Housekeeping – User Accounts – Readers Take Note

Housekeeping – User Accounts – Readers Take Note

Eliminating fake User accounts by deleting accounts that never have commented. See below for details.

We need to do a little maintenance on our vast database of User accounts. It will happen overnight early in the morning (Eastern) of May 13.

You don’t need to register as a User (“Subscribe”) to read the website. You only need to register to comment or to use the Thumbs Up/Down on comments.

For the first couple of years after moving to a self-hosted WordPress site (from Google Blogger) in June 2011, we did not have a “Captcha” screen when signing up for User accounts.

https://legalinsurrection.com/2011/06/legal-insurrection-has-landed-you-are-free-to-move-about-the-blog/

Hence, we have hundreds of thousands of “fake” User accounts established by robots that never have commented. That huge database is causing us some server problems.

One solution is to ditch hosting our own Users and Comments, and move to a third party solution like Disqus. That would be the commercially smart thing to do.

But, it would increase the drive-by commenters who have no interest other than in throwing hand grenades into a crowded comment section. Someday we may have to do that, but we’re trying to hold off the incoming tide as long as possible.

So we are eliminating User accounts which never have commented.

So, if you ever have commented, even once, you are fine and don’t need to do anything.

If you never have commented, and your User account is eliminated, you can sign up again.

Or if you never have commented, you can preempt the problem now, by commenting on this post, even just a “Yes” or “Save Me” or “WTF?” You have until midnight Tuesday night, May 12, to do so.

Save Me

Sorry just had to make sure there was at least one comment on this post. There was something more than a little ironic about seeing “No Comments” on a post about deleting accounts for not commenting.

Save me! My son is heading to Cornell in the Fall and I am counting on some College Insurrection info to stay informed!

Exiliado in reply to Floridamom. | May 11, 2015 at 7:39 pm

You don’t need to signup to read the blog.

    😆

Casey Breznick in reply to Floridamom. | May 11, 2015 at 9:26 pm

Hey Floridamom, if your son is interested in writing for a conservative publication at Cornell, tell him to email [email protected]! I’m the editor-in-chief of The Cornell Review and occasionally post here too. Check out our website at blog.thecornellreview.com.

It’s a great organization to get into, a great community to be part of, and, perhaps most importantly, it helps keep you sane amidst the absurdity of most of what goes on at Cornell.

From Cornell Alum and current employee: Read “Finding Truth” by Nancy Pearcey. Then have your son read it.

Should you ever seriously contemplate entering the cesspool that is Disqus, you ought to simply erect a paywall. That, or you could dig a verbal mote and stock it with aligators.

I’m a regular reader and Tweet a lot of LI posts. But not great in the commenting department. But I’d like to keep my account here 🙂 Thanks for the excellent work you do, Prof.

Save me.

bob aka either orr | May 11, 2015 at 7:20 pm

save me, por favor.

Are you SURE some of the comments aren’t being made by Robots?!?

Save Me.

I am somewhere between Windows7, protection software and Mars. My comments are on their way in cyberspace. Save a byte for me. Si vous plait.

Just in case.

Yes I have, but better safe than gone !

Just checking… Tap tap…

i can has hand grenades?

Do dem has on off switches?

No, oncet Mistah Grenade’s pin iz pulled, he is no longah you fren.

A Reading from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20:

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, “Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.” And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals … Now did the Lord say, “First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.”

Am I still here?

civil truth | May 11, 2015 at 7:56 pm

I don’t comment very often, but like to have the option available when the occasion arises. And do try to avoid surrendering to Disqus if you can.

https://youtu.be/5LTjfD-6N-o

This site’s comments section is a welcome bit of civilized discussion. Though Disqus makes it easy to have a single user acct for many sites it does draw in too much venom in exchange.

C’mon all you NSA folks out in Utah … better say something. Just don’t say something like ‘0bama is GOD’, ’cause then we’ll know who you are.

ok, so I commented. and now i count?

Whippersnapper | May 11, 2015 at 8:13 pm

Good move and, yes, save me.

Registered for the thumb; commenting to keep it. Thanks for the heads up.

Just in case. 🙂

ditto

Hundreds of thousands of “fake” user accounts? How many are from .ir domains?

legacyrepublican in reply to snopercod. | May 11, 2015 at 10:28 pm

Well, if they are .ir, then he will pull the proverbial Persian rug from underneath their tweet.

Let the good times roll

Deleting accounts overnight?!! Is Hillary Clinton your sysadmin?

Disqus – ugh. Captcha – ugh. Please not Facebook! First is too intrusive and the second is frustrating and idiotic. The third is downright creepy. PJ Media has one sign up for all their authors, each who have their own site (I think). Maybe you could partner with other conservative sites using the same principle. Don’t they have a blogger’s conference or group to discuss these things?

commmmment

I hate housekeeping. 😉

OK – here’s my comment.

Just in case.

Most of my comments seem to disappear; here’s just a little insurance.

