Hm… Will LI overtake Althouse in July or August?

memomachine in reply to Mogget. | July 17, 2013 at 10:12 am

Probably. Ann Althouse pretty much had an online meltdown of epic proportions just a few days ago that resulted in her closing down comments in an act of desperate cowardice.

She basically started a debate on how men are at fault for everything when the family courts hammer them flat in divorce or custody hearings. Even when the woman in question picked a used condom out of the garbage and used the contents to self-impregnate and thereby force the man to cough up child support. According to Althouse it’s still his fault.

Evidently it’s all a primacy of the uterus so to speak.

Well she caught a huge amount of flack for that and couldn’t stand the heat. And quite frankly her counter-arguments were juvenile at best and hardly worth reading. Having those uterus blinders on is evidently a major obstacle.

Since then I’ve abandoned the site and don’t plan on returning. I’ve got better things to do with my time and I’m sure quite a few others feel similarly.

Browndog in reply to memomachine. | July 17, 2013 at 10:34 am

Actually it stemmed from Instapundit calling her out, then she proceeding to browbeat her readers into agreeing with her.

She does post some interesting and provocative topics for debate.

      Debate no more-

She has always had a measure of contempt for those that don’t “get” what hidden and nuanced message she’s trying to convey.

      Ever the academic elitist.

Mogget in reply to Browndog. | July 17, 2013 at 11:09 am

Ah, I wondered what it was. Well, I used to visit several times daily and hold it open for particularly interesting topics. However, no need to vist more than once a week or so now.

memomachine in reply to Browndog. | July 17, 2013 at 3:50 pm

Well at least she tried to browbeat. Didn’t seem to work very well from my perspective. Well blogs come, blogs go.

raven in reply to memomachine. | July 17, 2013 at 10:47 am

Good summary. She’s also an original creased-pants worshiper.

Not A Member of Any Organized Political in reply to raven. | July 17, 2013 at 11:00 am

Are those “pants suits” such as those the Clinton Library just installed a huge exhibition concerning?

Museums devoted to “pants suits.” Who would have thunk.

Not sure, but I’m guessing the creased pants reference is to David Brooks’ 2008 column in which he wrote that he sat beside Obama once and noticed the crease in his pants. And decided from that crease that not only was Obama going to be president, but he was going to be a good one.

Yes, Mr. Brooks is still employed by the NYT and PBS’s NewsHour.

Insty should mail her a free copy of Helen’s book:

Men on Strike: Why Men Are Boycotting Marriage, Fatherhood, and the American Dream — and Why It Matters, by Dr. Helen …

Might help Althouse understand that men don’t have any reproductive rights.

Browndog in reply to Fen. | July 17, 2013 at 12:44 pm

        In my view…

Althouse was very aware of Instywife’s book, and Insty took the Althouse post as a direct shot at his wife.

        theories…

mariner in reply to Mogget. | July 17, 2013 at 11:26 am

Will LI overtake Althouse in early July, mid-July or late July?

Won’t need to wait for August.

Congrats professor! You earned those page views.

Please, please, please dethrone althouse. She does not deserve the top position with her boneheaded positions and wacky/ insane thought processes, ie: voting for Obama in 2008.

Pablo in reply to heimdall. | July 17, 2013 at 9:56 am

Given that she’s recently melted down on her readership and terminated all discussion, I suspect she’s already done that herself.

kentuckyliz in reply to Pablo. | July 17, 2013 at 6:26 pm

The Althouse Commentariat was worth its weight in gold, and many bloggers would love to have such a commentariat. She just killed off her blog because she is far less interesting without the commentariat. Althouse is dead to me.

kentuckyliz in reply to kentuckyliz. | July 17, 2013 at 6:27 pm

Now it’s sort of like going to a dinner party and one person just thinks her opinions are so fabulous, and she dominates the conversation and doesn’t let anyone else speak. Ugh. Who wants to hang out with losers like that.

I found Legal Insurrection because of the Zimmerman trial.
I was really sick and frustrated at all the bias and manipulation of the facts that I found everywhere else.

I am sure many, like me, found this blog the same way, and that explains the +82.5% increase in page visits.

Now Professor Jacobson has a difficult task in front of him: keep those numbers up.

We all need those numbers to go up. I know there are numb-nuts out there that refuse to learn the truth, but at least those honest enough need an opportunity to see the light.
Remember y’all, this is not about George Zimmerman. This is about each and everyone of us.

Good job, Mr. Jacobson!

