I’ve been learning more, over the past few days, about Duck Dynasty.
This narrative makes a lot of sense:
Duck Dynasty is not the show that they wanted, it is the show that got away from them.
It seems what the producers intended and what A&E envisioned with the show is much different than the show that they ended up with, but they didn’t do anything about it because it was so wildly popular and so wildly profitable. But even with all the money, they have never really been comfortable with what happened.
This is what happened. The whole idea of the show was to parade these nouveau riche Christian hillbillies around so that we could laugh at them. “Look at them,” we were supposed to say. “Look how backward they are! Look what they believe! Can you believe they really live this way and believe this stuff? See how they don’t fit in? HAHAHA”
When the producers saw the way the show was shaping up, different than they envisioned it, they tried to change course. They tried to get the Robertson’s to tone down their Christianity, but to their eternal credit they refused. They tried to add fake cussin’ to the show by inserting bleeps where no cussword was uttered. At best, they wanted to make the Robertson’s look like crass buffoons. At worst they wanted them to look like hypocrites.
They desperately wanted us to laugh at the Robertsons. Instead, we loved them.
A&E wanted The Beverly Hillbillies. Instead, A&E got more than it could handle.

It really looks bad for A & E. Rumors about the show not being what they wanted have been around since it started to get popular. Then came the don’t pray, don’t say Jesus thing. Then it was fake bleeping. Now the GQ interview. A & E doesn’t deserve the show. It’s sad because Marc Walberg a fairly devout Catholic and his family are set to take the time slot after DD… Won’t watch it now.
The A&E brain trust are typical libtard dream world morons. Do they not remember how popular and LOVED Andy Griffith and Mayberry were? And how about hilarious Green Acres in which the snazzy wife (brilliantly played by Zsa Zsa Gabor) from NYC was the one who usually looked the fool? What about other home-spun shows with a traditional moral message, such as Bonanza, Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, and a number of others? Geez, WHAT ABOUT GOMER PYLE, USMC? Dumb hillbilly? Yeah. Kind, ethical, gracious and loved? Yeah. A&E has much to learn about human nature.
Just because the media and entertainment industry have tried for thirty years to condition and brainwash us into abandoning those values with their trash doesn’t mean it worked.

I have to disagree with Mrs Douglas (Eva Gabor) being made the fool. In a serious show she would have, but each time Mr Douglas thought he’d shown her ideas to be silly, Ebb, Mr Haney, and the rest of Hooterville (I’d love to visit THAT town!) would back up her harebrained schemes and make them appear rational, which would drive him over the edge.
That was true in some of the “plots”, but she generally looked foolish in the way she dressed and the things she wanted to do.
It’s significant that our betters decided these shows had to go in the 1969-72 rural purge, fortunately living on in syndication.

There is something else that I don’t think has been mentioned, and would only be apparent to those who’ve watched the show several times. Phil has a certain….mmmmm…. bearing or demeanor or way that he carries himself that commands respect. He’s very calm, cool and collected, as they say. He exudes intelligence and a certain gentle wisdom along with a very subtle, kind humor. After listening to and watching him for awhile, one easily concludes he’ a real good dude but not someone to trifle with in a serious manner for long.
Where acting like a pig in prime time catapaulted the slutty Miley Cyrus to leftist pop cultural icon status, Robertson’s show of good character and bravery will catapault him to conservative icon status.
A&E’s loss will be some other network’s astounding gain.
Mizzzzz Cyrus’ 30 seconds are up. Nobody really wants to see her tongue hanging out of the corner of her mouth like some exhausted Boston Terrier.
Or any other part of her anatomy which I am sure is up next a la Britney Spears.
Think again. She is doing Time’s square NYE…she has another huff or two of bong smoke left in her.
If you want to laugh AT someone, the number one rated show is Pajama Boy.

About a century ago, according to my father (alov hasholom), my granadfather refused to have Hearst “yellow journalism” papers in the house. He was vetoed by my grandmother and the kids, who liked the funny papers. Story of one ex-Mitteleuropische family learning to be Americans.

Don’t forget the needless and casual obscenity; the constant ridiculing of fathers and men; the absurd let the inmates run the asylum philosophy of child rearing. The last comedy I watched was Cosby show. Before that, the Jeffersons, and All in the Family.Television comedies haven’t been funny for a long time.
I don’t remeber the name of the show, but the family comedy starring Damon Wayans was good too. And showed the father as someone to respect too.

