Various media outlets have confirmed that John Boehner will convene a Select Committee to investigate the Benghazi scandal.
It will be headed by Trey Gowdy.
House Republicans will announce their intention to form a special select committee on Benghazi Friday, intensifying already highly-charged GOP scrutiny of the Obama administration’s handling of the September 2012 attacks that left four Americans dead.
The committee will be led by GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina.
The announcement comes after newly released documents reignited the controversy over how the White House and the State Department crafted their response to the attack. Republicans allege that the White House knowingly misled the public about the origin of the assault in order to bolster claims that terrorist groups had been weakened during Obama’s first term; Democrats say that the GOP has fueled the controversy for political purposes alone.
Earlier Friday, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa announced the subpoena of Secretary of State John Kerry over documents related to the attack.
Gowdy seems like the right person for the job. From October2013:

They couldn’t have picked a better person than Trey Gowdy. The Whitehouse must be sweating bullets.
Boehner may be sweating orange bullets as well…Gowdy would make a fine Speaker next term.
What a punk the Weeper is. In trying to saw a leg off the tea party stool, he’s willing to do this. Why has he never done anything equivalent when it comes to re-funding the stimulus every year?
The Weeper must go, at least back on the House floor if not all the way back to Ohio.
Oh, hell yeah, they’re sweating bullets! After all, they’ve bought what, about eight billion in the last six years?
I look forward to the former prosecutor making the appropriate people appropriately uncomfortable when shining the light on their abandonment of our US ambassador and 3 other heroes
I’ll wager that Hitlery will weep under oath.
“Look what that a meany Gowdy is. He made the Smartest Woman on Earth weep! See, she cares!” the MSM report.
Old enough to remember watching Sam Ervin and Howard Baker at work. Neither could hold a candle to Trey Gowdy, though Ervin was a sly old coot. For once Boehner is doing something right. This is so much worse than Watergate.
I’d like to see Trey teamed up with Louis Gohmert.
Both know how to interrogate, and neither is someone who will put up with any BS.
I’d prefer to have Louie do a political version of The Bear from Inglourious Basterds.
Just picture him sitting quietly behind Gowdy, slowly stroking his Louisville Slugger with a bemused look on his face.
I am so glad the Lord let me live long enough to watch this show.
I still remember Gowdy from his Forensic File episode appearances as the local SC prosecutor, all prior to his congressional career, of course. He gets a bit rowdy (for the genre) in the Skeleton Key episode.
This was a great pick. Gowdy is excellent. Competence is refreshing.
Fox News coverage 24/7 and there is nothing liberals can do about it…
Too bad we couldn’t toss in Ted Cruz as co-counsel with his ability to recall facts and details on the fly….
Technically, there is nothing to prevent it. However, he would have to expect likely retaliation from Dingy Harry.
Finally, some good news. How I have been thirsting for some.
I love Gowdy’s approach. It’s brilliant.
We know that with every Obama administration scandal:
1) Obama will say he’s more outraged than anyone … and then will do nothing.
2) Then they run out the clock. This is made possible by the curiously incurious media.
3) Then they try to close the book and/or say debate is over.
4) Then they say, “Dude, that was a long time ago, what difference does it make?”
5) Then the media fault’s the Republicans for dwelling in the past, wasting time and money chasing old, phony scandals.
The Republicans have to start echoing Gowdy in unison.
Keep asking, “Media, do you know …? And if not, why not?”
The Obama admin can get away with almost anything with the complicity of the media.
The GOP must start calling the media out with specific questions and keep hammering them as to why they don’t know the answers to these questions.
It will serve to discredit the media to those who are fair minded and still give it the benefit of the doubt, and it will keep the scandals in the spotlight and on the minds of the voters.
GOP: Don’t whine and harp about the admin’s obfuscations and stonewalling … go after the media as prosecutors asking them why they don’t know the answers to questions they should know.