My ‘save me’ comment never showed up. With this one, I’ll try the preview first just to see if it makes any difference.

Just in case.

That was close. I thought I was a nobody for a moment. . .

theduchessofkitty | May 11, 2015 at 9:53 pm

Just in case, here I am. Save me.

SOS

Please don’t go to Disqus. The WESH article today on Zimmerman had over 2000 comments in about 4 hours.

It becomes slow and unusable at that point. And yes many of them were just trolling for responses.

One of my favorites….”Trayvon would just be finishing college this year if he hadn’t been murdered by….”

That, and they don’t keep a tally of downvotes anymore. Can’t be hurting anybodys feelings.

Pettifogger | May 11, 2015 at 10:14 pm

You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.

Please save me. Your efforts are appreciated.

sunlightmoonlight | May 11, 2015 at 10:34 pm

I’m here – please don’t banish me!

Still here!

sunlightmoonlight | May 11, 2015 at 10:36 pm

UH OH – I commented, but I don’t see it. Have I already been disappeared?

Standing my ground 🙂

Testing. Testing……Is this thing on?

🙂 Good idea and thanks.

We’ll see how this goes. Previously my comments have not shown up, and I gave up commenting.

Sam in Texas | May 11, 2015 at 11:14 pm

Hep me. Hep me. Please please hep me.

Sam in Texas | May 11, 2015 at 11:18 pm

Are these comments moderated?

I want to stay!

I comment, therefore I am? Somewhere William Shakespeare is Po’ed.

Yes, Save Me and WTF?
I hope it’s not too late, but this is not my first post anyway. It was just a long time ago’.
Cheers

I promise not to feed the trolls. Shake my head in disgust? Yes. But feed them? Never!

I am not a robot (though I doubt I could pass a Turing test.)

Save me

Save me too!

Save me.

coffee_cup101 | May 12, 2015 at 2:29 am

Glad to be part of this community. I

Help me, Obi-wan Kenobi. You’re our only hope.

Commented only once before (on the deer on campus story some time back that was so hilarious). But I’m reading here every day. Thanks for all the work, information and decent comment threads.

NO! NO! NO!!!!!!!!!

One solution is to ditch hosting our own Users and Comments, and move to a third party solution like Disqus.

Nooooooo!

If it ever came to that, I’d rather see you go to a pay-to-play model, where it’s open admission for spectators (everything’s open for anyone to read), but to register an account for commenting would require a moderate monthly or annual subscription fee. And you all would still handle the comment system in-house.

Disqus (among other problems) really seems to open the door to seagulls… you know, the type that swoop in, make a lot of noise, poop extravagantly all over the place, then swoop out again :-/

All Seeing Eye | May 12, 2015 at 6:26 am

Don’t tase, er, delete me bro!

Thanks for the warning, guess it helps to be registered, too.

Had to make sure the log in still worked!

Trying again….

!

Thank you so much for trying to avoid using Disquis! I have abandoned several good sites because of it (RedState, Liberty Unyielding to name a couple) – and I don’t even comment that much, as you can tell by how often I comment here. Disquis slows down the loading of the pages a good bit, and yes, invites people to harass others across sites.

Keep up the good work! 🙂

I comment fairly frequently. As for Disqus, I understand the reluctance. The Breitbart sites are like pools of toxic waste, they are so full of the braindead and psychotic of the Left. I’m almost to the point of not reading any of their sites because to read and not comment is just about more than my self-control can withstand – then I get stalked and harassed (with email notifications to boot) by the insane. I think if Disqus were implemented here I’d have to give up LI for my own health and sanity.

Noooo, please don’t send me away.

Thanks for the heads up! I really enjoy the site, and the daily newsletter.

I’m pretty sure I’ve commented, but why take a chance…

Henry Hawkins | May 12, 2015 at 10:01 am

Not that anyone might give a crap, but when discus comes, I go. Can’t stand that platform.

I don’t think I have ever commented, but just knowing I can is a good thing.

Henry Hawkins | May 12, 2015 at 10:14 am

Yeah, my comments aren’t appearing.

Disqus – ugh. Captcha – ugh. Facebook – Hell no. The first and last are intrusive and creepy, and captcha is just plain idiotic and frustrating. I have abandoned many sites who use these. PJ Media uses one system for all their authors. Can’t LI team with other conservative bloggers to use a system that can be shared among their audiences? Don’t bloggers have an organization or group where they can discuss these types of issues?

Save me

Great site–thanks for all the info/entertainment!

Save me

Save me ….

DINORightMarie | May 12, 2015 at 11:33 am

lol Sounds fun!! 😉 See you on the other side!! 😀

Good site, and it has my good housekeeping seal of approval. :-))

Henry Hawkins | May 12, 2015 at 11:55 am

Disqus sucks. Deal breaker for me.

save me, please…

Belial Issimo | May 12, 2015 at 12:21 pm

Hello world!

Save me please…
I love this site and visit daily.
Keep up the great work!