Remember to do your shopping on Amazon through the good professor’s link on the right margin of this web page.

    jayjerome66 in reply to Exiliado. | July 17, 2013 at 12:50 pm

Yeah, I found this site thru Andrew’s live tweets. Hope there’s a plan to have him appearing here frequently. And I’m staying (for a while, anyway)even tho I’m an Independent-Centrist, who is turned off by BS from both ends of the spectrum.

Andrew is supposed to be speaking right about now on FM radio:

    Andrew Branca, LOSD ‏@LawSelfDefense 36m

Going on Bruce St. James show, KTAR, 92.3 Phoenix in minutes. #LOSD2

mzk in reply to Exiliado. | July 17, 2013 at 8:18 pm

I found the site when I wanted to check the article on Obamacare in AmSpec (magazine) by the former Lt. Gov. of NY. IIRC, LI had the paper she quoted right there, readable and scrollable. And she was right; it was a “death panel” paper.

So when the Zimmerman trial came, I was right here. And never sorry.

Congrats, Professor. Love your blog and won’t be surprised WHEN you are #1!

Henry Hawkins | July 17, 2013 at 10:07 am

LI is #2 with a bullet. #1 is inevitable. Congratulations!

The good’ol “fastest growing legal blog”.

legacyrepublican | July 17, 2013 at 10:13 am

If I were Obama, I would say …

I can’t believe that I clicked that much. Sorry.

If I were BDLR, I would say …

If only I had clicked that much. Sorry.

If I were George Zimmerman, I would say …

I had to click it that much to get through it all. Thanks.

Most Excellent, Sir William of Cornell.

Is Andrew’s check in the mail?? 🙂

My congratulations to you Professor and to your able contributors.

I’m a long time visitor to the blog. I rely upon its integrity and I always get factual, to-the-point information and opinions presented in a straightforward, easy to understand way even on complex issues.

In addition to the excellent posts I’ve always been impressed with the quality of the comments. It is a rare blog where the comments so often come from visitors who have something to add to the conversation as opposed to those who merely parrot the comments of others. This was/is especially true in the Zimmerman coverage. It speaks well of the quality and character of your visitors and thereby speaks volumes on the quality and character of the blog.

May the coming year be even better for you, the blog, and its visitors.

Amazing! Fantastic news and well-deserved.

I used to read Althouse too, but pretty much discontinued after the no comments rule. You can still email in your comments but it’s like the old pony express… might be a week before they show up, if they show up. I still check her out occasionally but not like I was doing. I missed a week or two and found out in the comments above why she terminated comments. Wow.

Althouse and Insta are both trash. Hope LI reaches #1.

mzk in reply to Quint. | July 17, 2013 at 8:20 pm

Definitely need to disagree about insta, if only because it may be one of the few things we put out that the MSM reads.

The MSM is probably astounded that anyone doubts their narrative.

I’m going to miss the old Althouse. She had a unique thing going on: a liberal blogger who actually believed in free speech (sorry Jeralyn) and intelligent commenters on both the right AND the left. Althouse would toss the Jump Ball and we would fight over it. Debates were very heated but also very interesting and educational, esp the opposing teams POV.

There was always a troll problem, almost always from the Left. I think the Moonbat community couldn’t stand that Althouse was providinig a venue where Right vs Left could debate the latest “cause” with civility. Take away the Left’s sophomoronic slogans and demonization and they have little left to work with. She also pissed off “feminists” like Marcotte and Valenti because she wouldn’t bend over for Clinton and whitewash his sexual predation in the workplace.

I think somewhere along the way Hubris got to her. She forgot (or took for granted) that 1/2 of her success was the back and forth in her commentary. I left long ago because I was weary of her racism (no equal protection, only blacks were protected form of racial slurs) and she dug deeper by hearing “dog whistles” everywhere. I am surprised by what I’ve read about the recent Althouse, read the thread where she baited and insulted men who trusted her good faith rhetoric. Not the Althouse I knew. Too bad.

Aridog in reply to Fen. | July 17, 2013 at 12:03 pm

I agree with your summary as well as Browndog’s and Drill SGT’s viewpoints. However, I’d add another item … the re-arrival [is that a word?] of a few purportedly “conservative” commenters who spent a lot of time denigrating, in vituperative fashion, the Althouse blog, and occasionally Althouse commenters, on their own blogs, or elsewhere. What I found odd as it evolved over the past couple years was that obviously Althouse knew what was happening and essentially did nothing and said nothing. Almost like a publishing death wish.

