Obama quietly extends combat role in Afghanistan

Shhh!

While we were sleeping, President Obama decided U.S. troops will stay in Afghanistan.

In May, Obama said, “this year, we will bring America’s longest war to a responsible end,” as he discussed his plan to withdraw troops.

Here was his announcement of troop withdrawal given in the Rose Garden in May:

Contrast that with what the New York Times reported Friday (summarized):

President Obama decided in recent weeks to authorize a more expansive mission for the military in Afghanistan in 2015 than originally planned, a move that ensures American troops will have a direct role in fighting in the war-ravaged country for at least another year.

Mr. Obama’s order allows American forces to carry out missions against the Taliban and other militant groups threatening American troops or the Afghan government, a broader mission than the president described to the public earlier this year, according to several administration, military and congressional officials with knowledge of the decision. The new authorization also allows American jets, bombers and drones to support Afghan troops on combat missions….

“We will no longer target belligerents solely because they are members of the Taliban,” the official said. “To the extent that Taliban members directly threaten the United States and coalition forces in Afghanistan or provide direct support to Al Qaeda, however, we will take appropriate measures to keep Americans safe.”

In effect, Mr. Obama’s decision largely extends much of the current American military role for another year. Mr. Obama and his aides were forced to make a decision because the 13-year old mission, Operation Enduring Freedom, is set to end on Dec. 31.

Can you imagine the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth that would follow a move like this, right AFTER an election, by BOOOOOOOOoooooooooosh…???

But Collectivists are nothing if not hypocrites.

Hell No, we won’t go!
Hell No, we won’t go!

Hey, where is everybody?

The real heroes are the troops who, knowing their Commander does not believe in their mission or them, are still willing to go fight as ordered.

Well, this is the natural followup to his recent Gitmo releases. Since he refuses to book any newly captured enemy into Gitmo, the only alternative is to kill ’em on the battlefield.

So in a weird way, Jugears is helping our troops. Never thought I would see the day.

    Wish I could agree.

But what Barracula is doing is putting our troops in an environment MORE concentrated with killers, if anything making the ROE MORE restrictive, and simply exposing them to more death and deprivation. In the end, he’ll squander everything like he did and is doing in Iraq.

We’re leaving. No, we’re staying. Perhaps premature evacuation from Iraq revealed the consequences of a 9-hole strategy.

Might I suggest “The Clash”?
