College Republican Activism

College Republican Activism

It’s one of the top news stories across the web: Pay-by-race bake sale still on.

the controversial “Increase Diversity Bake Sale” hosted by the Berkeley College Republicans is still on, the club’s president said, despite “grossly misguided comments” and threats aimed at supporters of the University of California, Berkeley, student group.

During the sale, scheduled for Tuesday, baked goods will be sold to white men for $2, Asian men for $1.50, Latino men for $1, black men for 75 cents and Native American men for 25 cents. All women will get 25 cents off those prices.

The bake sale is meant to draw attention to pending legislation that would allow California universities to consider race, gender, ethnicity and national origin during the admissions process.

This is a pretty popular idea that is tossed around a lot of college Republican clubs. I’ve never been in one that has, but William & Mary, Bucknell, UC Irvine & SMU have all taken part. I like this method – in the next few weeks one of my clubs will do something similar with GPA redistribution.

The year before I came to NYU, the Republican club hosted a “find the illegal immigrant” game in Washington Sq. Park. Hundreds came into protest and counter-prostest the measure. Sarah Chambers, the club president, became famous for being named Keith Olbermann’s ‘Worst Person in the World’  — a badge of honor that I still envy to this day.

I’ll never understand how anybody getting such a great deal on a cake manages to get so bent out of shape. For instance, Black women get the cake for free.
I always get upset when I get stuff for free … NOT !!

… or is it that the Black men are too cheap to pony up $0.25.
It may just be that the Black men see this as a way for the White men to gain favor with the Black women .. that certainly makes the “racism” thing pretty murky.

That may well be. A majority of Black families are single-parent households, where the missing fathers are responsible for breeding multiple children by multiple women, and they are all subsidized through welfare and other redistribution schemes. Unfortunately, others have taken notice of this “play-for-pay” scheme, and a progressive number are following their lead.

I wonder how long civilization will be capable of absorbing these deviant behaviors and remaining civilized.

        This is civilized?

Illegal aliens collecting benefits that I pay for and will never qualify for.

CBC members, all of them sucking money out of my wallet calling me racist (I’m not the member of a race-based organization).

I’m not sure there is going to be a civilization here anytime soon.

In reality, civilization represents a dynamically stable state, which must be maintained. There are many causal factors that lead to progressive corruption of individuals and society. A selective rule of law is the most obvious evidence of corruption.

So, yes, there is civilization, as much as can be expected in a world where people seek instant gratification, and especially when they coerce redistribution through authority. We are all subject and vulnerable to corruptive forces. Then there is a minority of the population who are corrupt and choose to fail.

The root cause of our decline rests with a failure to convey moral knowledge. We cannot for long preserve our optimal liberty, when the conveyance and acceptance of moral knowledge is replaced with totalitarian policies and enforcement. This would suggest that a breakdown in individual and subsequently societal morality is in progress. While these perturbations are always present, they have been amplified through bad policies.

In any case, choose your leaders carefully, and, above all, respect individual dignity. Not everyone is corrupt, and, ostensibly, most people will reject instant gratification in favor of a proper economy.

Am I allowed to hire an “ethnically diverse person” to make discount purchases on my behalf?

Wouldn’t it be really ironic if the NCAACP swooped down on the back sale, bought up everything and then resold it for a tidy profit? Of course, then they would have to pass a resolution condemning themselves as “greedy capitalists.” Oh, well…

I don’t see how it would be any more racist than Sasha and Malia getting preferential admission status over say a white coal miners daughter or a white truck drivers son. Not all whites are rich or advantaged. I know this is hard for some people to grasp, even a fiscally conservative Fox host mentioned something recently along the lines of “When was the last time you saw a blond haired blue eyed guy washing dishes”. It really ticked me off, apparently this snob never leaves NYC. There are plenty of lower income hard working whites in this country, and they are the ones who suffer the most under this kind of discrimination.

Instead of having a price schedule reflecting various races, how about one reflecting various income groups – seeing as how the dumbocrats are also playing the class warfare card these days? Use the type of cell phone a student has as a proxy for how well-off they are, so if a student has the latest iPhone or Droid, then they’d get soaked on the price. On the other hand, students without a cell phone (if such a critter exists) get the stuff for “free.”

Nah – probably still too subtle an illustration for the average college student.

Exactly. As with the rejection of individual dignity, there is no reason whatsoever that a measurement of fairness should not also be selective and progressive.

Following that, we can also reinstitute or, as circumstances dictate, enforce a selective rule of law.

No. Wait. It has been demonstrated since time immemorial that selective treatment, especially when conducted through coercion (e.g., authority), has lead to progressive corruption of individuals and society. It has also been demonstrated time and again that it is not a means, by an stretch of the imagination, to optimally preserve individual dignity.

We should probably rethink this selective enterprise in light of the traditional knowledge which pervades our world and history. It really only serves the interests of a select number of individuals and their supporters.

I predict a black run on this cake sale. In proof, I submit the following: Whenever there is a commercial show (Christmas show, Women’s show, etc.) with free food samples, blacks get in line and make it circular. No one else can get any of this food. They just go round and round all day. Of course, they let their buddies in line but no one else. I’ve seen this happen many times. The hosts can do nothing abut it. With prices like this bake sale, cakes are almost free. We shall see.

In proof, I submit a completely unsubstantiated anecdote about a behavior that I’m the only one who has ever witnessed. Tell me, did these blacks circle in the food queue faster and faster until they turned into butter which was then taken home to mom by, I guess, little white Sambo?

I’m not too far from Bucknell. I vaguely remember reading about the bake sale in our local newspaper. I see from your link that it was shut down.

As an old UC warrior who witnessed the first high-profile Affirmative Action Bake sale back in 2003, I’ve got a lot to say about this. Post coming in the morning.

I think I remember reading the Daily Bruin online that they did this at UCLA, too.

It’s obvious that being Asian is now considered to be overrepresented in the UC system now.

School administrators care more about racial bean counting than education these days.

The L.A. Times’ take:

“Diversity Satire is a Little Too Biting.”
