ALEC, or the American Legislative Exchange Council is an organization that is described as such:
“…is a nonprofit organization of conservative state legislators and private sector representatives that drafts and shares model state-level legislation for distribution among state governments in the United States. According to its website, ALEC “works to advance the fundamental principles of free-market enterprise, limited government, and federalism at the state level through a nonpartisan public-private partnership of America’s state legislators, members of the private sector and the general public”.
To many Democrats and others on the left, however, ALEC is some kind of modern version of the Illuminati, secretly working to take over the United States, using the people within their organization to brainwash public officials into doing their bidding.
There is no better example of the conspiracy mindset about ALEC than that in this clip of Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina. Chris Matthews decided to give Clyburn free reign to spit out a whole host of conspiracy theories about ALEC:
Interesting how he cannot remember the name of an organization he claims is “a cancer, eating at the inners of our society.” In the space of about 15 seconds, Clyburn managed to blame ALEC for passage of stand your ground laws and voter ID laws, and said they’re behind the drawing of new congressional districts in the states.
All of this, he said, gave license to officer Michael Slager to be a “rogue” who did what he did because he thought there would be no consequences.
When told of Clyburn’s comments about Stand Your Ground laws being thrown into the mix, attorney and SYG expert Andrew Branca emailed the following statement:
The SC shooting of Scott by Slager has absolutely nothing whatever to do with SYG. May as well blame the Alternative Minimum Tax or Marbury v. Madison, both are just as relevant to this case as SYG.
The shooting of Walter Scott by Michael Slager was horrific. Slager has been fired and charged with murder. This is a tragic case where people on both sides of the political spectrum have spoken out in unison. Hard to figure out why some are still attempting to start a political fight over it.
