It’s not much of a mystery – parents have to step up and be parents. Parents are not their children’s “friend,” best or otherwise: the role is Dad or Mom, not “buddy.” Let the kids know who’s in charge; it’s not the minions, as long as they’ve not attained the age of majority.
Too many people try to organize their family like a democracy, which is a huge mistake. A better way to think about it is “benevolent dictatorship.”
I worked for a manager at one point who was asked by her kids, “Mom, do we live in a democracy?”
Her response was classic (paraphrasing): “No, I live in a democracy. You live in my house.”
So succinct, yet so much truth embedded in there. 🙂
Stop lecturing, giving sermons, and being reasonable with sage advice to your kids. They tune out after word three. Less talk, more action.