My only quibble with Trey’s great performance is that he should’ve begun each and every question with, “Dear Media, do you know? … and why don’t you know? to remind the viewers to whom all these questions are addressed.
A rare fantastic performance by a Republican.
Gowdy is an excellent pick. He is a expert at destroying witnesses who are lying.
I expect to see some of the witnesses start taking the 5th, especially some of those who have testified previously to one of the other committees before the last two document dumps.
Morel should be glad Hillary’s pals are paying him $1 million+ to “consult” because he’s going to need a really good lawyer. His stories of editing the talking points on his own don’t add up, he got guidance from someone. And given his rank, it wasn’t the cleaning lady.
But don’t expect Obama to confess. They will continue to flaunt subpoenas, redact documents, and delay, delay, delay.
993 days to go.
Water boarding at Gitmo came to mind, but hey, Trey will put them on the rack.
Can someone provide a link defining just what a Special Committee can do, who they can interview and all that good stuff. Thanks!
From Wikipedia, “A select committee is usually created by a resolution that outlines its duties and powers and the procedures for appointing members.” We’re going to have to watch that resolution very closely. This committee could end up completely toothless if Boehner goes all bipartisan on us or the ground rules limit the committee’s authority.
My bet would be that…IF Gowdy is on board…the committee will have broad subpoena powers, will be able to depose witnesses on written questions (including Pres. ScamWOW), and will include a couple of people with prosecutor backgrounds as staff.
I would LOVE to see Andy McCarthy as a staff member, but that may be too much to ask…
I think if I wanted to put up a fluffball, do-nothing show committee on Benghazi, the last guy I’d get to lead it is Trey Gowdy.
What’s this? A Republican with a spine? Call me a cynic, but my first instinct is to assume that spineless Boehner is setting him up somehow.
I see your trepidation there since we’ve got rumors of a palace coup in the next session to remove Boehner and Goudy is considered the top person to replace him.
if anyone knows of live streams (I know will be in future) when he is doing this would appreciate them letting me know somehow.
this is one I would like to stream.
With out reading any others comments i will say. Great ! Let the heads roll . Rep.Trey Gowdy is the next smartest person in the room next to Senator Cruz(and Professor of course). Gowdy can out think, out smart them . If the ‘Shadows’ don’t pick to hard on him we may have a investigation with intentions to get to the ‘Truth.’
keep an eye on the Repubs and how they act. Gowdy will need back-up..
My thoughts exactly.
Give ’em hell, Rep. Gowdy, they deserve it. And keep your radar up regarding the senior senator from AZ — he’s a player for the other team; it sickens me to see him standing up there with you, getting face time, scoring points — and frankly his presence makes me suspicious of the outcome’s honesty. But I trust you, Gowdy, (in this matter) which is saying something given the manner in which the GOP have partnered with the Left to degrade our liberties and our sovereignty these past 40 years. I am this close — imagine a gnat — to repudiating the GOP once and for all. Let’s see if you guys have any guts when the hammers start to fall from the progressive, unified front.
I likewise do not trust McCain. Was once an admirer, now can’t stand the duplicitous bastard, no matter how much he plays ‘nice guy’ on local radio. I was souring on him before his last Senate re-election campaign but have absolutely no use for him since ‘Build the Dang Fence!’
Just ran across a photo of McCain hamming it up with Al Sharpton at the WHCD. Gave me the creeps.
Oh boy, I am suppressing hopes. Boehner has a history of puddles and muddles. A manager, not a leader. All it takes, really, is one of them positioned who cares more about their country than about their career, or their life. If they really dig, really expose, do what is right, D.C-area morticians will have a bump in business. If not … the thought is abhorrent.
You go, Trey. Kick ass and take names.
OK, who’s gonna tell Gowdy he needs a new barber?
Trey has a. charming Southern accent that will have even the most liberal dowagers swooning. Expect to husbands turning off the TV .
Blonde southern smart slim & can BBQ . What more do we want girls?
blonde (and slim) are seriously over rated. ever had brisket, Texas style?
