The New York Times has now mapped all the ways Chicagoans, who arguably have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country and only recently were allowed to possess them, get their guns. The maps and accompanying article are an attempt to spin the massive logic problem Rahm and other gun-banners face: that the war-torn, violence-and-murder-ridden city has banned guns up till recently.
It’s an awkward fact that led Newt Gingrich to suggest that the House hold hearings in this “murder capital of the world.”
But the new line from gun-control advocates is that now it’s the suburbs’ fault (or Mississippi’s, according to one NY Times map). The Times quotes Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel:
Our gun strategy is only as strong as it is comprehensive, and it is constantly being undermined by events and occurrences happening outside the city — gun shows in surrounding counties, weak gun laws in neighboring states like Indiana and the inability to track purchasing…This must change.
And Emanuel adviser David Spielfogel:
Chicago is not an island…We’re only as strong as the weakest gun law in surrounding states.
The NY Times’s mapping project all seem to underscore one fact: that Chicagoans don’t get their guns in Chicago (how could they?). Moreover, the data only comes from guns the Chicago Police Department “recovered between 2001 and March 2012.” So it doesn’t include those possessed by law-abiding, criminal-history-lacking, self-defense-seeking single females such as myself.
(If only the New York Times applied itself as exhaustively to mapping out the chain of events that occurred in Benghazi rather than where gun-shop-lacking Chicagoans buy their guns.)
You can see where this is going. As with the non-stimulating stimulus, they’ll say we need to double down on gun laws in order to prove they work. First the state of Illinois, and then those states that neighbor Illinois, and then….
Rahm’s adviser is right, the Machine-controlled Progressive Paradise of Chicago isn’t just an island. We’ve already sent our community-organizer to the highest office in the land. Our gun policies, our corruption, our hundreds of miles of protected bike lanes, and of course, our deficits, will come to you next.
Don’t lose all hope, as I’ve written about before, there is a revolution sparking in Chicago. And it’s not coming from the Republican establishment but from a group of urban grassroots activists who’ve had enough, embraced the conservative message, and are taking it upon themselves to fight Rahm’s Democratic Machine. It’s no coincidence that two of the most prominent states with the toughest gun laws are also two of the states most deeply affected by the rise of organized crime in the first half of the 20th century and the cooperative political arrangements made between the street criminals and the Democratic party machines: Illinois and New York. As I wrote here, the Democrats — in their big-city manifestations, whence they derive their electoral power — are in effect a criminal organization masquerading as a political party. And, like any gangland racket, they seek to hinder competition by any means necessary.

Gun-control NEVER works, except to INCREASE violent crime.
Like other Collectivist magical thinking, the story is that it only fails because it isn’t draconian ENOUGH.
There are plenty of guns stolen in Chicago burglaries from homes, businesses, and vehicles to account for the murders perpetrated by the same gangsters who stole them.
Did the NYT report that, the number of firearms stolen in Chicago?
If not, why not?

These people are blithering idiots! Do they honestly think gun laws, tough or weak, deter criminals? Anytime a course of action – in this case gun control – is based on a flawed premise that tougher gun laws deter crime, their action will never, ever result in lower crime.

My girlfriend and I live in the Humboldt Park four-flat that I grew up in and own. She’s only been here for a few years, but I’ve lived here in the 30th Ward (25th Chicago Police district) since 1977, and I can tell you, Anne, that if there is indeed a revolution going on in this city I refer to as “Sh*tholistan,” we have yet to see any evidence of it.
In the 35 years I’ve lived in this neighborhood, we’ve gone from a 65% owner-occupancy rate to less than 10%. We’ve gone from being one of the 10 safest police districts in the city to the second “most active.”
Twenty-eight years ago, I graduated from Kelvyn Park HS with a 3.0 GPA and was 45th in my class. Two years ago, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) opened a brand-spanking-new high school across the street from our building. According to an independent CPS accountability website, only 2% (yes, TWO percent) of students attending North-Grand HS are adequately equipped to attend college.
Oh, I forgot to mention that two days after that school opened, four students (Spanish Cobras) were arrested for attempting to shoot two other students (Gangster Disciples).
This city is a festering, seeping boil on the ass of Illinois, itself a state so oblivious to its imminent fiscal destruction, our illustrious governor is now convinced that hiking the minimum wage (already one of the highest in the nation) is the only way to save us all from being flushed down the toilet and into Lake Michigan.
Again, you speak of a revolution in this city, and while I would welcome such with open arms and active participation, I’m afraid I’ve become one of those who are just going to Let It Burn.
They voted for it. They can have it.
Chicago is a perfect example on why progressive/liberal/democrat solutions don’t work regarding violence or any other common negative issue.
Yet, it is this very sector of the government that is preaching their solutions to be imposed on the rest of us.
I’m not a fan of failed methodologies nor am I a fan of pie-in-the-sky solutions.
So don’t ever expect me to register a gun, pledge allegiance to any political party allow myself to be subjected to imperial rule…

