Don’t bring a pistol to an AR-15 fight
A North Carolina homeowner fought back an armed home invasion attempt yesterday after a man kicked in his front door in broad daylight.
From WTVD-Raleigh News:
It happened about 9:45 a.m. as the homeowner, Jonathan Haith, was sleeping in his home in the 2200 block of Thomas Lane.
“Somebody was you know knocking on the door at 9:15, 9:30 in the morning,” said Haith. “I wanted to roll over and stay in the air conditioning, and I just ignored it.”
When the door knocks lasting 15 minutes were followed by a boom and a thud, Haith grabbed his AR-15 semi-automatic from under his bed and slowly crept into the hallway.
“I peeked around the corner, saw a tall, slender black gentleman standing over me with a pistol,” said Haith.
When the intruder shot at Haith with a 9mm and missed, he fired back. The bullet pierced the suspect’s stomach and shoulder.
“That was my round,” said Haith. “Evidently, it went through his body and struck the wall.”
Pandemonium followed, and the intruder scurried out. An apparent getaway vehicle spun out of Haith’s yard to pick up the intruder, who had collapsed outside of a day care up the street.
By that time, Haith had dialed 911.
“Once-in-a-lifetime incident that I hope doesn’t happen again,” said Haith.
The Vance County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t officially released any details of the incident.
According to Haith, both the driver and the shooter were taken into custody. He says the intruder who he shot was last listed in critical condition at the hospital.
Haith said nothing was stolen from his home.

AR-15 semi-automatic: In Andrew Branca’s home state, despite the homewowner’s successful self-defense, this wouldn’t be a very good thing to own.
We have AR-15s in Massachusetts.
Whether or not they’re very good is another question.
Massachusetts has a long history of prosecuting homeowners who defend themselves.

Not happy enough. Since Mr. Haith’s shot wasn’t lethal, we now have to spend thousands upon thousands for the scumbag’s medical care and the ensuing criminal justice procedures.

The whole story is that a POS criminal got what he deserved.
Here’s the story you seem to have missed – ARMED ghetto scumbag kicks in door of homeowner for home invasion/robbery after knocking for 15+ minutes to make sure nobody was home. Oops! ARMED homeowner takes offense to ghetto rat firing his 9mm when he’s surprised by homeowner. Homeowner fires back with AR 15 and unfortunately doesn’t quite kill ghetto rat who then stumbles around neighborhood advertising his stupidity, then takes off with wheel-man homie. They’re caught a short distance away by cops who’d been called by homeowner.
The sad ending to this otherwise wonderful story is that, thus far, the ghetto rat has not expired (and probably won’t since he’s lasted this long now) and will cost the taxpayers thousands upon thousands to mend, prosecute and incarcerate. In further bad news, there will be additional victims when ghetto rat is finally released and re-offends. One could even be you.

Mr. Haith needs to take a rifle class from either Larry Vickers or Kyle Lamb who are both in the Fayetteville NC area.
A little more training and the intruder might possibly be in a slightly worse condition that “critical”.
True, but not inside the house. Think of the carpets! Plus you don’t want the taint of someone violently expiring inside your house. You want him mobile just enough to run back outside and finish the job you started.
It is good advertising for everyone to see what happens when someone tries to break into your house. Let him stumble around the neighborhood a bit.
I wonder if you could file a civil suit against the guy’s estate to pay for the damage to the house?

Will the anti-gun nuts please note that a semi-auto AR-15 in the hands of a civilian does not seem to jump up and spray 30 rounds around the neighborhood every time the trigger is touched, nor does it target women and children first. Instead, it shoots what it’s pointed at as many times as the shooter decides. In this case, it seems the answer is The Perp, Once, and very nicely done.
One incident like this reduces crime more than a thousand politician speeches.

To anti-gun nuts, this event is still “gun violence,” and needs to be stopped at all costs. Better if the homeowner were assaulted in his own home than he defend it and himself with a gun. Especially an AR-15.
A blogger (in NC, coincidentally) has a knack for pointing out that a shocking number of “gun crimes” and “gun violence” stories seem to involve criminals being shot, often by other criminals.
His term for this phenomenon is “felon-seeking bullets,” due to the extensive rap sheets the “victims” tend to have acquired.
Shouldn’t that be “bullet-seeking felons”? 🙂

He got a new 5.56mm piercing because he was mistaken about the no-one-being-home part, not because he thought no one would be armed.
The creep who was shot was treated and released from the hospital. Both he and his accomplice in the getaway car outside are now in police custody. One hopes other creeps in Vance County, NC, will think twice about breaking into homes they think are unoccupied.

