VIDEO: Black Fathers Matter

The newest video offering from Prager University features talk host Larry Elder talking about fathers and fatherhood just in time for Father’s Day.

Elder looks at how government programs intended to end poverty have affected the black community and encouraged men to abandon their moral and financial obligations as fathers.

Using real statistics and evidence, Elder makes a compelling case for the importance of fathers and the role they play in the lives of boys and young men.

Of course, the principles Elder discusses matter to people of all races.

The diminished role of fathers can be seen in our culture. In many modern films, TV shows and even commercials, the father is often treated like the bumbling family moron.

If you watch the entire video below, you’ll hear Elder tell a touching story about his own father and the impact he had on his own life.

Here’s the official video description from Prager University:

Which poses a bigger threat to black communities: Racism? Or the absence of fathers? Drawing on a sea of official data and his own upbringing, talk-show host Larry Elder shows just how important black fathers are in turning boys into responsible and happy men–and how their absence has had a tragic impact on millions of black Americans.

A recent report from Trib Live confirms many of the things Elder says about fatherhood:

Report: Fathers gain inner peace from involvement in raising kidsHealthy, involved dads lead to healthy lads and ladies. That’s the crux of a comprehensive report released Monday by The American Academy of Pediatrics, examining the science behind fatherhood and the role pediatricians can play in encouraging robust and rewarding father-child relationships. There’s no exact scientific manner in measuring what constitutes a good dad. Still, evidence cited in the report shows there are serious benefits for children with dads who nurture, play and spend time with them. They tend to have better grades and social skills and avoid drugs, teenage pregnancy and delinquency.

Here’s wishing an early happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.