Trooper John, criminals are not their target, it is the law abiding citizen that wants to own a gun that is. Their goal is to disarm us and the more dependent on the D party and government in general they can make us, the better for them (ex. the goal of Obamacare). All the while naturally, the Rahms of the world walk around with their 24-hr-7-day-per-week-taxpayer-funed-armed security. Something our darlings in the press like Lynn Sweet (a Chicago media “comfort girl” for D politicians) rarely mentions. I wish, I shared Anne’s hope for the future. This is a case were I would love to be wrong but alas, things are going to be much worse in Illinois and the US before they turn around.
Always happy to help, the Times article will push another favorite Obama mission and begin to destroy suburbs as we know them. Only by tapping the accumulated wealth that has moved out of the liberal-held inner cities can he feed the beast and keep Chicago (and Detroit and Los Angeles) citizens dependent on the machine’s handouts in exchange for votes.
Obama desperately wants to redistribute suburban dollars to the cities, articles like this will give Times-lovers ammunition to propose giant regional authorities which will address the topic of the day, guns.
Then they’ll restrict driving, zone out suburban housing, establish regional police forces under the control of the urban mayors and ‘regional authorities’ who’ll have all this nice new money to save our children, save our schools, build affordable housing and provide a minimum wage to uneducated masses.
Take all this together and it is clear they’re using guns as the ruse of the day to begin the assault on the conservative suburbs by the lefty-liberal cities, courtesy of a friendly supportive President and his press organ, the Times.
Chicago is a low-bottom drunk who insists that his 40 oz bottle of Olde English is really apple cider…while he steals your wallet.
First Chicago insists it needs more restrictive gun laws than the rest of Illinois because the city has special requirements, then it says that the rest of Illinois has to make its gun laws as strict as Chicago’s because it’s the lax laws in those other areas that are causing Chicago’s violence problems.
Lather, rise, repeat.
This ratchet of increasingly strict gun laws only works in one direction. It’s never the disarmed and helpless victims in Chicago encouraging the violent criminals there, and the question of why the gangs wouldn’t just commit their crimes in the less-strict suburbs is never explored. Being a believer in gun control laws takes a very special type of myopic intellectualism.
Instead of strict gun control, Chicago would be a much better place next year if everyone in the core areas were given guns this year.
The worst riots in American history, the ’62 draft riots – 1862, that is – in NYC, went on for days. It was only when the citizens were given muskets and rifles by the militia and told to shoot rioters that the unrest stopped… immediately.
If no one but criminals has has guns, then let’s arm everyone who chooses to be armed. Oh, wait… the violence will stop, but then maybe flushed with success at stopping street crime, the citizens might go after the real criminal element at City Hall.
Hence, the Second Amendment and the institutional criminal element’s attempt to undermine it.

This is what will happen on a national level after the Republicans decide how much of our 2nd Amendment liberty they intend to take away.
Then a few years after enactment, if violent crime goes down (which seems likely given current national trends), then the Democrats will pound their chest and say that if only they had restricted guns even more, the results would have been better. So let’s restrict guns even more. And if violent crime is flat or goes up, then Democrats will say they just didn’t do enough and need to do more.
The only way anti-gun zealots lose is if absolutely no changes happen and violent crime declines. But Republicans will absolutely cave and give them something, which means the anti-gun zealots can’t lose. If anything is done now, no matter how small and no matter how effective, then we’ll be talking about even more gun restrictions about 4 years from now if Democrats win the White House in 2016.

Many of us argue the logic of our positions, and the lack of logic of the positions of the left.
But that is a distraction (by design, by the way), because the left’s ‘logic’ isn’t about the implementation of ideas that will work for the public good. Rather, the left is only interested in control: it matters little if their ideas ‘work’ for the good of everybody, only that they have control.
Their ideas only have to work for the ruling class: in other words, enriching them financially, and satiating the murderous perversions of a few at the very top.
Can anyone here imagine being on the business end of a government gun. whose trigger is controlled by the likes of Valerie Jarrett?
Whatever Rahm says, here’s his problem: the murder rate in all the areas where the guns are made and widely distributed, is still far lower than in Chicago.
If guns caused violent crime, the murder rates would be the other way around.
For the record, I AM in complete support of building a wall around Chicago, complete with minefields, and then declaring it as its own separate country. Whether they like it or not. 🙂 I don’t know how else to protect ourselves against it.
The problem with the youth of Chicago is they have nothing to do and no positive role model.
Perhaps Rahm could begin by teaching ballet classes in the inner city. There are few things that would increase a gang members self esteem more than tights and a tutu. Look what it did for the Mayor.
Ah yes, the old “it’s the suburban gun shop’s fault”. They trotted this line out last summer. The best they could pin on those shops was 10%.
After all it’s much easier to blame an inanimate object sourced from a far away place then to look in the mirror and the effects of 50+ years of progressive policies.
With the court directed CCW bill working it’s way through the state legislature, Tiny Dancer may very well have to put up with some of us packing heat, legally. Even though our legislature is nearly a super majority D, there are quite a few suburban and downstate Ds that would love to stick it to Chicago by instituting a CCW bill that Chicago cannot ignore or home rule against.

This is the way you shut down the silly argument that Chicago has so much gun violence because of guns coming in from the suburbs or other states…Ask the silly person…if that is the problem, why is it that cities in states that have concealed carry laws…have lower crime rates, even though the criminals don’t have to “go to the suburbs, or out of state to get their guns?” Following their logic, the state with the easy access to legal guns should have more gun violence since their criminals don’t have to even travel to get guns…they are right there already…how do you explain that then?
Concurring with BillC, the places where the guns originate, where there are more guns, have fewer gun murders than the places where they are effectively banned. High rates of legal gun ownership correlate to lower rates of gun crime.
If all the guns are coming from surrounding areas, they why don’t those areas have the problems ChiTown has?
