IRS anti-Tea Party scandal gets real — senior IRS officials aware of targeting (Update – Chief Counsel knew and targets expanded to groups “educating on the Constitution and Bill of Rights”)

This is getting real.

Yesterday it was just some “low level” employees involved. Now AP is reporting that senior IRS officials were aware of the targeting, via AP, IRS watchdog: Senior IRS officials knew in 2011 tea parties’ tax-exempt status being targeted (h/t @GabrielMalor):

WASHINGTON (AP) — IRS watchdog: Senior IRS officials knew in 2011 tea parties’ tax-exempt status being targeted.

(added) AP has expanded its report now (h/t reader):

A federal watchdog’s upcoming report says senior Internal Revenue Service officials knew agents were targeting tea party groups in 2011.

The disclosure contradicts public statements by former IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman, who repeatedly assured Congress that conservative groups were not targeted.

On Friday, the IRS apologized for what it acknowledged was “inappropriate” targeting of conservative political groups during the 2012 election to see if those groups were violating their tax-exempt status.

The Treasury’s inspector general for tax administration is expected to release the results of a nearly yearlong investigation in the coming week.

The Associated Press obtained part of the draft report.

That report says the head of the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt groups learned that groups were being targeted in June 2011. It does not say whether Shulman was notified.

Remember, you’re not paranoid, they really do hate you. At the highest levels.

As IRS admits it targeted Tea Party groups, remember IRS is Obamacare enforcer.

UPDATE: The AP story is ever-expanding in its detail. H/t Ed Morrissey on this part:

Among the other revelations, on Aug. 4, 2011, staffers in the IRS’ Rulings and Agreements office “held a meeting with chief counsel so that everyone would have the latest information on the issue.”

On Jan, 25, 2012, the criteria for flagging suspect groups was changed to, “political action type organizations involved in limiting/expanding Government, educating on the Constitution and Bill of Rights, social economic reform/movement,” the report says.

Got that? The Chief Counsel knew, and in an election year the targeting expanded to groups educating people on the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

The Democrats and media demonized the Tea Party and Homeland Security painted smaller government groups as potential threats, and guess who gets targeted by the IRS.

….and it’s not a conspiracy theory if “they” really are plotting to do bad things. And of course by “they” I mean politicians and the federal government!! 😀

LI readers s/b comforted in knowing that these government employees, senior and low-level, will all enjoy immunity from lawsuit for these egregious acts which their DOJ lawyers will argue was within the discretionary scope of their employment. The burden of proof that these were not within that scope would then shift to the complaining organizations. In other words, it is all stacked against you, not forgetting that you’d be suing in a federal court (ie, a government paid judge).

Nope. That ain’t true. Somebody MAY have told them that, but it is NOT the case.

Which is why the Founders didn’t bother suing King George’s tax collectors, just went straight to the tar and feathers.

Again t\The Establishment GOP just approved an appointee without question forgetting that the Senate shall investigate the nominee not do a hatch.

Did IRS commissioner Doug Shulman, a Bush appointee, know about the targeting of Tea Party groups ? It has been reported that IRS chief counsel, William J. Wilkins, an Obama appointee, not only knew, but met with the group performing the inquiry. Are we to believe that these guys never talked, or that the chief counsel was running his own “game on the side” ?
If Shulman didn’t know, then this scandal begs for a path to the White House, if he knew it takes a diabolic quality.

What I’d like to know is how this story got out of the bag in the first place? Did an IRS agent say to himself one day, gee, let me tell the press I’ve been targeting conservatives? And just how long has the WH known anout this and why was it announced on the day the MSM started getting curious about Benghazi?? This jaded New Yorker wants lots more answers!

I think we have that answer now, the report was coming out next week. Classic Friday news dump mangled as only the hacks by whom we are currently governed could manage.

So, we have Fast & Furious, Benghazi, and now this… are Boehner and the Stupid Party FINALLY going to get their asses in gear?

What I’d like to know is how this story got out of the bag in the first place?

It’s an inoculation. They knew the report was coming out soon, probably Monday, so break it on a Friday, and by Monday, it’s “old news.”

This is obviously Bush’s fault.

This has been going on for a long time. I remember back as far a late 2009, when a Florida Tea Party group was sent a letter because they had their permit fee waived for use of a public park (after a fight), and the IRS wanted to call that “income”.

No matter, Jay Carney offers simple explanations:

-BUSH! (appointee)

-IRS? Never heard of it! (different entity)

What did Obama know, and when did he know it?

“They cling to their guns and their constitution … ” Obama is using the power of the executive and alliances with enemies to punish traditional America, his enemy. “God Damn America”, his mentor taught.

Now consider this, and thank the open borders, sanctuary cities crowd. “Mexico Drug Lord Recruited 100,000 Chicago Gang Members To Deal Drugs”.

