NY Times review: Yeah, Joe McGinniss is a sleaze

NY Times review: Yeah, Joe McGinniss is a sleaze

Yesterday The National Enquirer and the blog equivalents (Wonkette, Gawker, TBogg) ran two hot button headlines about Sarah Palin based on a preview of a book written by creepy stalker Joe McGinniss.  You know the allegations, so it’s not worth repeating (see Robert Stacy McCain’s take on the race-baiting).

See also a report at Say Anything about McGinniss’s sleazy tactics used to try to falsely paint Palin’s father as a defender of pedophiles based on an incident that took place decades ago.

So when I saw on Memeorandum that The NY Times had written a review, I thought, oh boy, here we go.  But the review totally skewers McGinniss, and reveals him to be the creepy stalker we all thought he was:

Mr. McGinnis, who has been writing best sellers since “The Selling of the President” in 1969, starts this book by affecting a gee-whiz attitude about his amazing new digs. (“Forty years in the business and I’ve never had a piece of luck like this.”) But he doesn’t get far with that attitude. Ten pages into “The Rogue” he has already blown his cover, printing a map to the Palins’ isolated house. He describes having gone to the Palin door with a signed copy of his book about Alaska, “Going to Extremes,” and exploiting this encounter to engage the family’s older son, Track, in conversation. But had Mr. McGinniss been a good neighbor, he would have delivered that book without showing up unannounced.

The NY Times review has even harsher words for McGinniss’s two hot button allegations:

Although most of “The Rogue” is dated, petty and easily available to anyone with Internet access, Mr. McGinniss used his time in Alaska to chase caustic, unsubstantiated gossip about the Palins, often from unnamed sources like “one resident” and “a friend.”

And these stories need not be consistent. “The Rogue” suggests that Todd Palin and the young Sarah Heath took drugs. It also says that she lacked boyfriends and was a racist. And it includes this: “A friend says, ‘Sarah and her sisters had a fetish for black guys for a while.’  ” Mr. McGinniss did in 2011 make a phone call to the former N.B.A. basketball player Glen Rice, who is black, and prompted him to acknowledge having fond memories of Sarah Heath. While Mr. Rice avoids specifics and uses the words “respectful” and “a sweetheart,” Mr. McGinniss eggs him on with the kind of flagrantly leading question he seems to have habitually asked. In Mr. Rice’s case: “So you never had the feeling she felt bad about having sex with a black guy?”

If even The NY Times is disgusted with Joe McGinniss, then Palin will emerge stronger from this book.

More to come, I’m sure.

Update:  The NY Times, in a separate article, has some background on McGinnis:

Mr. McGinniss won wide acclaim for writing about politics with his first book, “The Selling of the President 1968.” But his later career as an author of mostly true-crime books has featured a series of controversies. Jeffrey MacDonald, an army doctor accused of murder who had cooperated with Mr. McGinniss for a book about the trial, accused him of dishonestly coercing him and later betraying him in the book. He was accused of plagiarism after his 1993 book about Senator Edward M. Kennedy, “The Last Brother.”

And this interview on NBC reveals McGinnis to be every bit as creepy as the NY Times book review suggests:

I would suggest that The Creepy Stalker doesn’t plan on retiring on the revenues he gains from this book. Actually, he should think about getting a job at McDonald have some income.

Americans are getting tired of the smear merchants. Perhaps the practice of shunning should be reinstated.

Here is blog posting about rumor-spreading, and some push-back, on real news vs. spreading gossip at the Miami Herald. Apparently Glen Rice lives in the Miami area, but the Herald didn’t even attempt to contact him before printing the rumor about him and Palin – back in 1987. Here is the link.

Interesting letters – the original and the responses.

I agree with your conclusion. Sarah Palin will emerge stronger after this latest character attack. The left doesn’t see how their attempts to take her down make her more appealing to most people. Good for her!

Maybe they’re just mad he was stepping on their turf.

Chuck Heath – oh Heck, the entire Palin clan! – should hire a jugular-biting attorney on this slime-ball…

Falsely accusing someone of using drugs or sexual encounters or anything like that can be ignored or dismissed. But, to call someone a “pedophile-enabler”, and then printing a map to the Palins’ home in that book?

Not only is this man implying that one family member is a “perv friend”, but he also is allowing for the next Jared Loughner to find his way to massacre this family, easily.