As for the threads that appear to have brought on the meltdown, those subjects were all “Meh” to me, as I’d said several times before when broached. I guess I don’t care enough about the appropriate subjects. However, I agree … I will miss the old Althouse site and regulars, from whom I actually learned a lot, which was a reason to go there.

Quint, are you kidding? Without Insty there would be no right-wing blogosphere. I can’t think of a better Information Broker. Without Insty, I would still be surfing threads on Free Republic.

Browndog in reply to Fen. | July 17, 2013 at 11:07 am

In a way it’s a good thing–that the conservative blogospehre has been around so long that some forgot/unaware that Instapundit is the “Godfather”.

Baker in reply to Fen. | July 17, 2013 at 12:16 pm

Instapundit is the Drudge Report of the conservative blogosphere with the exception that you can tell what is fluff (mostly entertainment factor) and what is pertinent to you. And you can trust that the link is to something that is reputable on serious issues.

Well deserved. With that kind of growth Legal Insurrection will be #1 next month! WOW – 82.5% Growth is amazing!!!

The Drill SGT | July 17, 2013 at 11:11 am

I was a long time reader and poster on Althouse. No longer, Since before 2008, not sure when I started. I’ve been reading LI for a couple of years now as well. I think Ann was wrong headed in her views on the sexuality (e.g. right and responsibility thread, but I missed the whole thing on vacation). As for getting into a pissing contest with Instapundit, bad for business. I used to view Althouse 10-20 times a day and post 5-10 times. All that traffic driven by active posters is gone along with instapundit pointers. You more than I have a sense of blogger economics (e.g. ads and amazon rebates), but if she was getting significant income, it’s down, way down…

disappointing way to spiral into obscurity…

Hey Drill Sgt! Yup, you and others like Bruce Hayden and Freeman Hunt were the reason I kept logging in 10-20 times a day. Glad you found a new home.

The Drill SGT in reply to Fen. | July 17, 2013 at 12:07 pm

I enjoyed most of the commenters and tried not to attack even the idiots. There was only one that I refused to engage with (starts with an F).

    Anyway, Semper Fi Fen

    Good Luck…

Congratulations, Professor!

Quite the steep curve for page views – where’s my log-log paper?

(Arrived here via InstaPundit, re: Zimmerman trial.)

Ann and Meade must have paid all their bills! I too only occasionally check her blog. The commenters made her blog fun!

Baker in reply to jacksonjay. | July 17, 2013 at 12:03 pm

I was thinking a similar thing about the comment factor. Many people go there to engage in the comments.

Frequently I found her posts so confusing in the nuances or point she was trying to make that I could only figure out what she was talking about by reading the comments. Not the sign of a good blogger.

At least she was OK when she was providing on-the-ground local information during the political turmoil related to the public unions. I could keep up with it better than having it filtered through the national media.

Fen in reply to Baker. | July 17, 2013 at 12:30 pm

Did watch her last vlog and was wondering if she is sick or something, like cancer. She didn’t look well.

And to think I “knew” you when!

Congratulations.

MaggotAtBroadAndWall | July 17, 2013 at 12:08 pm

Rush has mentioned the blog a number of times. Levin has linked to it in tweets (and maybe he has also referred to it on air, but I don’t get a chance to listen to him live). The Media Watch show on Fox News has mentioned Branco’s cartoons a few times, and even did a brief profile of him recently. Bret Baier referenced “Empty Chair Day” on Special Report. Elizabeth Warren’s campaign fed info about Prof J donating to Scott Brown’s campaign to the media, so she or her staff have read it in the past.

Just imagine who reads the blog that we don’t know about.

In case you’re reading, hi President Obama. Please tell Michelle we said hello.

Yay, Professor.

I don’t remember that. Was it after I left? I recall Crack Emcee used to attack her on his own blog, but thats it.

Aridog in reply to Fen. | July 17, 2013 at 2:11 pm

Fen … I wasn’t taking notes, but, yes, I think most of the obvious effrontery took place after you left. I recall periodically someone would cite “Fen’s Law” appropriately and I’d wonder but where is Fen. At any rate, Althouse didn’t almost nothing about it most of the time. I only raised the question once there and there was no interest or response, except the snark of the perpetuated at the time.

I am avoiding names, which is fairly uncustomary for smart mouth me, because I don’t think it is appropriate on Professor Jacobson’s blog or over on Lem’s blog either. None of my business really, so I will simply wait and see what continues and what doesn’t from those still around. Where it continues this time I won’t bother to hang around.