So we have Holder using his power to deliever 2500 weapons to the cartels, Napolitano prosecutes states that try to control the border, keeping the illegal highway to Chicago wide open. And Obamacare and food stamps are made available to illegal aliens, with amnesty now being thrust upon us.

We are at war.

Is it too soon to ask who’s up for President Biden?

This is why I pay taxes? To support IRS drone-snooping activity?

I’m getting pretty god-damned sick and tired of being treated like a second class citizen singled out for my beliefs. Shit’s getting real all right.

These must be senior “low level” IRS employees

In a sane world we would be talking about impeachment for this now.

Of course the same is true for Fast and Furious and Benghazi.

Our political system is broken. Obama and the State Media know this and will leverage it to the hilt. They can do *anything* and no one will call them on it.

Clearly, President Obama wasn’t involved because he is always totally misinformed by his hapless staff and besides, he doesn’t enemy know how to spell I-R-S

Hey, here’s a good question:

Good question @stephenfhayes @richardgrenell “@forewit: Did Obama see Romney’s tax records & use that info to call on him to disclose them?”

— Jason (@27jaaw27) May 11, 2013

Remember how much Harry Reid was mouthing off about tax returns? Did the White House feed him some inside information, or did the IRS?

cdtaxlady in reply to MicahStone. | May 11, 2013 at 7:46 pm

I agree and I want to know – did he have access to IRS records? I am an Enrolled Agent, Licensed to Practice Before the IRS, and I am very concerned that this agency has been used politically /s

One of the charges in the Watergate articles of impeachment against nixon:

Article 2

Using the powers of the office of President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has repeatedly engaged in conduct violating the constitutional rights of citizens, impairing the due and proper administration of justice and the conduct of lawful inquiries, or contravening the laws governing agencies of the executive branch and the purposed of these agencies.

1. This conduct has included one or more of the following:
He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, endeavoured to obtain from the Internal Revenue Service, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, confidential information contained in income tax returns for purposed not authorized by law, and to cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigations to be intitiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner.

The House’s Articles of Impeachment against OBOZO can use the exact same working.

David Yotham in reply to MicahStone. | May 12, 2013 at 4:26 am

Can you imagine how the Administration would respond if every lawmaker in Washington received 10,000 of these letters with Obuttheads name on it – with Barry getting a couple of million forms? Do you think anyone would catch the hint – or they would just go on another vacation?

I’d like to see all these elite’s thrown in a black sack, and then the Potomac.

“The IRS” didn’t apologize to anyone; Lois Lerner apologized to a room full of lawyers at a conference. That’s simply not going to cut it.

Secondly, it’s been a bit confusing in the coverage, but it seems that there were actually two ways in which conservative groups were targeted. First, those who were applying for tax-exempt status were slow-walked through the process with onerous documentation requirements, and many have still not been approved. In addition, groups that already have tax-exempt status were subjected to obnoxious intimidation disguised as oversight.

Could someone let me know if that’s correct?

Estragon in reply to Moonbeam. | May 12, 2013 at 2:00 am

Note also that the ONLY reason for this “apology” was they got the heads-up about the story about to break. If not for that, it would have been continued arrogantly outraged denials and calling critics kooks and malcontents.

Impeach Obama, institute a flat tax. Since Obama is corrupting the institutions of government, we need sudden and relentless reform. The TPers in the House will have the balls to bring articles of impeachment. Ted Cruz in the Senate has the balls to present the argument that would sway all the GOP and a few Democrats into conviction the unscrupulous, corrupt bastard.

The timing on this is interesting. Hussein needed a distraction, so maybe this scandal waiting to break was moved up? Mark Levin got the Treasury to start the investigation a year ago. Did it take them all this time? Was it going to get buried? Will it provide a distraction to Benghazi?

Maybe it’s time for some bumper stickers:
1) Remember Benghazi
2) Impeach the Liar
3) “Obama” is African for “Nixon”

So the opposition was singled out for harassment in 2012 by the Administration.

“What difference, at this point, does it make?”

While I consider this to be a crime against democracy, an existential threat to our form of government, is it necessarily the case that laws were broken? What charges (if any) are those involved likely to face?

Just because you are paranoid doesn’t mean they are not out to get you.

This revelation has been cooking for over a year, check the Mark levin website.

Is it time yet?

Let’s see: the innocent get harrassed and prosecuted, while the criminals (see New Black Panthers and illegals) get off the hook.

Welcome to the Øbama Bizarro World (read it: a fundamentally changed America)!

No wonder they are trying so hard to disarm us.

I believe in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, in smaller government and in balanced federal budgets, therefore I am an enemy of the state and am loathed by the elites in government who are stealing our nations wealth.
Something has to change drastically and soon!

teapartydoc | May 12, 2013 at 8:12 am

Does anyone actually believe that our fascist chief executive was totally unaware of this?

Obama has proudly stated that he intends to “punish” his “enemies” and “reward” his “friends.” In true dictator fashion, he does just that. We are surprised why?
