ABC News reports that the first public sighting of Zimmerman since his acquittal occurred late last week while he was pulling a man from an overturned pickup truck on the side of the road.
Zimmerman was one of two men who came to the aid of a family of four — two parents and two children — trapped inside a blue Ford Explorer SUV that had rolled over after traveling off the highway in Sanford, Fla. at approximately 5:45 p.m. Thursday, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The crash occurred at the intersection of I-4 and route Route 46, police said. The crash site is less than a mile from where Zimmerman shot Martin.
By the time police arrived, two people – including Zimmerman – had already helped the family get out of the overturned car, the sheriff’s office said. No one was reported to be injured.
Zimmerman was not a witness to the crash and left after speaking with the deputy, police said.
The good samaritan act put Zimmerman’s efforts to remain hidden from the public eye on hold for a moment. Efforts that most would agree are well founded.
Since the night of the shooting, Zimmerman, as well as just about anyone remotely linked to him, have experienced threats of violence and death to varying degrees, according to ABC News.
“We have had an enormous amount of death threats. George’s legal counsel has had death threats, the police chief of Sanford, many people have had death threats,” Zimmerman’s father, Robert Zimmerman said.”‘Everyone with Georgie’s DNA should be killed’ — just every kind of horrible thing you can imagine.”
I’m not sure what, if any, effect this random act of kindness will have on the barrage of threats the Zimmerman camp has been exposed to over the last 16 months.
If nothing else, perhaps it can serve at least to show a more human side of a man who has been fairly consistently vilified by many on the national media stage.
UPDATE 7/22/2013 at 5:00pm EDT: Breitbart News reports that Zimmerman also assisted in extinguishing the fire.
According to Sanford Police, Zimmerman had a fire extinguisher with him. The eyewitness told Breitbart News he helped assist the family out of the vehicle and put out the fire with the extinguisher.

Was commenter Theresa Root under the impression that the roll-over rendered all the vehicle occupants mute? Because I didn’t see that fact reported in the story I read.
If the victims didn’t want Mr. Zimmerman’s assistance, they could have communicated that to him, either with words or gestures. As for Ms. Root, if in a future vehicle crash she prefers to be left in the road to be incinerated in a fuel fire or run over by another vehicle, that’s her choice (and I’m willing to respect her choice, should I happen to drive by the scene of her accident).
It would help if she posted her picture so citizen heroes can leave her in her burning car until the official responders come to extricate her without hurting her. If she’s still alive then, of course.

I’ve seen the same comments. Kind of tough to stage this without Hollywood assistance- and all of Hollywood are anti-Zimmerman, so we know that didn’t happen.

She continued saying, “There’s some suspicion — and I don’t want to spread this, but I’m just going to tell you what I’ve been hearing — they suspect maybe the police are killing some of these kids.” How are people like this elected to office? I have noted the lack of any attention from the media on how puny the total turnout was for 100 locations in major cities through out the country. I think the media was so surprised that they can’t admit the massive protests (and potential violence) they envisioned just didn’t happen.

I have had 3 written death threats sent through the mail and in my state it is not against the law unless followed through with injury or death to me according to law enforcement nor would the post office do anything. And such threats are not sufficient to obtain a CCW. You hope the threats were just attempts to intimidate you, which did not work with me. But it was always in the back of my mind and I ran through “what if” situations just in case.
Some of those making the threats in the Zimmerman situation could be ID’ed and arrested if the law allows it. The media should be engaged and people shown that there are consequences for such actions, but I doubt that will happen even if the law allows it in Florida. Now if it was a public official threatened, the law would respond. It is, IMO, unconstitutional to have laws that call for a response to threats for officials but not for people like me or Zimmerman.
