Saturday Night Open

Saturday Night Open

Please make more of these sort of arrogant and dismissive speeches.

It helps motivate and bring out the base.  Our base:

Update:  The Eagle has landed, er, pulled into the driveway, and this low blow on Rutherford B. Hayes has him agitated:

The quote cited by Obama does exist on the Internet, but we would expect the White House staff to do better research than that. (This line was in the president’s prepared text, so it was not ad-libbed.) But the trouble is, historians say that there is no evidence Hayes ever said this. Not only that, contrary to Obama’s jab, Hayes was interested in new technology.

According to Ari Hoogenboom, who wrote the definite biography, “Rutherford B. Hayes: Warrior and President,” Hayes entertained Thomas A. Edison at the White House. Edison demonstrated the phonograph for the president. “He was hardly hostile to new inventions,” Hoogenboom said.

Hayes, in fact, was such a technology buff that he installed the first telephone in the White House. A list of telephone subscribers published in the article “The Telephones Comes to Washington,” by Richard T. Loomis, shows that the White House was given the number “1.”

I cannot stand to watch this jerk. He lectures us to be civil and then is astonishingly uncivil himself. He needs to be defeated in November.

Apparently the Rutherford B. Hayes anecdote is such an old story that the arrogant and dismissive Reagan also used it.

    Hate to burst your bubbles.

Ohiogal in reply to Nathan. | March 17, 2012 at 10:39 pm

Nathan, Reagan was a conservative and therefore stupid, so of course he routinely made embarrassing and ignorant gaffes like this. Obama, however, is the smartest man ever to hold office – perhaps the smartest man ever to live – so it’s really noteworthy when he, of all people, sinks to Reagan’s level and makes such a stupid, regrettable statement.

BannedbytheGuardian in reply to Nathan. | March 17, 2012 at 10:59 pm

Nathan -you need to state your case. Quotes & date.

      Then we can judge .

Also sadly – I believe Reagan did have some cognitive /memory issues later in his term . He once referred to a certain lady as Princess David according to attendees at a official dinner.

      But he was never nasty.

      BTW Diana just smiled.

Hope Change in reply to BannedbytheGuardian. | March 18, 2012 at 12:36 am

I looked for the video and Reagan does indeed say, “Princess David” and then instantly correct it to “Princess Diana.” To me, it looked like he was reading from note cards and mis-read.

To me, it seems like this was not an issue of “cognitive impairment.”

        Everyone knows that Ronald Reagan had Alzheimer’s disease at the end of his life. As you know, Reagan’s critics try to imply that he was impaired as president;

I would like to state that I would prefer Reagan, under virtually any circumstances, to the current administration. Reagan loved freedom. Reagan loved America. Reagan loved the American People and often hand-wrote answers to letters he received as president.

If anyone is interested and has not yet read Reagan’s An American Life, I highly recommend it. It starts with a sentence something like that if Reagan had gotten the job he wanted as a youngster in town, he probably never have left. He talks about the Left take-over of the movie unions in Hollywood and their brutal tactics — much like we’re seeing in Wisconsin right now.

Another outstanding book is The Education of Ronald Reagan.

We were so lucky to have Ronald Reagan for our president.

BannedbytheGuardian in reply to Hope Change. | March 18, 2012 at 1:07 am

No I disagree. I think he did have issues but had good people around him. Nobody misreads Princess Diana as David.

If he indeed did need notes , etiquette says he ought to have paused , looked up at The lady & then addressed her. Again he was a good person but this was telling.

No one but no one needed cards to remind them that Diana was in the room.

Apparently the Rutherford B. Hayes anecdote is such an old story that the arrogant and dismissive Reagan also used it. (p)Hate to burst your bubbles.

Get the big things right and the American people will overlook the little things.

Voters forgave Reagan his occasional misspeaking because he clearly was doing a good job as President.

I am not posting the rest of my thought. Civility, you know.

Hope Change in reply to gs. | March 17, 2012 at 11:40 pm

gs, yes, and because when Ronald Reagan was speaking, he said things like, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”

Ronald Reagan is a great man and the great things he did for America and the world are too numerous to count.

Nathan in reply to gs. | March 18, 2012 at 8:43 am

“Get the big things right and the American people will overlook the little things.”

The reality: There was no Internet back then, so Reagan’s story about R. Hayes never made it beyond his speaking audience until a biographer got hold of it.

Other reality: This is a one-day amusing story for the right-wing blogosphere on a slow news day, nothing more. You have to seize on the little things and play small-ball because that’s all you’ve got. Tomorrow or the next day we’ll all be onto whatever the next thing is, from wherever it comes.