That is totally unacceptable.

per Robert Stacy McCain

“A source who doesn’t need to hide behind a cloak of anonymity:

“This is a man who has been relentlessly stalking my family to the point of moving in right next door to us to harass us and spy on us to satisfy his creepy obsession with my wife. His book is full of disgusting lies, innuendo, and smears. Even The New York Times called this book ‘dated, petty,’ and [said] that it ‘chases caustic, unsubstantiated gossip.’”
– Todd Palin

During my trip to Wasilla last year, I told Todd Palin that if he had shot Levi Johnston, no jury in the world would have convicted him, and his wife’s poll numbers would have gone up.

Our conversation was informal and off-the-record, so readers are left to imagine Todd’s reaction, but certainly the Palins can’t be held responsible for every crazy thing a journalist says. (It was, after all, merely a hypothetical.) And neither can the Palins be blamed for what I’m suggesting now.

Joe McGinniss deserves The Mother of All Ass-Whuppings, and Todd Palin ought to give him exactly what he deserves.

So I’m asking readers to go make a $25 donation to SarahPAC to help defray Todd’s legal expenses when he shows up at McGinniss’s first book signing and pounds that scurvy worm into a bloody pulp.

Please give $25 to SarahPAC, so that we can bail Todd Palin out on that assault charge — and then fly him to the next Joe McGinniss book signing to deliver yet another brutal ass-whupping.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Just give $25 to SarahPAC, you see, and we’ll cover Todd Palin’s legal expenses and fly him to wherever Joe McGinniss appears in public, turning McGinniss’s book tour into a nationwide beatdown tour.

After McGinniss gets out of the hospital from his first ass-whupping, he’ll probably get a restraining order against Todd. Still, Random House will be forced to hire armed security to protect Creepy Joe because, hey, what’s a restraining order to an insulted husband who’s got thousands of loyal supporters donating $25 each to cover his legal expenses?

Bonus suggestion: Sarah PAC should hire a documentary crew to chronicle Todd Palin’s “One Nation Joe McGinniss Ass-Whupping Tour.”

Proceeds from sales of the DVD would go to defray Joe McGinniss’s medical bills. “Compassionate conservatism” and all that.

There are times when the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Times . . . but not the NY Times.

It really wasn’t that long ago that the New York Times posted an appeal on their website, openly soliciting the assistance of any and every sleaze merchant in the world with access to a computer, to please help them dig up dirt about Sarah by reading through the sizable trove of just-released emails from Sarah Palin’s tenure as Governor of Alaska, which trove the NY Times, among others, had posted on line to assist said sleaze merchants.

Apparently the guy that Creepy Stalker McGinniss claims had an affair with Palin has also slammed the “book”. Seriously, do these people have nothing better to do?

Naa, a far better reward for this slime is to simply ignore him and mock him as his fantasy novel slides down the Amazon ranks into obscurity. Any threats of violence would just give him a few thousand dollars worth of positive publicity and contribute to his persecution complex.

Looks to me like there’s an opening for some aspiring writer to set up shop in Mr. McGinniss’ neighborhood.

I’m pretty sure he or she could find a lot of ‘friends’ and ‘residents’ who’d be willing to make up a lot of crap share some stories about his past.

Just donated to the Todd Palin Defense Fund here: http://bit.ly/qzWnqH Via @rsmccain

Wow — it’s great to see Todd Palin speaking up and speaking out about this two bit jerk. Some great quotes in the NBC (NBC?? sic; go figger) video.

Another Michael Moore wannabe, except for the fat part.

Lucy Jordan realized at 38 that she would never drive through Paris in a sports car with the wind in her hair.

Now middle aged women everywhere will realize they never slept with a 6’8″ black basketballer either.

Nor sniffed a line of cocaine whilst snowmobiling.

Nor get to meet their aborted children & look after their non existent grandchildren.

Not sure what the men’s problem is ( no basketball career / no Iron Dog trophies?) but I read 1600 mostly vicious jealous attacks recently in the DesMonies Caucus blog freaking out about her Storm Lake half marathon. A friggin run done in good speed is now a political crime.

Have you ever wondered how and why, anyone, who is a vile disgusting hate mongering racist bigoted Anti-American liberal, writes and says, hate filled propagandist lies.. against someone who is not those very things, that he actually really is.. it is just amazing.. words are not even enough to describe people like him..

The term “OxyMoron”, doesn’t even come close to explaining him..
