While Bongino’s race against incumbent Democrat Ben Cardin has received brief glances of national attention along the way, he has been the beneficiary of increasing national spotlight in the last couple of weeks. With all the troubles caused by the “situation” in Missouri, it is more important than ever that national Republicans help solid candidates like Bongino
Last month, Bongino received a boost in notoriety when Sarah Palin, speaking at a Ted Cruz rally, referenced a stirring speech he gave to the Frederick, Maryland Republican Club. A speech which was featured here as “the speech that could launch him to victory.”
Yesterday, Palin went one step further and officially endorsed Bongino for U.S. Senate. In a statement released by Palin, she recognized the dramatic distinction between Bongino and Cardin.
Bongino, if you are unfamiliar, was first an NYPD officer, and later, a dedicated Secret Service agent, serving in the Clinton, Bush, and Obama administrations, constantly putting his well-being in harm’s way in order to protect our country’s leaders. In stark contrast, if Cardin is permitted to serve out another term in the Senate, he will have spent over half a century in elected office.
On the race between the two candidates, Sarah Palin said:
This is more than just a race of Republican vs. Democrat or conservative vs. liberal. It’s about taking our country back from the career politicians in both parties who have spent us into debt, nearly taxed us to death, enriched themselves, rewarded their cronies at our expense, and have no vision to help the private sector create the jobs we need to get this economy moving again. They are the reason why Congress’ approval rating is at an all-time low. In supporting Dan Bongino, we are offering Maryland voters a clear choice either to continue with the failed policies and crony capitalism of the permanent political class, or to shake things up with Dan Bongino and cast a vote that helps put our country back on the path to prosperity.
Sarah Palin isn’t the only one who is recognizing Bongino’s very real opportunity at putting a Maryland conservative in the Senate. Appropriately, the Senate Conservatives Fund has also come out in support of Bongino.
There isn’t a candidate in the country who has more passion for conservative principles than Dan Bongino. He’s fearless when it comes to articulating how liberal policies have destroyed inner cities, and he’s unwavering is his support for the principles of freedom that make this country the best the world has ever known.
While this is all great news, such high profile endorsements are far from determinative and Bongino still faces a supremely difficult task in attempting to claim a red seat in deep blue Maryland.
That task however, is not insurmountable. In fact, as Bongino himself pointed out in a recent interview with the Daily Caller, the very fact that he represents a stark contrast from the Maryland status quo may ultimately play a role in why he succeeds in this election where others have failed in the past.
“The folks in Maryland deserve a diversity of political thought.”He added that Maryland’s high taxes are hurting the state’s job growth and driving residents to Virginia and other nearby states.“We have I-95 running right through the state. We have proximity to Washington, D.C. We have Baltimore, we have Annapolis, two great cities. We have the mountains, we have the [Chesapeake] Bay, tourists locations, an educated workforce,” he said.“How Maryland is losing jobs is an absolute absurdity, reflective of a one-party monopoly that is not at all accountable to the people of Maryland anymore.”
