It would be very easy to fall into a depression over Arlen Specter switching political parties, giving Democrats a likely filibuster-proof Senate majority. The result will be that Obama will be able to push through much of his agenda without meaningful debate….
It would be easy to be depressed, until you read this snippet from history, as reported by the Politico:
The last time either party had such a wide Senate margin was during the first two years of Jimmy Carter’s term in 1977-1978, when Democrats under then-Majority Leader Robert Byrd held 61 seats.
What history shows us is that a liberal, blame-America-first Democratic President, urged on by a liberal, blame-America-first Democratic Congress, is a prescription for political self-destruction. Leave Democrats to their own devices, and they will screw themselves politically, just when they are at the height of power….
So I’m not depressed about the long-term future of the country, although the next few years will be tough politically. The Democrats will screw up big time, as they did during the Carter years, and the damage they cause will be generational. But the clean-up is worth looking forward to, even if the mess is not.
Then came 2010. Next comes 2014.

The electorate does care about a good economy after all almost half of the electorate voted for Romney. The losers in this economy care a ton about the economy but there weren’t enough of them to vote for change to give Romney a chance.
Many blacks are suffering in this economy however they still wanted to give Obama more time to fix things. Many hispanics thought Obama was more sympathetic to immigration issues and that seems to be the issue they cared most about.
As for our standing in the world, the vast majority of people are uninformed.

I have noticed that the quality of free stuff is not the same as stuff you pay for. For example, free education k-12 is not the same as private school k-12 education. Will free birth control pills be as good as ones you pay for? In Cuba, free healthcare is good for some but is not good for all.
Some of that free $*** is not unattainable. Cell phones? The Pill? Health insurance for healthy young adults? They voted themselves an economy in which they can’t buy all that and still have some money leftover. It’s actually more expensive to have it free.

But…Jimmy Carter was a 1-termer, followed by Ronald Reagan. And 2010 was followed by 2012.
And as some people say, three days after Romney’s devastating loss, the GOP is already trying to shove yet another moderate RINO down our throats…for 2016, for cryin’ out loud. Doubtless, NRO and American Spectator will immediately start beating his drum. Then we’ll lose, and be here again. If we still have a country.
P.S. The Republicans pretend like they don’t understand about “repeating things to establish inevitability” when they’re running against Democrats, but they sure as hell “get it” when they apply it to the party (and especially the Conservative media) to anoint some RINO hack.

I am not wallowing in anything. However, I disagree with Prof: The world (political or otherwise) is a lot more grim than in ’09, or even during the Carter years, which were pretty damned grim.
The country has been deeply wounded. It is proper to express sorrow for what has happened. It is even more painful to see that most people don’t realize how bad it will get.
At least Arlen Specter has the decency to be dead.

Thank’s for the pep talk Professor but it doesn’t cheer me up because what I’m feeling is not depression….it’s anger and disgust and a great fear for the future of our nation.
The problem that I have with this point of view can be summed up with this single snippet:

Conservatives and Republicans haven’t been able to clean up the damage caused by the Carter and Democrat controlled Legislature from before I was BORN and we’re still dealing with the lunacy created during that time (remember the Community Reinvestment Act).
I have very little confidence that we can undo what was put into place during the 2009-2010 Legislative period once it gets beyond one political cycle. The cement sets, and it becomes almost impossible to roll back programs.
Without a veto-proof majority in the House and Senate (unlikely to happen, EVER) we’re not going to get anything done so long as Obama is President.
And even with a veto-proof majority in the House and Senate, we still have to have enough Repubs with the guts to do what has to be done.
You know what would cheer me up, seeing the Republican party do three things.
1. Treat the media as the enemey, because they are. Every Republican politician/consultant/strategist/PR that appears on news programs needs to go prepared. Prepared for attacks designed to cause gaffes and for misleading edits. Republicans need to stop buddying up with the media during primaries. Republicans need to stop acquiescing to Progressive debate moderators. I mean, that was just totally stupid.
2. Republicans, especially the establishment, need stop treating the Tea Party as the enemy.
3. Republicans need to learn to ATTACK. Constantly defending might win an election or two, but in the long run they will lose more; especially when you look at the culture war that we are in. Constantly defending is precisely where the Alinsky Democrats wants Republicans. Instead of defending when a Democrat (or the media) calls a Republican an evil capitalist, the Republican needs to respond back that the Democrat is pro-slavery. Because that is what the Democrat party is, they want more people dependant on the government so that they will continue to vote Democrat and keep them in power. This is slavery, just replace the item being produced from bales of cotton to votes.
Those three things will make me happy.
In other words, find/channel their inner Newt.

