The U.S. Secretary of Defense said Monday night that Iran will not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. In an interview, Leon Panetta, said despite the efforts to disrupt the Iranian nuclear program, the Iranians have reached a point where they can assemble a bomb in a year or potentially less.

The only way I see Iran being stopped in their quest for a nuclear weapon is if Israel does it. The current leadership of the USA doesn’t have the stomach for this fight.
Except, I believe, Obama will use force anytime he thinks it will help his reelection chances. He has the stomach for that.
I would agree with that. For Obama, foreign policy is just a political tool. He’ll do whatever gives him the best reelection chances, not what is best for the nation.

The October 2012 surprise, from the looks of things, may happen a lot earlier…when Obama has to send troops back into Iraq.
It is not so much a question of Iran getting nukes as it is who will get an Iranian nuke.
Obama is stuck here. Normally, he replaces one totalitarian regime with an Islamic regime that is even worse.
The problem is that he can’t find anyone worse than the current regime in Iran…

Any October Surprise raid on Iran just in time for the election would anger his base and half the independents and fail to move moderate or conservative Republicans. It is difficult to see how it could be done without the assistance of the Israelis. It is more difficult to see Bibi helping out his good friend Barack Obama get reelected unless there was the highly doubtful coincidence of a well designed, best timed operation involving US and Israeli assets juuuust before the 2012 election.
No, Obama will stand pat, let Israel make the strike, support it, wait to see if it is successful, and if so, take full credit for it. He’ll be beholden to Israel on the timing of it.

I don’t see a strike against Iran helping Obama politically. The peaceniks in his party would stay home, and Obama HAS to get his base to turn out in very high numbers this year.
It’s the same reason he’s not making a decision on the pipeline. He cannot afford to anger the environmentalist division of his base, either.
I think it’s Israel or no one. However, if Israel does strike successfully, I expect Obama to try and share the limelight.

Pure posturing. Obama could take an affirmative decision to prevent Iran from getting it’s hands on our stealth drone. What makes anyone think he will commit U.S. forces to stopping Iran? Perhaps Dear Leader believes he can bow to President Ama-dinner-jacket and gain his cooperation in that way? Only the boy-king knows for sure.