We have our fun too….Gail Collins at the NYT works in a mention of Romney’s poor dog Seamus tied to the roof of his car in almost every column, and she’s been doing it for months. Dave Letterman brings up poor Seamus nearly every night on his show, and has been for months. The group, Dogs Against Romney, is determined to make sure that every American knows that Mittens once drove 12 hours with his poor dog on the roof.

But it’s always fun to tweak you with the ‘Reagan did it too’ thing, whenever you folks get all sideways over something Obama did or said. Like when Obama talked about a world without nukes….the wingnut caucus went temporarily insane over that one….and of course, Reagan called for a world without nukes as well….and in the midst of the Cold War, no less.

        Fun, fun…

“Get the big things right and the American people will overlook the little things.”

Since this little thing has a shelf-life in the American mind of about five minutes [inaccurate anecdote about a forgotten president? Who cares? And Reagan did it too(!)]….to the extent that it is even noticed or cared about at all, I’d say Obama must be getting the big things right….by your formula. 😉

jdkchem in reply to Nathan. | March 18, 2012 at 10:58 am

You would have been more honest had you just started talking about contraception. Again.

jdkchem, let’s keep in mind that the Left is trying to distract from Obama’s record. The preferred method is to draw from their large and growing collection of victim cards, but they’ll also resort to ploys like You do it too.

Whether or not we choose to respond is a case-by-case decision, but we should never accept such gambits at face value.

Nathan in reply to Nathan. | March 18, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Proof is in the pudding. Anybody talking about Rutherford B. Hayes today? No? Not even your right-wing talkers whose job is to take small things and try to blow them up into big things. Like I said, a five-minute story.

          Always nice to be right.

In the meantime, Pope Santorum has dropped the big ‘C’ word on Romney….Character. And over the dog-on-roof Seamus story, no less.

          Thanks, Ricky.

I completely empathize with Rick and Joanne, but if we show anger they’ll play the race card and other victim cards, and supersmart people like Katie Couric will deride our stupidity to independent voters.

Before McCain flipped out and blew the 2008 election, he briefly took the lead. The campaign materials were laughing at Obama.

The right antidote to Obama’s jive is laughter, dismissive laughter, dismissive like the guy is not worth the energy of being nasty.

The conservative blogosphere is having a field day satirizing the Rutherford B. Hayes gaffe, e.g. The teleprompter is a great invention, but who would ever want to use one? That’s the right tone.

The antidote, and the only antidote, that restores our liberties, is to defeat Obama decisively this fall and then repeal his government and then restore our Constitutional Republic.

How we can do this is more clear by the day. See: Newt’s Schaumburg/Rosemont speech. ElectAd – scroll to
ROSEMONT – March 14, 2012
http://electad.com/topics/newt-gingrich-speeches/

American Energy Now, the new abundant oil, the oil royalties of $16 to $18 TRILLIOIN over the next generation, keeping the $500 Billion at home every year instead of paying it to the Middle East — that is just one paradigm in which we respond to the new world that is coming into being through technology.

We’ve got to get the government out of our way. The government is keeping the brilliance of the people from using the free marketplace to produce new ideas and new products and processes. Newt understands this. Newt had plans for how we’re going to get the government out of the way of the people.

Newt is talking about all they ways we can RENEW America. Bring manufacturing home. Have an entrepreneur-based space program. Make tax rates low and through creating jobs, still have tax revenues relatively high.

The sound quality is not good. But the content is something we can use to transform our country for a dramatically better future. If you haven’t check out Newt yet, find out for yourself.

Uncle Samuel in reply to Hope Change. | March 18, 2012 at 9:26 am

Speaking of renewing America – there is some evidence that our oil reserves are actually self-renewing and the whole line about ‘fossil fuels’ being depleted’ may be another liberal hoax….

      http://www.americanthinker.com/2012/03/what_if_oil_and_natural_gas_are_renewable_resources.html

The thought that came to me after watching The Undefeated, the real Sarah Palin story, is that the RINOs and other national and global Powers That Be (PTB) wanted her out of the Governorship of Alaska.

The RNC never intended to win the 2008 election. Most likely, the world global crisis was as fake/man-made/augmented as Dolly Parton’s bustline…a theatrical global drama, created to allow the PTB to shift/grab power and money.

Nominating Palin as VP killed two birds with one stone. In Alaska, she was a danger to the PTB, because she cleaned up/exposed the oil/energy scam the politicians and oil industry cabal had going on in Alaska…and in the US… and globally.

Newt and Palin have been challenging the PTB. Oh, I hope they have a plan, can succeed, expose the corruption and reform the system/s.

I have always enjoyed studying the history of ancient Rome. Currently I am reading a book, written around the turn of the last century by Jacob Abbott about Nero (available for free for your Kindle).

Obama, given absolute power and few restraints, would have fit right in with the first century Roman emperors.

He’s such an ass.

