‘Shockwave’: Germany’s AfD Party Wins Big in Key State Election
Election victory triggers angry anti-AfD protests across Germany.
Despite a massive nationwide media and political campaign, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured a stunning election victory in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt. The right-wing party won 44% of the vote and captured 39 seats in the 83-seat state assembly — leaving it just three seats short of an absolute majority.
With today’s result, the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt could form a government in coalition with the leftist anti-establishment BSW party. A breakaway faction from the far-left Linke party, the BSW secured just over 5%. “One idea being floated is whether there could be informal deal whereby a small party – the BSW – could give their tacit support to allow the AfD to form a minority government,” the BBC noted.
Germany’s ruling Christian Democrats (CDU), who formerly governed the state, came second with a little over 17%. Germany’s Chancellor and CDU chief Friedrich Merz conceded the “most severe election defeat” in “years, or decades,” to quote his own words. “This election result is sending shockwaves,” Merz confessed.
Not just for Chancellor Merz, the outcome is a big setback for Germany’s left-wing establishment. According to the German newspaper Die Welt, the election result showed that the old political establishment is now in “self-destruct” mode. “The political culture of the Berlin Republic is coming to an end. The election outcome, disastrous for the country’s elites, reveals just how detached they have become from reality,” the country’s most-read newspaper commented.
Polish Prime Minister and former EU Council President, Donald Tusk, lashed out at his own countrymen, slamming Poles who cheered the AfD victory as “idiots or traitors”.

While the European elite fumed and panicked, congratulatory messages poured in from leading patriotic and right-wing figures across the West. Elon Musk, Dutch opposition leader Geert Wilders and former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban were among the first to congratulate.

The election result triggered demonstrations across Germany, with angry protesters hitting the streets to urge the government and judiciary to ban the party currently leading nationwide opinion polls.

Germany’s state-run radio station Deutschlandfunk reported Sunday night:
In various cities, [demonstrators] called for a ban on the party. Protests took place in cities including Kiel, Hamburg, Berlin, Aachen, Frankfurt, and Mainz. Further rallies were announced for the evening, including another one in Berlin, as well as in Rostock and Saarbrücken. There will be a rally in Cologne tomorrow, and mobilization is underway in Leipzig for the next weekend. More rallies against the AfD are to be expected.
Clips circulating on social media suggest that Antifa, the U.S.-designated terrorist group, and pro-Hamas outfits were trying to hijack these anti-AfD protests.

In May 2025, the German domestic intelligence agency, the Verfassungsschutz, designated the AfD as a “right-wing extremist” group, a move intended to pave the way for a potential party ban. So far, the government in Berlin has hesitated to initiate the ban. Both the mainstream conservative and socialist parties fear that such a step would trigger a backlash from German voters.

The UK may have one more chance for survival. If the Reform Party wins the national elections in 2029 they may yet step back from the cliff.
Reform UK, or its rivals Restore Britain and Advance UK? Will they compete at the next election and sabotage each other’s chances, or will they cooperate and agree that only one of them should stand a candidate for any one constituency?
I don’t know enough about the parties to say. The last time I checked the Reform party was the most popular party in the UK. Supposedly polls in the UK are far more accurate than they are in the US.
However the UK nation elections are still several years off which probably is an eternity in politics.
My understanding after that election was, like the collusion among the French parties against Le Pen and the dog’s breakfast coalition that is currently trying to govern Germany, Labor, the Conservatives, and Liberal Democrats collaborated to direct votes to only one non-Reform candidate in the constituencies where Reform was the strongest, and the other third parties generally had little impact on Reform’s standing. This is inline with Labor getting only 34 percent of the nationwide vote but winning over 60 percent of the seats in Parliament (411). Reform got 14 percent of the vote nationwide while the Liberal Democrats received about 12 percent but the LD’s won 72 seats to Reform’s 5. The Greens won about 6 percent of the vote but still got 4 seats, almost as many as Reform despite Reform having over double the number of votes.
Christopher B, no, the main parties don’t collude to stand only one of them in a seat. The reason smaller parties have always got seats in the UK parliament is that they’re not small everywhere. Their support is not spread around evenly, and they have regions where they’re the majority party. A party that has strong support but it’s spread evenly won’t win any seats. A party with small support but it’s all in the same place will win a seat. The Liberals (and now the Lib Dems) have existed on that for over a century.
In the previous election Reform decided not to run against Tory candidates, so as not to deliver victory to Labour. But in the last election Reform deliberately decided to give Labour a win, by splitting the right wing vote.
Farage knew very well that this would put Labour in power, but figured it was worth enduring five years of a non-insane Labour, under Starmer rather than Corbyn, in order to put Reform in a position to win next time. The Tories showed that they were useless, and propping them up again would just let them be useless again; the only way forward was to put them out of their misery, and hope that in five years the UK would still exist and could be rescued. Note that Labor went from a landslide loss to a landslide win, without having increased its vote almost at all! The difference was Reform splitting the Tory vote.
But this won’t work if Reform, Restore and Advance don’t all work together. If they split the anti-Tory right-wing vote, they all lose.
Ranked choice voting would fix this problem entirely. But the UK doesn’t have that.
Its self appointed elites. They are not elites in my book. They are traitorous scum that need to be depowered deplatformed deloused and deported even if they are citizens. Next stop for Germany is to leave the EU. Stick a stake right through its heart.

