Apparently it’s serious. Manning announced on NBC via a letter that he will sue to force the Army to pay for hormone therapy, and presumably a sex change operation at some point, and to go by the name of Chelsea Manning:

Given the extremely high suicide rate among the “transgendered” population, why should taxpayers be paying for a “therapy” (i.e. sex change) for gender-disordered individuals that has such a poor success rate?
Where did you get the info that there is a high suicide rate among TG persons? I don’t know of any suicides among the people I know in the Chicago area or in general.
TG activists like to quote a statistic saying that 41 percent of transgendered people have attempted suicide. Whether it’s true or not, I would not know.

Whether or not “41%” is true is the right question. These kids may fill out a survey relating how in earnest they are about making a transition but the reality is different.
The survey may certainly be skewed from reality and is certainly different than what I have seen. Activists of course want you to empathize with their cause.
Most TG persons, I believe, know that if you attempt suicide you are not eligible to be considered a candidate for transition surgery.
That’s why I say “whether it’s true or not, I do not know” … the only transgender person I know in real life is actually pretty well adjusted, and lives a happy and productive life. And this is in a pretty small town, in the allegedly close-minded bigoted South.

This study found that the transsexual group had a 51% higher mortality rate than the general public, mainly from suicide, drug abuse, etc., after the surgery.
I can’t vouch for Europe (and its availability of drugs and its nihilsm). I can vouch for only what I have seen here.
I do believe that prior to this century making any such transition would have been very difficult to navigate.
My latest encounter with attempted suicide: A “genetic” woman stood on the tracks in front of our Metra train the other day hoping to take her life. The train stopped in time and she was carted off to a hospital.

I understand your point of view, but based upon my experience with male survivors of childhood sexual abuse, must respectfully disagree.
I’m not surprised homosexuals want to talk about a homosexual gene, because if the actual cause is childhood – or adult- sexual abuse, they certainly don’t want to talk about it. To them, there is guilt, shame and humiliation attached to it, even though they were completely innocent. So rather than tell you that their grandfather, or their coach abused them, they’ll tell you they were born that way.
They have an unimaginably tough life – and I mean life. I know men in their late 60s who still have serious problems from childhood abuse.
Homosexuality and “gender confusion” used to be diagnosed mental disorders to be treated. I still think the former is, not dissimilar to alcoholism or drug addiction. The latter is a bit more serious and those people should be treated for it, rather than the rest of society being turned upside down because responsible people are afraid of offending them.

A spokesperson for Leavenworth is saying “The Army does not provide hormone therapy or sex-reassignment surgery for gender identity disorder” … though we’ll see how long that lasts.

The interviewer is so compliant with calling him “her”, as if one can just choose one’s sex based on mental state of mind (or a lie). This conveniently falls in line with the PC school decision to let kids choose if they want to use the boys or girls bathroom if they “FEEL” like they are the opposite sex.
No amount of surgery can actually change a sex, regardless of what they cut off or rearrange. And false reports of the “gay gene” fall apart as we map the human genome. Yet we are led by these “progressives” to change rules and laws to comply with every PC special rights group they concoct.
Just say no to special treatment, and especially to a half million in surgery. But NBC plays right along and he must be accepted as “she”, and even respected as a special person with “her” own civil rights fight. They transition traitor Manning into a sympathetic character.

Several years ago, I met a man who had been raped for a period of years beginning when he was 5 years old. As a result of trying to understand him, I began reading on male victims of childhood sexual abuse, discovering that those whose suffered the worst kinds of abuse can have “alternate personalities,” one or more of which can be female. Some of these “girls” are hidden from view and some of them are out and about. The old name was multiple personality disorder and now they call it “dissociative identity disorder.” To me, it feels like dealing with multiple personalities who do not get along with each other very well.
Many men molested by men as boys have “same sex attraction” although they prefer females. They struggle with it, and dislike it intensely. I don’t know if there is a homosexual gene, but I do know that being abused as a child can have a lifelong effect on a man.

I have wondered if Bradley Manning was abused. He seems developmentally arrested with his childish concerns and comments, and alters are commonly stuck at the age at which they were abused. Not saying he has an alter, just saying… it wouldn’t surprise me. I know from experience, alters are easy to manipulate.
But for taxpayers, many of whom have suffered income cuts and many of whom don’t even have medical insurance, to be paying for the luxury of surgery for him, is immoral.
And yet NAMBLA is trying to get adult/child predation legalized and acceptable.

Let’s get to the real issue here. Who recruited this creep? Nobody in the chain of command noticed he was a bit off? Why he was he allowed near highly classified info and systems? Did the same guy recruit Nidal Hasan and recommend Snowden for his job at the NSA? There has to be a fundamental revamping of the security clearance process and people should be held accountable for clearing people who should not be cleared.
Not sure if the problem is recruitment. From what I heard from the trial he had the same command staff Nidal Hasan had. He has problems but some counseling will fix it. Morons should have took him off the job when he started showing issues.

The back and forth in the talk page for that article is interesting. But I find it curious that they’ve changed the pronouns to ‘she’ when referring to historical events in Manning’s life.
NC Mountain Girl is right. Manning’s been so devoted to the ‘Lookit me!’ philosophy of life that selling out his duties and country take second place. Now having been righteously convicted, he’s playing his few remaining cards in a way calculated to reap yet more attention, this time from the LGBT crowd who own some very wide-reaching publicity orgs and some very intense partisans.
He must be pretty desperate to resort to playing the trans card, I bet his ‘deck’ is looking pretty small right now.
Where to start?
First, why on earth do we, the taxpayers, have to pay for this sort of thing?
Second, I suppose this is his way of proving he is a lover, not a fighter. She is going to be a busy girl, and quite popular, for the next 35 years or so.
Third, how do we reconcile this sort of thing with the statements made by politicians such as New Jersey’s Crispy Creme? Just this past week he signed a law that says it’s a crime to try to change someone’s mind about their sexuality, yet it’s legal to confiscate my tax dollars to fund SURGERY to actually change someone’s sex organs?