Althouse’s over-consumption of box wine is catching up with her. She looks like hell in her latest vlog. Claims it’s sunburn. Yeah, didn’t W. C. Fields use that excuse, too?

Anyway, she is married to an overweening idiot, they have no friends and have to borrow dogs. It would be very sad if I cared about their well being at all.

I don’t.

Browndog in reply to AYFKM. | July 17, 2013 at 1:22 pm

I respect your right to say that, but I’ll just offer a little push back against getting personal.

AYFKM in reply to Browndog. | July 17, 2013 at 1:45 pm

Whatever, just offering an opinion on what caused her meltdown.

It really is none of my business or concern. That’s between her and her liquor store.

Fen in reply to AYFKM. | July 17, 2013 at 4:45 pm

AYFKM, you’re kind of a little shit aren’t you?

She’s an old friend, we’re criticizing what led to her downfall, you’re attacking her character.

        Please go fuck yourself.

AYFKM in reply to Fen. | July 17, 2013 at 5:09 pm

Sorry, Fen, but two things – you need to choose your friends more wisely and she has changed since you were there.

Keep in mind that due to the fact that you are a guy, she now hates you. To pretend otherwise is foolish.

You should leave defending her to her current boy toy, the groundskeeper/troll.

Nice vocabulary you have there, too.

G Joubert in reply to Browndog. | July 17, 2013 at 3:27 pm

Yeah, but she puts it all “on the record” herself, making it all grist for the mill. Including her predilection for wine consumption. It’s not as if anybody is doxing her.

mzk in reply to AYFKM. | July 17, 2013 at 8:23 pm

Actually, WC did have rosatia (sp?).

AYFKM in reply to mzk. | July 17, 2013 at 8:33 pm

Rosacea. And gin blossoms, AKA Alcohol flush reaction.

But that was W. C., not anyone we were writing about here.

I only come here to see and listen to whichever artist or group the good Prof highlights.
well that and to faithfully cast my vote.
I find the prof and his staff too even handed and informative. When they explain points in a way that I understand
well to borrow Groucho Marx’s philosophy why am I reading a site that can make their point to people like me. 🙂

Wow! Great stats Professor! The surge in your hits and page views is stunning. Bravo!

ShakesheadOften | July 17, 2013 at 3:05 pm

Congrats, Professor! The only downside to this success is it takes forever to read through all the comments now! (and it’s a testament to your audience that the comments are generally well worth reading)

Carol Herman | July 17, 2013 at 3:20 pm

I don’t go to ALthouse. But separate from spending lots of time, here, I’ve been to (JOM) Just One Minute. And, Glenn Reynold’s Instapundit.

Funny how you can jiggle and juggle poll numbers. Fake. But Accurate. I suppose?

Congrats Professor! I used to read Ann’s blog but lately as Dr Sheldon Cooper would say “she’s bat crap crazy”. Ann used to have more common sense but it seems she’s sliding into the progressive side of the aisle. I’m very surprised by the Volokh Conspiracy’s slide in readership, they are a great go to for major cases in the higher courts for understanding the law and what the judges my have been thinking or not thinking with their decisions. I read Hugh Hewitt’s columns that run in Town Hall but surprisingly never new he had a blog. Legal Insurrection has been on my bookmark bar for a very, very long time b/c it’s one of the best blogs I have ever read extremely informative!

Hard work, taking it seriously, and respecting your audience. Good job, professor!

Henry Hawkins | July 17, 2013 at 5:28 pm

In hopes of vaulting LI into first place, I went over with the intent of burning down the Althouse site, but all I did was ruin my monitor.

I need to take things less seriously.

The Drill SGT | July 17, 2013 at 8:41 pm

Folks, It’s appropriate to celebrate the success of our host and wish him more in the future. It is unseemly to launch personal attacks against Ms Althouse for the decisions she has made about running “her” blog or over the top attacks on her directly. It reflects poorly on both you and our host here, since he is the host. Blogging decisions belong to the blogger…

Browndog in reply to The Drill SGT. | July 17, 2013 at 10:02 pm

    Aye.

Initially I was fine with folks venting about Althouse, since she ill-afforded the opportunity.

What I’m not fine with is bringing this blog down in the process.

In fact, not going to let that happen, to the best of my ability…..on my watch.

David R. Graham | July 17, 2013 at 10:02 pm

Congratulations Professor and LI Team!

IP is deafeningly sarcastic and A is peremptorily self-righteous.

I trust the LI Team to be human.
