Trump met privately in the White House residence.
Vice President Joe Biden will meet with Vice President-elect Mike Pence later today.
Next for Trump is a trip to Capitol Hill to meet with Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Come January, the GOP will have control of Congress and the White House. Pence will accompany Trump to those meetings.
Trump defeated Hillary Clinton on Tuesday, taking the country by storm. But after a nasty and turbulent election season, both sides have shown class, civility, and dignity.
In a speech on Wednesday devoid of negativity or bitterness, Obama promised that he and his staff will make sure to provide Trump with a smooth transition. He also reminded supporters on his side that everyone is on the same team.
In her speech, Hillary held her head high and also avoided negativity. She told her supporters to basically give Trump the benefit of the doubt and they “owe him an open mind and a chance to lead.”
