Nearly a year after recognizing the “Palestinian State,” Britain, France and Canada have announced sweeping sanctions on Israel.
“The United Kingdom on Tuesday banned trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank,” the Associated Press reported. London “also tightened Britain’s embargo on weapons sales to Israel for use in Gaza to include arms “that materially contribute to the occupation” of Palestinian territories.”
As the third anniversary of the October 7 massacre approaches, the UK and other Western governments are trying to pressure Israel into rewarding the terrorist-ridden Palestinian society with an independent state.

The newly appointed British Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, unveiled a “comprehensive sanction regime” on Israel, accusing it of “war crime” and “deep injustice.” Addressing the Jews living in their historic homeland of Judea and Samaria (or the West Bank), Miliband declared that “You will face the full force of UK sanctions.”
“The foreign secretary has confirmed the government will implement a trade ban with illegal Israeli settlements,” the UK daily Independent reported. “Ed Miliband announced the government officially considers the occupation illegal, as he set out economic sanctions.”

Today’s trade and defense ban appears to be part of a wider campaign, with at least 12 Western countries ganging up on Israel, the BBC reports:

Media reports suggest the decision is driven less by Israel and more by the UK Labour Party’s desperate ploy to secure Muslim and leftist votes. Explaining the “possible explanations for why the Labour government” sanctioned Israel, The Telegraph noted that “it could help the governing party domestically, including at the Holborn and St Pancras by-election next month, and at the Labour Party conference.”

While Israel did not immediately roll out countermeasures, Jerusalem may be planning to downgrade diplomatic ties with the UK and impose travel bans on anti-Israel lawmakers and activists.

As Eugene Kontorovich points in out in several of his videos, the only “illegal” settlements in the West Bank are those that were established in contravention to Israeli law. There is no “international law” that can make Israeli settlements in the West Bank “illegal.” Any illegal settlements to which the British are referring must be those illegal under Israeli law. Why does Britain believe is has a say in Israel’s internal affairs?

Make no mistake, that’s exactly what this is. Consider two Israeli citizens who buy next-door apartments in Hevron. One is Jewish, the other is Arab. According to all these ministers, the first one is an international criminal, and it’s Israel’s duty to arrest him and drag him away from his home in chains, while the second one is completely normal and welcome to live in his new home.