Seems to be more to this story than what Haith is letting on.
What home invasion starts with a chauffeured assailant knocking the door for 15 minutes? He keeps an AR-15 under his bed? Was he expecting a visit a la Pulp Fiction?
Home invasion teams knock on the door to see if anyone is home. No answer means (to them) no one at home, go ahead and break in. Oops. If someone does answer, the one at the door makes a decision as to whether rushing the occupant makes sense or not (as in, old lady all alone answers).
“He keeps an AR-15 under his bed?” If you can’t put your weapon into action in seconds it’s not much f-ing good chief. I suppose in your little world you have time to down an espresso before dealing with a home invasion.
If Haith lives alone and/or doesn’t have children or irresponsible adults around, it’s nobody’s business but his own how and where he keeps his guns. Hell, I know a guy who keeps a loaded AR-15 propped behind his bedroom door (lives alone, no kids), and another who keeps a loaded revolver in the dresser drawer (old couple, kids long since grown and moved away), unless they have visitors.
The reason? Because if you need a gun for self-defense, you generally need it right now.
And it’s not about “expecting” anything. If you expected your home to be invaded, wouldn’t you choose to live elsewhere rather than be there when it happens? It’s about being prepared, just in case something does happen.
They seem to get kinda dusty when they’re stashed under the bed, though.
It’s Haith’s natural right to defend his life and property. Just as its the right of readers interested in the precise truth to inquire if this was indeed a random home invasion or if there’s something more to the story.
Why is questioning the circumstances of the story the same as questioning the Castle Doctrine and the Second Amendment?
The details by Haith’s admission seem to point to an assassination attempt than a home invasion.
I often will not answer my door if I’m not expecting someone. I also keep a loaded shotgun right beside my bed (bachelor). If I was the person involved in the described situation, my actions would have ended up being identical to Mr. Haith’s.
I’d like to know if it was 15 minutes of constant knocks, or several attempts over 15 minutes. 15 minutes of solid knocking would get me pissed enough to tell the person to fuck off.
Mr. Haith needs more time at the range.

The BG remained sufficiently capable of operation that he fled the home, only collapsing once outside.
Any long-arm at indoor distances ought to have the bullet wounds all but touching, not a couple feet apart, and they ought to be placed where the threat is most immediately stopped.
Homeowner showed guts, determination, and will-to-fight, if we ever meet the beer’s on me–but his shot placement sucked. Two hits with 5.56 ought not leave the BG running around afterwards.

Good marksmanship being all the more necessary since he was using a long-arm. Choosing to use a weapon like that as home defense should, out of a sense of responsibility, go hand-in-hand with a choice to become proficient with it. A round fired from that type of weapon is far more likely to cause unintended damage if it misses the mark than would a handgun or shotgun round.
The story implies – but doesn’t explicitly say – that the homeowner fired once. The bullet passed through the suspect, creating and entry and an exit wound, and hit the wall. (“That was my round,” said Haith. “Evidently, it went through his body and struck the wall.”)
Also, based on the video report, it appears the homeowner may have been crouching and the suspect was standing at very close range, nearly bad-breath distance. The bullet would have entered the stomach area, traveled upward through the chest and out the shoulder area, and hit the wall slightly above shoulder-height. Still a center-mass hit, just an odd angle.
One shot center mass. Hardly poor shot placement especially against a non paper target.
Really? “The bullet pierced the Johnson’s stomach and shoulder.” Those two points of impact are typically a foot or two apart on a person facing you. It seems an odd single bullet that would injure both the shoulder AND stomach.
Must be one of those new boomerang rounds. 🙂

I got the impression from reading the man’s description (or at least the way the article represents it) that he was squatting down when he fired, since the perp was standing over him. I think that’s why the shot went into the stomach, but out of the shoulder area……?
More details will follow, I believe. That this is apparently a white Southern male shooting an African American/black male (home invasion & self-defense notwithstanding), the media will most likely pounce on this and dig up all the details………..
I also predict, sadly, that if the perp survives (which apparently he has, given comments above), he will sue the man who shot him. I’ve read often that if the perp is shot and lives, it becomes a nightmare for the shooter who simply defended him/herself, because of the use of a gun for self-defense. Being this is an AR-15………..yeah.
Despite all the high-fiving going on here, I am sorry that the scum-bag forced Mr. Haith to seriously injure (or kill) him.
Being forced to kill another person, even a scum-bag criminal who is threatening your own life, is not a good thing. I celebrate Mr. Haith’s survival, but I am sorry that he will be faced with the mental and emotional issues (and any possible lawsuit by the scum-bag and/or his surviving family) arising from this shooting.
If you’ve been there, you will understand. If you haven’t, well, go on cheering.