I was told this election was a defining moment for the country. I was told if Obama was re-elected the damage would be irreversible, at least for a generation. I was told that from the Supreme Court, to Obamacare, to our military, to our energy needs, to the very fabric of society that made America the envy of the World, this country could not recover for a generation, if ever–to being the country of our Founders.

Obama gets reelected and then companies announce mass firings and mass layoffs. I find this very upsetting.
Obamacare itself is upsetting on several levels. We still don’t know exactly what it is since it hasn’t been fully implemented and the ambiguities and unconstitutional aspects of it will be fought over in the courts for who knows how long.
I’m sorry, but I do not share the professors optimism. Although it may be true in that eventuality, nonetheless, it’s the people/ the voters who will decide whether or not they like or dislike a person/ the President for whatever circumstance they and their country is in.. and if in this past election, with they current economic, social, political, and military circumstance the way they are, and getting worse by the day.. they still decided that they liked and wanted Obama, and could care less about the economy, the country, the circumstance.. To them, all that mattered was Obama, Obama, Obama, like Hitler, they would rather be devoted to an Obama cult, than be responsible citizens. When that happens, the Republic ceases to properly function as it should, thus ceases to exist.

I cannot be optimist at this moment.
In fact, a little project The Duke has asked me to do is reinforcing it in me. He asked me to make a list on an Excel spreadsheet of all companies making announcements of layoffs due to “current economic conditions”, response to the Obamacare TAX, the War on Coal, Defense and Space budget cuts… in fact, anything that can be pointed directly to the head of The One.
So far, on the AutoSum of my Excel spreadsheet: 14,021, not counting the huge layoffs to come at Boeing, which can turn in the tens of thousands. More to come.
If the Palace Guard Media won’t announce these layoffs to the world, we must.

They will screw up. It’s what they do. They have egos the size of Jupiter and an extremely warped sense of reality.
Carter was limited to one term because the country experienced a lot more palpable hardship on people’s lives.
The gas lines and gas rationing were absolutely brutal. Inflation was ungodly. We bought our first house during the Carter administration when almost no one in the country could afford to buy a “first home.” The interest rate was 21%. Think about how much money that really is.
I would go food shopping and everything had multiple layers of price stickers one on top of the other and each sticker higher than the one beneath it. Prices were increased on a daily basis at the worst of it.
The hostage situation was brutally reported day after day month after month by the media. It was a ceaseless ripping and grinding at the nerves of everyone.
The point is… the country has not yet suffered enough under Obama’s leadership, because the tea party rose up and stopped further crippling legislation with the mid-term election of 2010.
Pragmatically viewed, the GOP retaining control of Congress in 2012 stems a great deal of the pain liberals would otherwise unleash.
The country has been through a lot worse than the last four years in order to overcome liberal control. The great depression is a glaring example.
The Establishment is now “Sex, drugs, rock n roll” and “Peace, love, dope.” Marx, Freud and Darwin are coming for you. Grass skirt fashions and mud huts stacked ten stories high are carbon neutral.
“The Man” is now Malcolm X, William Ayers, Hugh Hefner, Gloria Steinem, The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Margaret Mead, Jack London, George McGovern, John Lennon, Timothy Leary, Alan Ginsberg.

I agree, and want to add to point 3. I truly, and mistakenly, believed the O’s reprehensible war on women would alienate voters. I wanted to believe that but should have known better. My 19 yr old daughter has been sitting through three straight semesters of social and “sexual” justice. In routine, entry level courses the subject of contraceptive and sexual freedoms are either part of the syllabus or discussed off-topic. She is waiting for marriage and let me tell you, she is the exception. These girls (and a lot of their mothers) believed their right to live this lifestyle was threatened by the perceived “loss” of contraceptive/abortion options. O won 53% of women, 60% of 18-29yr olds and 52% of 30-44 yr olds. I do not think we need to abandon social issues but we did not fight this filthy war in fact..we did not even show up.

So many pro-life politicians are kind of squishy pro-lifers and thus cannot talk convincingly about pro-life issues. My impression of Romney is that his version of pro-life would be to leave things as they are and just say he would prefer for women to have their babies and nothing more.

My prediction for 2016
After the failure of Republicans to outflank the democrats on immigration, help raise “revenue”, and begin to praise portions of ObamaCare, the establishment republicans push through the nomination of Chris Christie on his ability to reach across the aisle and work with Democrats along with Rubio because after all a hispanic of sorts.

After the last 4 years and then this election, I’m not depressed I’m numb. As an Independent voter I swore I’d never vote for another Dem, EVER. If the GOP try to run another RINO, especially another Bush, I’m done with them too. Third party is looking pret-ty good right now.
We had better all pray that the Justices of the Supreme Court who are not knee jerk liberal hacks make it through the next four years. The Courts are where neo-Marxist Barack Hussein Obama can do the most damage now.