Except that current doctrine has long been for every other party in Germany to “firewall” the AfD. Under this doctrine, it’s more likely for every other party to form a coalition to freeze them out (nd it would require them ALL), rather than for any one party to break ranks (“boo, you Nazis!!”) and aid the AfD. The result of these disparate parties trying to coalesce and work with each other would be simultaneously hilarious and disastrous.

Remember the German constitution was designed to prevent the rise of another Nazi Party, so it has these provisions for banning such parties if they look like they might seriously win an election.
The problem is who decides whether a party is “Nazi-like”? The people drawing up the constitution thought it would be obvious, and of course AfD’s opponents all insist that it is obvious, but it really isn’t.

Did you forget all so soon all the blue states that tried to get Trump thrown off the ballot as a “convicted felon?” So what if a criminal record is no actual constitutional bar to run for office?
I do seem to have forgotten it. I have no memory of this happening. I remember them trying to keep him off the ballot because of their sloppy reading of the 14th amendment, but not because of his felony convictions. Can you cite a state that tried that particular stunt?

So ANTIFA the supposed anti-facist group wants to ban the political party that won the largest majority of a fair election by using violence, threats and intimidation. That might possibly be the most facist thing I’ve heard in a while. Maybe these losers should have been paying more attention to what was actually the sentiment of the German people versus trying to “free palestine.” The biggest thing these idiots fear is the AfD going in and controlling the majority goivernment and then being dear I say it: being normal and effective. Because that is what would happen, not some insane return to nazism. The nazis in the room are the ruling elites, who refuse to listen to their people, will never relinquish power and control, and use their antifa and palestinian thug army to control and intimidate the populous. Of course we’ve seen this playbook in the US in which people have claimed (and continued to claim depsite zero evidence) histrionically that gay and inter-racial marriages will be outlawed if Trump becomes president, that women will be forced into the handsmaid tale nightmare, and black people will be jailed on mass. If COVID had never happended Trumps 1st presidency would have been remembered as remarkably normal, boring and effective.

Fun Fact: Merkel is on record admitting that she allowed the muslim invasion of Germany to succeed, and enabled it in every way, because she believed that it would secure Socialist political control forever – blocking any chance of any “right wing” Party ever holding power.
In the end, it is precisely this invasion of genocidal muslim conquerors that resulted in the political rise of the AfD Party.
Bonus: The only thing “right wing” about them is that they are patriots and NOT socialists. But, the Left can never debate any issue at all, so they just hurl the “NAZI” slur at anyone that opposes them in any way.
These are moderate, normal, Germans that simply want to expel the foreign invaders and have their country back. They are CENTRISTS. The left wing parties are now all far left radicals.
I don’t know enough about them, but many of Europe’s so-called “far right” parties are actually solidly on the left. Le Pen, for instance, is a leftist; just less radical than the ones who seem to be in control of all the other parties. There aren’t any actual rightists in French politics, as far as I can tell.
Specifically, being less radical on immigration is the main inflection point.
