Oslo Explosion / Update: Shooting Also

Oslo Explosion / Update: Shooting Also

Several readers have e-mailed me with links to the explosion in downtown Oslo, Norway, outside the Prime Minister’s office.

The explosion has all the indications of a car bomb, but reports are too preliminary to say. Rather than speculating, I’ll wait until more is known.

If it is a terrorist attack tied to the Middle East, it certainly would be deep in irony. While Norway is a strong U.S. ally, Norwegian leftist groups have been at the forefront of the anti-Israel movement, anti-Semitism is rising, and even the Norwegian government has moved away from Israel in recent years.

Updates, as they come in:

Fox News confirms with Oslo police that it was a bomb blast.

Reuters also is reporting a shooting at a summer camp which apparently was coordinated, and Fox News is attributing the attacks to al-Qaeda.

I haven’t been able to keep up with all the updates today, Michelle Malkin has more.

[Update: 10:16 ET, 4:16 p.m. Oslo] At least one of the explosions happened near some government buildings, said Walter Gibbs, a journalist with Reuters. He said he saw eight injured people, including two or three with serious wounds and one who looked dead. Reuters reported that the prime minister was safe.

[Update: 10:11 a.m. ET, 4: 11 p.m Oslo] A second blast was heard in central Oslo shortly after an initial explosion rocked the city, a reporter for Norwegian state broadcaster NRK told CNN Friday. Linda Reinholdsen said there was a state of confusion in the city and several government buildings were affected.

[10 a.m. ET, 4 p.m. Oslo] An explosion rocked a part of central Oslo, Norway, on Friday, state TV reported. State TV broadcaster NRK said on its website that windows in several buildings had been blown out and people were in the street bleeding. News reports suggest the government building has been affected.

Just got an email from the Oslo branch of my company, which is near where the explosion happened – everyone in the office is OK but they’re reporting “chaos in the streets.”

Wonder if it’s terrorism or just someone with a grudge against the PM.

Clearly this was an act perpetrated by white Christianist TEA partiers. Damn that Sarah Palin and her hateful hateyness!

Islamists know Norwegians aren’t their friends- the Scandinavian conservatives forthrightly not and leftist degenerates just dupes du jour.

7.19 Police in Norway are also now dealing with a gunman shooting at people in a political youth camp on Utoya Island. Utoya Island is roughly 20 miles north-west of Oslo. Police reports suggest that a man disguised as a police officer began opening fire.

17.28 Sky News is reporting that people are apparently swimming of Utoya Island to try and get to safety.

6-700 youths aged 14-25 attending camp on island of Utøya. Eyewitness on nearby shore reports hearing “many, many, many” gunshots

17.33 People are reportedly phoning from Utoya saying they are benig shot at. Multiple ambulances being sent to the site. The alleged shooter was dressed as a police officer. Europe’s “Maybe they’ll eat us last” approach to the threat modern islam poses to the West was a bad idea from day one. We’ll see more of this stuff, not less.
