Obama to veto NIH funding – will liberals who screamed about kids with cancer call him out?
“Research for Lifesaving Cures Act” will be killed. (Update – VIDEO: Harry Reid scoffs at question, “if you can help one child who has cancer, why wouldn’t you do it?)
UPDATE 6;50 p.m. — House approves funding for NIH, 170 Democrats vote Nay. Measure now goes to Senate.
——————————–
The Atlantic ran a story yesterday about kids with cancer allegedly being turned away from National Institutes for Health clinical trials.
The story was vague on the details of whether this meant they didn’t get treatment, or merely could not sign up for the program, but that didn’t matter when it came to the PR war.
The meme of Republicans hurting kids with cancer generated a lot of anti-Republican media, incuding from Justin Barasky, National Press Secretary at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee:
GOP shutdown causing children w/ cancer to be turned away from clinical trials. awful. http://t.co/5nBm0uuWFB
— Justin Barasky (@JustinBarasky) October 2, 2013
And David Bernstein of Boston Magazine:
So I'm clear: House GOP is now asking to keep parks open, treatment for cancer kids closed? For true?
— David S. Bernstein (@dbernstein) October 2, 2013
What they didn’t know, or didn’t care to know, was that Republicans were planning a vote on a funding bill for NIH to be voted on today.
The official name of the Bill is the “Research for Lifesaving Cures Act”.
Obama has announced he will veto it:

Will the people who screamed at Republicans about kids with cancer now call out Obama on the issue?
Apparently not:
@LegInsurrection He's been pretty consistent, all or nothing, right?

Update — and maybe, we’ll see:
https://twitter.com/JHWeissmann/status/385459108586864640
More: Yes, Jordan Weissman did write a new post, The GOP Wants to Restore NIH Funding: Should Obama Allow It?, with this conclusion:
But this is a special case. While funding the government piecemeal is a generally bad idea, we are, in this specific instance, talking about dying men, women, and children, not to mention crucial research that could save lives. Obama has already signed a bill to specially pay for the military. Cancer patients seem no less deserving than soldiers.
Harry Reid is stammering over the issue:
Donations tax deductible
to the full extent allowed by law.

So, pace Berstein, either Obama gets his way or little kids die?
ObamaCare warm-ups for the Death Panels to come?
This is the most blatant display of media partisanship I’ve ever seen.
Ah, you’ve been keeping an eye on the mainstream news too?
This is a winning issue for the Repubs.
They will need to continue passing 1-item funding measures for a while before the media will reluctantly report it.
Of course, they should have been doing this for the last decade or so. I will not explore that thought further… 🙂
Exactly. Death to omnibus legislation. Americans should demand an accountable government with a discernible record.
$2.7 trillion in receipts. Over $1 trillion deficit. Neither a shutdown nor default is justified. Someone is lying. American labor is being exploited and abused.
Obama threatens to withhold granny’s “retirement” and the children’s “lunches”. He did this before in order to force a consensus on Obamacare. History is truly a repetitive process, irrespective of our knowledge.
That said, history is also selective. Past conflicts and controversies fade from memory.
If the government is shut down, why is the President and his family still living in government housing?
I understand they’ve had to furlough 75 of the 90 staff who work in the residence though.
That’s what I call a good start!
Let’s automate the White House with Robots.
I mean they’ve already automated the Presidential position with a O-Bot…so why not….
I flat out do not believe that. This is King Louie XIV we’re talking about.
Is the staff chef necessary government?
I don’t care where you go with this, but it’s ALL show. All the time. And, it’s propaganda from the media midgets. There’s nothing else about this subject on TV.
Yes, it was awarded headline space up a Drudge. Because veterans poured over the “you’re locked out” gate … to visit the WW2 Memorial. All I saw was PHOTO OPS!
And, then, I saw people who had secheduled their trips to DC many months ago. And, those people had the rug pulled out from under their feet.
Just as “O’A Bum’s Care” will repeat on Medicare. To pay for insurance poor people can’t afford. The raid being $600-billion dollars! Oh, yes. Medical progress will be no more. Old people won’t get knee or hip replacements. And, they won’t get cateract surgery. UNLESS they opt to go to Mexico.
Don’t laugh. I’ve discovered that as far back as the 1990’s, there were rip-roaring successful dentists in Tijuana, who spoke English. And had a strong clientele coming in from the United States. (Call it a word-of-mouth business.)
I expect NOTHING from America’s propaganda artists. Some “report it,” and others “pass it.” The front doors to the capital should say “unisex toilet.”) We’ve come a long, long way since our Constitution even counted for points.
It’s too late to ask “how did Obama get away with it?” Because everything you hate about politicians exists in both parties.
If things don’t change? “Mickey Mouse” might get voted into office on write-in votes along. And, then, we’ll be run by Disney.
I’d almost rather have the country run by Disney.
They’re over-priced for what you get, their biggest products are cartoon personalities and dramatic reproductions of original material, and their headquarters are tourist traps located far away from the vast majority of their customers.
IOW, it’s not that much different than the current government, except that you know what you’re getting before you buy it.
Plus they worked out that disability people lgetting preferential lining up rights are F a k e too often.
So Obama and Reid do want some bodies of dead children they can use for propaganda. And if dead children cannot be found, some bodies need to be made.
They have learned from their friends the Palestinians.
Yike.
Had not thought about it that way…but YES.
First the sequester and now the shutdown. Both of which were hatchet jobs. Obama seems intent on injuring as many people as possible. Perhaps that’s how he wins friends.
Obama has shown his contempt for the citizens of this country time and time again. He’s also shown an eager willingness to punish citizens every chance he gets.
H said punish your enemies and make them pay. Now we have confirmation that he meant the American people.
They are trying to make it hurt to the point of putting lives in danger. HR 3210 provides for full funding of the Pentagon including civilian DoD employees; however, this administration has ordered them furloughed. Example, full-time National Guardsmen have been furloughed with a hurricane in the Gulf even though the money for them to work has been appropriated. He wants there to be pain all for political gain. Disgusting!
The current behavior of the Reidobamapelosiosaurus becomes much more understandable when you picture in your mind’s eye the jubilation of the far left as they contemplate unpaid military personnel and closed down monuments to America’s history of imperialistic evil.
I gagged at that update and the immediate bias present in it. Why is funding by “piecemeal” legislation bad? In fact, that is how appropriations is supposed to go. A bill is supposed to have a single subject. I much prefer this to the omnibus bills that have become commonplace on both sides over the last couple of decades. Omnibus bills do nothing but create opportunities for mischief and fraud along with providing unchecked sweeping powers to an increasingly unaccountable bureaucracy.
Further I don’t trust Senator Reid to be acting in good faith regarding his “offer” of picking conferees in exchange for a “clean” short-term CR. I lived through the 80’s and saw many a comprimise to Dems wind up with Dems getting everything they want and telling the Republicans to go pound sand.
The strategy should be the House passing single area bills everyday and forcing the Senate to reject them. Force Dems to have to take an uncomfortable stance for once.
The Constitution does not require an omnibus budget. Art.1 Sec.8 provides that “All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House…”. The reference is to bills, not budgets, implying individual specific pieces of legislation. The GOP House should make this SOP and neither Obama nor Reid can do anything about it. Democrats love omnibus budgets so they can tie defense and essential govt programs to lots of nasty social programs. Time to break the Usual way of doing things and start defunding programs and departments one at a time.
Where is Nellis/Dulles/Ellis/Dallas Airforce Base?