The audience didn’t look terribly enthused… until he started paraphrasing lines from Gingrich at the end!

I have no or very few problems with alternative energy sources such twirly turbines, solar, biofuels etc.

I do have a big problem with taxpayer funded alternative energy subsidy and market rigging democrats, that crony capitalist kickback economy…
“When special interests put their thumb on the scale, and distort the free market, the people who compete by the rules come in last.”

I do love gas guzzling cars, trucks, SUV’s and freedom of choice.
We need to expand oil demand along with increasing supply in efforts to bring down the cost.

I have to give credit to the crowd for forcing themselves to politely laugh, but one can feel the underlying insincerity in the laughter. I’m sure most of them would not want to be seen on camera laughing at such inane attempts at humor.

Man, there’s a lot of “they”s in that speech. He is the master of the strawman. Anti-Obamas should dress as strawmen and appear wherever Obama appears publicly. Carry signs saying “We are the They”. Anything to throw Obama off his message – imagine how incoherent he would become if he saw real “strawmen” out in the crowd hooting everytime he says “They”.

Browndog in reply to alan markus. | March 17, 2012 at 7:50 pm

    Disagree.

As Mark Levin points out, he loves making these type of speeches, “major policy” speeches, in front of ‘kids’.

The audience is 18 & 19 yr. olds, and have no idea who Rutherford B. Hayes is..

No idea what he says are blatant lies-

They don’t care, and he knows it-

All they know;all he knows, is that he sounds “cool”…and “smart”.

Let me know the next time Obama gives a speech in front of adults not affiliated with a union.

They look confused and bewildered because Obama is conflating notions that The US Government are equal to private sector innovators and job creators.
The private sector creates wealth the gubmint destroys it.

Hope Change in reply to Valerie. | March 17, 2012 at 10:28 pm

Hi Valerie – that American Energy Now talk is capturing people’s imaginations. Newt now has something like 176,000 donors. I think he’s gaining a thousand new donors every few days.

I think that when people find out that we can have reasonably priced gasoline; be free to buy the car we want, not the one Obama wants; buy gas from our our country’s suppliers and keep the $500 Billion a year we currently send to the Middle East; pay off the national debt with the some $16 to $18 TRILLION in oil royalties over the next generation and give our children a debt-free country, Newt gets their attention.

Add in that landowner, farmers also get royalties, as does the state, and you can see that this creates many, many jobs and all kinds of prosperity for a long time to come.

And the data for North Dakota is already being updated — they now say that they have 160 times as much oil in North Dakota alone than the U.S. Geological Survey thought they had just some eight years ago. North DAkota has 2% or 3% unemployment. They have some 16,000 jobs unfilled because they lack the workers with the needed skills. The have billions in a rainy-day fund and have had multiple (5?) tax decreases for the people of North Dakota.

Also, if we produce oil for ourselves, we don’t have to be in this precarious position with the Middle East, in which we are beholden to them and have to worry about the Iranians closing the Straits of Hormuz. Also, kowtowing to the Saudis, who pay for teachers of terror all around the world. And as Newt says, the U.S. has never stood up to them because we are dependent on foreign oil. BUT NO MORE. So this also solves national security issues.

Thanks, Valerie, so much for the link. Newt’s plans will create a dramatically better future.
Let’s rebuild the country we love.

BannedbytheGuardian in reply to Hope Change. | March 17, 2012 at 11:47 pm

Canada is the largest supplier of gas to USA.

Are you saying none from them ?

Ok they will sell to China.

BTW earning foreign currency above imports is the only way to drive down govt debt.

And then further the Feds have to get hold of some of that $$$.through taxation/levy.

USA in itself cannot repay the debt by internal consumption.

      That has maxed out surely.

Hope Change in reply to BannedbytheGuardian. | March 19, 2012 at 12:21 am

        BannedbytheGuardian — Wow.

With all due respect, your comment has no bearing on Newt’s proposals.

The reason I post links to Newt’s speeches is because I hope people will listen and find out the facts.

There is nothing I have ever heard Newt say about not getting natural gas from Canada. I don’t know what you mean by that.

As for oil from Canada, Newt will sign an Executive order on Inauguration Day approving the Keystone Pipeline. You would know that if you had listened to even one speech in the past two weeks.

They are available on ElectAd – http://electad.com/topics/newt-gingrich-speeches/

Newt says in his speeches that Obama could lower gas prices right now by approving the Keystone Pipeline with a presidential signature. Newt says it is insane to refuse Canada and then have Canada make a deal with China for oil that could come to the United States.

So Canadian oil in the Keystone pipeline through the United States and refined in Houston is definitely part of Newt’s plan.

Your statement about how a nation pays off its debt may be valid if the economy doesn’t grow or if no new resources enter the picture. But here, we’re talking about the ability to extract billions of barrels of oil where until recently, we though we had maybe a few million.

