Captain Carroll “Lex” Lefon, USN (ret), of Neptunus Lex blog, passed away on March 6:

Carroll “Lex” LeFon, ATAC F-21 pilot, retired Naval Aviator, TOPGUN Graduate and prominent military blogger known as Neptunus Lex, was killed in a plane crash on the morning of March 6th, 2012 when his F-21 Kfir crashed at Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada; he was 51.  Although the investigation is on-going, there is no question that erratic and severe un-forecast weather changes contributed greatly to the accident.

Lex is survived by his wife and three children.  The Secretary of the Navy issued the following statement:

I mourn the passing of a great naval aviator, a professional analyst of all things naval, and a soulful and compelling writer of poetry and prose.

Ray Mabus, SecNav

His funeral is today.  From the announcement at his blog:

Captain Carroll “Lex” Lefon, USN (ret) will be interred at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, CA. The funeral will be at the Fort Rosencrans chapel on March 27th at 1:00pm.  The “Mighty Shrikes” of VFA-94, the squadron that Lex commanded, will conduct a fly-over.

The family has graciously invited Lex’s many friends and fans here at Neptunus Lex to attend.  Their only request is that you consider carpooling due to limited parking at Fort Rosencrans.

Lex’s former employer, ATAC, is coordinating a charity that will be accepting donations in lieu of flowers.  When details about charities and scholarship funds become available, they will be posted on Neptunus Lex.  ATAC’s latest press release can be found here.

Condolences can be mailed to: 3525 Del Mar Heights Road #605 San Diego, CA 92130-2122

I enjoyed Lex’s blog, and we linked to each other from time to time.

With the loss of Lex, Gina Cobb and Andrew Breitbart, we have lost three important blogospheric voices in the past three months.

I seem to recall an interesting history on the development.

Godspeed, Lex.

And Cathy Seipp, gone five years already.

Shifting to ‘the sunnier side of doubt’, I hope they are all living fuller lives than our limited senses and minds can imagine.

Images of top flight teams such as this and The Thunderbirds always cause me to well up with tears.

The pilots take their jobs seriously and care about the freedom of Americans.

May God Bless his family and Lex rest in peace in the big naval airspace in the sky.

My heartfelt condolences to his wife and children. May they find solace in pride and fond memories.

Have been following Lex for many years not quite from the beginning, but pretty close. He was always a multiple stop during the day for me.

Will miss his point of view. Was hoping SNO would start telling his Tales of the Sea, now that he has his wings.

If any of you are looking for good stories to read about Navy life, read his Rhythms Stories. http://www.neptunuslex.com/rhythms-the-compendium/

God Bless the Lefon family today!

Lex had a superb blog. His ‘Rhythms’ postings (a novella published in multiple parts on his blog) was a marvelous rendering of daily life on a carrier.

Lex also appeared to be a pretty humble guy, except when he was in the cockpit, when there was no one better than him in the sky (an attitude fighter pilots have to have).

My deepest condolences to his family. Lex was quite a guy, and we need more like him.