Petticoat Junction, Beverly Hillbillies, and Green Acres were actually tied together, with characters swapping from one show to the other.
About ten years ago I recall reading that TV executives went looking for some modern day Clampetts in Appalachia and the Ozarks to base an updated reality version of the Beverly Hillbillies on. They came up empty handed because modern rural America is doted with satellite TV dishes and everyone has internet. It stunned them that rural people today are well aware of news events along with current entertainment and fashion trends. That the executives were surprised by this tells you just how ignorant they are.
Around the same time I remember a couple of columns about how the self described well-informed people in New York, LA and Chicago found themselves thinking why is the death of this Dale Earnhardt character big news? They’d never even heard of him.
That reveals who really are the “backward” folks today doesn’t it.
Living in a micro-mini-fringe subculture in some metroplex where you only flock with fellow burds of the same feather leaves one very ignorant indeed.
Reminds me of some fashion industry employees, and retailers comments they relayed to audiences. Insights on how they find their customers in the “fly over” country are more up to the minute and aware of trends, and more sophisicated…

Lookin a little further into the series creator I find he was from Missouri near the Ozarks . Hence the joke is Beverley Hills Missouri which has an elevation of 600 feet & about 400 people.

Henning and his wife Ruth donated land to a conservation area near Branson, Missouri. It is 1,534-acres of oak and hickory forest, steep hills, and glades with trails created by the Missouri Department of Conservation and members of Boy Scouts.
Supposeldy, his wife Ruth told Paul about her grandparents’ tiny hotel near the Rock Island Railroad station in Eldon, Missouri. This became the inspiration for Petticoat Junction.
What’s really hypocritical about this is that A&E, having yielded to GLAAD at the first pinprick of discomfort, now says that they won’t change their minds, because that would be caving in to pressure. ROTFLMAO
And the reason they caved to GLAAD is ….. because they’re BFF? No; could it possibly be (say it softly) – pressure?
A&E has also mentioned “we don’t want to offend our advertisers.”
Point 1: Advertisers purchase ads on shows that they think will bring sales to their products. How will having the audience of DD go from, say, 6 million down to 1 million encourage advertisers to continue purchasing ads?
Point 2: TV Ratings are based on viewer numbers. A&E has clearly offended a huge number of viewers (over 1.5 million on the “Support Phil” Facebook page) and those viewers will vote with their remotes. How many GLAAD supporters were/are viewers? How many people are even affiliated with GLAAD?
It’s long past time for Christians, conservatives, etc. to take a page from the LGBT playbook and create their own version of “GLAAD”. Every time Christianity is laughed at or demeaned; every time bigotry is shown (as in calling the DD people “rednecks”); whenever the notion of a traditional family (a married Mom & Dad with kids) gets belittled, our version of GLAAD could leap into action on social media and the phones, threatening action against sponsors unless the offensive people/material is removed.
We can’t remain on the defensive forever. There’s no hope of even achieving a stalemate that way; sieges almost always result in defeat for the defender.
Considering the audience I’ve always felt mockery would work better. The average gay activist tends to be extraordinarily thin skinned. I’d love to see a Heterosexual Pride Parade that shoved their stereotype down thir throats by embracing it. After all, it is odd that the gay image makers think the very people who have the most children to lack all sex appeal. Maybe the frumpy, uncool suburban “breeders” know more about sex than they do. We’re Square. We Have Kids. Get Used to It.
Also why not sue to be allowed to belong to their organizations? Since Conservative and Evangelical Christian activists vastly outnumber gay activists I suspect they would backdown in a hurry.
THIS. How thin skinned have people become. Phil Robertson said he disagreed with their lifestyle and that the Bible said it was a sin. He did not advocate any action to be taken against them, except to show them God’s love. But because he said something that could hurt their feelings, they want him off the air?
I am tired of being called a bigot or a homophobe because I follow God’s teachings. I am not aware of any Christian group harming or advocating harm to any homosexual group. I am not aware of any incidents of violence against gays after certain states began recognizing gay marriage, be it enacted by the state legislature or by the judiciary. All I have seen are Christians disapproving and requesting that their business or church not have to participate in something that they disagree with on religious principles. Yet these extreme homosexual groups demand that Christians deny their religious principles and support them. Christian business are being sought by homosexuals to participate in these gay marriage ceremonies and are being sued and/or prosecuted if they refuse. Why? If someone disagrees with me, I merely wish them well and go my merry way. I do not expect everyone to agree with my positions, and if someone does not I do not try to destroy them in any way possible. Are these people so thin skinned that anything less than full capitulation is allowed?
Do to them what the universities are doing to Judaeo-Christian and other Conservative groups: you don’t have to be Jewish or Christian to be a member of Hillel or YFC and you must be allowed to vote. Total inclusion. Great idea. People should join up and take over and change the GLAAD charter.
In such a parade, have a guy in fool’s motley smiling and waving at the crowd while wearing a sandwich board saying, “Hi! My name is Gay Gene! I’m REALLY happy!”

I’m convinced that A&E is under a lot of pressure to cancel Duck Dynasty because its popularity is a huge blow to the narrative that the people that share the values of Phil Robertson and his family are a minority. Remember, this is the story that the mainstream media and the left has been pushing all along: conservatives, christians, people who hold on to traditional values are a minority. The “majority” are those that are watching the “hip and cool” shows such as “Girls” (its season finale drew 632,000 last June).
Duck Dynasty unmask this narrative for the lie that it is; 11.8 million viewers saw the season premiere last August 14th and since you can’t argue with this fact you need to hide it in order to keep the narrative going. And so at least in A&E, Duck Dynasty can’t be allowed to survive. I believe A&E will grudgingly part with the millions it get from Duck Dynasty for the “greater good” of stamping out the traditional values that Phil Robertson and his family represent.
A&E may part ways with Duck Dynasty, but Robertsons willing the show will continue on another network

I’m of Central European Jewish and Scandinavian descent, and my first ancestors in the USA barely got here in time for the Civil War, but most of whom arrived some time after. I’m neither Southern, heavily Scots-Irish in ethnic background (although a Calvinist by faith), nor, as I’ve said, can I point to ancestors here before 1776.
However, I’ve known a few folks of Scots-Irish stock from the southern Appalachians, and found them quite likeable people. If people mistook me for one of them, (unlikely, since I don’t share the accent and was not from a rural or mining background), I would not feel insulted in the least.
The well-timed spectacle coincides with a court ruling which attacks Utah’s heterosexual marriage law. It’s probably not a coincidence that the activists selected Utah. A state controlled by a majority Mormon population, which just happens to be a disfavored minority Christian sect.
Might be a minority in the US or the world but not a minority in Utah.
On Twitter I suggested the Duck Dynasty merchandisers take advantage of the under served gay market for duck calls by coming out with the “Ron Jeremy” line in a shape and form that the potential customers might find pleasing.

What most elitists don’t really understand is that there is a lot more use in this world for redneck plumbers than PhD’s in Latin American Lesbian Literature.

The outrage, even among conservative talking heads, has mostly described duckman’s comments as completely ignorant (beyond the raw descriptions), yet he was essentially quoting scripture.
Bernie Goldberg was apoplectic, saying that to believe homosexual behavior is “wrong”, is as ignorant and backwards as believing in a flood covering the earth 6000 years ago. Such rage has been almost universal, with little but “hate” for any that would not accept homosexual lifestyles as anything but normal, brave, and genetically determined, by God.
But more broadly, the culture of unlimited sexual promiscuity is something with which old societies had experience. The old wise men (for those that don’t believe the Bible is completely authored by God) didn’t have the scientific advances that we do to date the earth, but they were wise on successful societal/familial norms.
That is why the Jude-Christian culture endured for 1000’s of years. It is largely why the west has won so much. We don’t read the Bible for science, but for cultural lessons. I’m sure old Bernie doesn’t think he is irrelevant, just because he is out of touch with modern science in the computer world.
This faith held belief that “being gay” is genetic is accepted as part of the PC religion, yet they’ve found no “gay gene”. There may be some proclivities in some genetic markers, but any gay gene would quickly be removed by natural selection. But maybe on this issue they prefer to deny evolutionary science.
While they scream at any that claim a gay lifestyle is a choice, they seem to believe that everyone could/should enjoy experimenting with gay sex. And even homosexual relationships generally mimic straight relationships, with one more “butch or fem”. So they seem a little one sided on their “born gay” article of faith.
Duckman (or Christians in general) was not calling for any action against gays. He believes in Christian love toward them, like everyone. But no discussion is allowed to challenge PC Religion … only outrage if any question whether “being gay” is really a God given from birth state of same sex preference (despite their significant other often simulating the opposite sex).
As Obama might say … “Let’s have that conversation”. Instead they want hiring preferences and minority privilege entitlements, and acceptance as genetically superior liberals.
I’ll wait for Miley or Madonna to tell me if they are genetically lesbian, or just playing around by choice.

Just like there’s a pedophilia gene, a bestiality gene, a necrophilia gene, and thousands of various fetish genes.
All perfectly normal and selected for the greater good by evolution.
But, you can be sure that’s there are no heterosexual genes or genes that cause little girls to like dolls and little boys to like guns and trucks. That’s all strictly a product of the culture that they are in. . . . .

The posters over in the news group misc.rural (1990, give or take) got to comparing notes about homosexual behavior among farm animals. Turned out there was quite a bit of it. There is more going on than it looks, but may chaos have mercy on anyone who decides to do solid research, and it will not be the hetro’s doing the attacking.
So, words hurt their feelings, and yet the only one truly punished is Phil? Got it. If I could sue for every time I have been offended by words, I’d be a bazillionaire.
