The good news: 7 Saudi men spared death by firing squad and crucifixion

The bad news?

Saudi Arabia beheads 7 men after appeals rejected:

Seven Saudi men convicted of theft, looting and armed robbery were beheaded on Wednesday, according to the country’s official news agency, more than a week after their families and rights group appealed to the king for clemency….

One of the men told The Associated Press earlier this month that he was only 15 when he was arrested as part of a ring that stole jewelry in 2004 and 2005. Nasser al-Qahtani said he was tortured to confess and had no access to lawyers.

Al-Qahtani said that during the years-long trial, he only faced the judge three times and when the men tried to complain to the judge about the torture or show torture marks on their bodies, they were ignored. He also said the judge never assigned him a lawyer. They were convicted in 2009….

The original sentences called for death by firing squad and crucifixion. However, SPA said on Wednesday that the seven were beheaded. A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said three men with swords carried out the executions.

I guess the Saudis have overcome the shortage of swordsmen.

I guess it’s only bad news for the 7 criminals though really.

Assuming of course they were actually guilty and didn’t have bogus confessions tortured out of them; hard to know over there.

“The original sentences called for death by firing squad and crucifixion.”

Which seems like over-kill to me. But, hey…

In compliance with Sharia Law with which Liberals profess their love and dying devotion, no doubt.

The best hope we have is that the Wahabi’s somehow go the way of the dinosaur. Their culture is unchangeable.

I wonder what the punishment is for crossing the border illegally…

Oh my, haven’t you heard? All cultures are good, none better or worse than the other! COEXIST, dear friend!

Isn’t Wahabi that green hot stuff folks put on Sushi?

I’m not particularly troubled by the sentence. Beheading is a standard form of execution, although the swooshing sword has a certain exotic flair to it. The only remaining question is was the punishment proportional to the crime. I’m in favor of the punishment being sufficiently severe to stop the problem. A hundred years ago horse thieving was stopped by hanging. Now that it is less of a problem it is just a grand theft.

inability to present a defense is the issue I see.

If they’re short of executioners or swordsmen, they could use some of those PetroDollars to send the convicted to vacation in Chicago and putting them up in a south-side by-the-hour motel. Cook County would even clean up after them.

Nah, probably one of the swordsman needed the extra overtime. Got a daughter to get married off, need the cash to buy a dowry. A couple goats, maybe a camel or two.

Saudi swordsman with sense of humor:
