Should be interesting.
There is such a thing as overplaying your hand.
The conventional wisdom is that Republicans who have overplayed theirs. I’m not so sure.
Reid spox: "Tomorrow, the Senate will do exactly what we said we would do and reject" the House #CR.

The default response is always: It’s the republican’s fault!
Whatever. Low info voters will blame whoever the media tells them to blame and it’s not like they were going to be voting republican anytime in the future.
Sure, except that polling shows even the subsets of Republican voters and voters who oppose Obama-Care are against a shutdown to stop it and believe it will be Republicans’ fault.
The LIVs are not yet even paying attention, but will be added to the chorus.
And if the new polling follows the predictions of the current ones, Obama and Reid will no incentive at all to seek a deal. They don’t care about America or the people, all they care about is their own political power and winning the confrontation.
There’s an old saying in deal-making: “The winner of a negotiation is nearly always the one who is willing to walk away.”
Democrats – Obama in particular, and his far left fanatics – believe that anything that harms America is justice, karma, and good for the world. They don’t have to cave, they see the pain as our comeuppance.
Anyone receiving a government check isn’t going to want an interruption in the flow of $$$ so of course they aren’t going to want a shut down.
I don’t really care about them, to be honest. I’m more concerned about the millions of people who are being held hostage and paying for them.
Social Security checks continue (direct deposit on 99.99% of them anyway) as do VA and various military and civil service retirement. Essential personnel which is 40 something percent continue to work although they would like a day or two off. The most affected will be contractors who probably will keep on working and just get paid late. I think the “shutdown” is going to be like the “sequestration” and very few will even notice or care outside of DC. Continuing to cry wolf to get attention may turn into another bust like the Great Sequestration Scare.
Shutting down a government as corrupt as this one is, would be a Godsend!
I wouldn’t mind if it were shutdown until about January 20, 2017
Sanddog is correct, of course. But if the Reid spox did say what was quoted above, it’s gonna be awful hard for Reid to wiggle out of full ownership of the shutdown.
Fantasy. Reid doesn’t need to wriggle or explain at all. The public already blames us.
And those who are on the fence will likely fall for his plea for a “clean CR” because it sounds good.
It is very hard to win a battle if you believe you are going to lose.
It sounds as if the senate, tomorrow, will again demonstrate that it is the world’s greatest deliberative body.
I’ve been wondering. Did the Ted Cruz and the GOP play Obama and the Democrats? Suppose all the drama of last week, with the old farts denouncing Cruz, was part of the play. Suppose the point of Cruz’s filibuster was to show that the GOP could not be held accountable for a shut down. Suppose the point of the House’s action (funding government and the military but not Obamacare) was to show that the GOP was doing what is right by the country. Suppose the point of Boehner’s suddenly acquiring spine and balls was to show up the Democrats as being unwilling to deal.
If it is, it is brilliant. Suppose the whole thing is a Palin-Cruz plan to sidestep the media and reach the country about Democrat intransigence.
If it is, it is working beautifully.
Working beautifully?
How, exactly? By convincing conservative Republicans that Reid is a jerk?
I’ve seen no evidence at all that this resonates with the voters. Every single poll I’ve seen shows people hate the idea of a shutdown, including those who oppose Obama-Care and including Republicans, and will blame the GOP by double-digit margins.
If you have new data, I’d love to see it.
When most people say they don’t want a shutdown they have no idea what it is. They think Social Security checks stop, the Post Office is closed, and the airports. That the FBI is gone fishing. When you explain that only non-essential stuff as in the sequestration such as White House tours, Mrs Obama’s second butler, federal archeological digs at Key West, some seminars for the feds in Vegas are delayed or canceled, the public says that is great. The Democrats and the media use it to scare people. Most of the public will not even notice. Yes Wall Street will react as they do when a president threatens another country with bombing for regime change. Bring it.
Crises after crises but nothing really changes.
I see no crisis in this shutdown episode; rather, it is an opportunity to jam a stick in obama’s spokes.
Next week the debt ceiling.
In the House – the situation is Serious but not Hopeless.
In the Senate – things are Hopless… but not Serious.
“Tomorrow”
The Gov will shut down, Tomorrow …
… and I’m gonna get a vasectomy!
LHC (who is so upset, he can’t finish the song … Waaaah !!!)
say it ain’t so
That former WSJ meteorologist whose IPCC induced sob session at the San Fran airport made a vast deferens in his ballsy save the world, spare the sperm stance is my hero, my guru, my eunuch.
See, global warming even has us by the balls. Is there anything it can’t do?
We need a hashtag, #WhatWillIDoIfGovermentShutsDown
For my part: Sing and dance a jig.
Only be sure to spell government correctly.
Must be that public education I had. #WhatWillIDoIfGovernmentShutsDown
#GiveUsTheMoneyOrTheBallsGetIt
Does Obamacare cover vasectomies? Anybody got Fluke’s number?
I prefer linux over eunuchs.
Yeah, he’s all of our hero. I’d like to slap his mother.
This guy is willing to remove himself from the gene pool? Excellent. There is a “Darwin Award” website, but most people there kill themselves. His life is spared, and we are spared his progeny. Other than it goes against what I believe God wants for us, I think it is a good idea.
So two kinds of women have more than 4 children. The religious and those on the dole. Liberals severely limit the number of children they have.
Just when Boehner is getting some balls!
More popcorn.
I think it is time to put the shoe on the other foot.
Let’s start calling the Dems what they are as we debate them ….
DEBT DENIERS
or
FREEDOM DENIERS
You’re just being “Tyrannophobic” 🙂
The ONLY place this will resolve itself is in the marketplace.
As soon as October rolls around, people will be calling the exchanges. Who knows? Maybe dialing in will drive enough people crazy?
Others won’t join. Until “something happens” and they feel forced to buy the insurance. Or else? Or else, come April, they won’t get their automatic refunds.
It will be an even bigger test in October 2014.
That’s when you’ll be able to judge the marketplace.
And, whether or not Americans line up to buy insurnace.
If you think most people like their insurance, think again.
And, some people (with families) have had to shell out $1,300 and more a month! If you’re hours are cut. And, you’re trying to make ends meet. Plus, you’re paying more for gas. And, perhaps, rent … Exactly where are you supposed to come up with insurance money?
Even when you’re insuring yourself, you’re hoping to use it on a rainy day.
For Obama? Maybe, more Federal jobs pushing paper.
That won’t hurt the democraps, ahead. Maybe, the GOP is just suicidal? They love to go to war! But think of the results being “like” Irak. And, Afghanistan. In which case most people don’t like war no more.
If Boehner caves, he loses his Speakership in one year (or less) because Dems will take the House. I think he understands that. Finally, Boehner has something to fight for … Boehner! Whatever it takes.
Here is my bet, if anyone is gonna get played it will be us. Boehner can change is spots this easily, some sort of deal was made last week. There will be no shut down and there will be a delay in implementing Obamacare. Democrats got all those phone calls last week too and are well aware how pissed off the American people are. They don’t want a years worth of obamacare anger simmering on the stove ready to get dished out to them in 2014. They don’t want implementation either, or that pesky tax on devices.
Hope I am wrong.
I admit it, I’m jaded. If past republican behavior is any indication, we’ll end up with the worst of both worlds. First, they’ll get blamed for “shutting down the government” – the media will make sure of that. Then, Boehner will cave, make a deal with the dems, and we’ll end up with both Obamacare and no cuts in other spending. Like you, I hope I’m wrong.
KAYLEE: Shepherd Book said they was men who just… reached the edge of space, saw a vasty nothingness… and went bibbledy over it.
JAYNE: Oh, hell. I’ve been to the edge. Just looked like more space.
Nicely done. At least Serenity didn’t end up in the Delta Quadrant.
These days, “conventional wisdom” is a leftist term for they amazingly manipulate the corrupt idiots running the GOP into thinking.
‘Conventional wisdom’ my ass: look at Ted Cruz’s poll numbers: he is now the #1 GOP nominee in 2016.