The paying off of the national debt would happen if we drill in Alaska and other states which have enormous oil deposits, and then landowners, states and the federal government would be paid royalties.

The guys who are developing North Dakota oil estimate that royalties to the federal government will be between $16 to $18 TRILLION over the course of the next generation. If we used spending discipline, which as Speaker Newt did, we can pay that money to China and give our children a country free of debt.

North Dakota has unemployment around 3.5% and around 16,000 jobs unfilled because the unemployed don’t have the needed skills. North Dakota has billions in a rainy-day fund and their operating budget is only a few billion a year. North Dakota has give something like 5 or 7 tax breaks to its people in recent years because the state has so much money.

I don’t know what you mean about getting foreign currency. That seems irrelevant. Ditto repay by internal consumption.

The feds will get their hands on the money to repay the debt through oil royalties. Because the United States has more oil reserves than any other country in the world, including the nations of the MIddle East. And we are going to develop our reserves, and we are going to refine the oil and we are going to have affordable gasoline.

And we are going to pay off the national debt.

The United States can have a dramatically better future and it is a matter of deciding we’re going to team up and make the government act on the will of the American People.

VetHusbandFather | March 17, 2012 at 8:46 pm

So Columbus was an innovator trying to find a new continent or prove the world was round? And his voyages were entirely for scientific study, they didn’t have anything to do with money did they? Good thing there weren’t any naysayers to tell him that he didn’t discover a new continent… like say, him.

I personally hope he dusts off the old “sippin on a Slurpee” speech and trots it out closer to the election. That little gem worked like a charm for us in 2010.

Looks to me as though Obama has succeeded in firing up the Catholic Bishops here in Bitterclingerville PA. Every Bishop in the state signed a letter that was mandated to be read at all masses. I went to a 5:30 mass and found the letter quite interesting. Here is an excerpt:

This same mandate also, alarmingly, purports to tell churches what type of activities the government thinks are religious. Catholic schools, hospitals, nursing homes and Catholic charities do not qualify for a religious exemption. Why? Because they serve non-Catholics. Under the government’s view, Jesus and his disciples would have been deemed not religious enough. We have entered dangerous territory – the government is defining religion and limiting its practice. This is an unprecedented and gross infringement on our religious freedom. We did not pick this fight, but neither will we run from it.”

When the Bishops break out the sarcasm – woah – maybe Obama should have thought long and hard about picking that fight. There are quite a few Sundays between now and November – just sayin… In the mean time 3,000,000 Catholics in PA are being asked to fast and pray March 30 for the preservation of religious liberty. I am hoping that the effort gets a little media attention. A Lenten miracle perhaps?

OcTEApi in reply to Mary Sue. | March 17, 2012 at 11:41 pm

“Why? Because they serve non-Catholics. Under the government’s view, Jesus and his disciples would have been deemed not religious enough. We have entered dangerous territory…”

I’ll say, a major tenet of Christianity is proselytizing to non-Catholics.

“There, but for the grace of God, go I”
God’s grace, and his/her upbringing have played a role in their success in life.

BannedbytheGuardian in reply to OcTEApi. | March 18, 2012 at 12:01 am

      I don’t understand your point.

Whether you are a Catholic institution such as a college, nursing home, private charity or even an individual it is a major tenet of Christianity to proselytize, witness, testify the lords good word, or the positive influence that Christian beliefs, principles and values has served you … Tebowing is proselytizing to non-Catholics.

For the Obama Administration to say these institutions “do not qualify for a religious exemption. Why? Because they serve non-Catholics” is absurd because that’s the whole point.

The Wright brothers and Steve Jobs worked WITH good science and the rational world.

They did not rely on moonpony engineering and the force of compulsion to try to MAKE things work that cannot.

Solar and wind “power” did not carry that putz to his speech. Real applied engineering and fossil fuels did. He wants them, and he wants to deny them to us.

I’m somewhat reminded of a line from Heinlein’s “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress”, wherein the narrator is speaking to a ChiCom leader about overcoming certain technological and engineering hurdles.

The aparatchik states, in much the same way he might propose to a have a light-bulb changed, that they can have men re-educated until they produce the desired results:

“Weather I know nothing about, Doctor, and all I know about ice is that it has a heat of crystallization of three hundred thirty-five million joules per tonne. I have no idea how many tonnes would have to be melted to clear the site, or how much energy would be required to keep it clear, but it seems to me that it might take as large a reactor to keep it free of ice as to power the catapult.”
“We can build reactors, we can melt ice. Or engineers can be sent north for re-education until they do understand ice.” Dr. Chan smiled and I shivered.

And we can all be told bird-choppers and dream-catchers will solve our energy needs until they do, as well.
