UN Committee Wants Countries to Implement Slavery Reparations

The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) claims countries need to implement slavery reparations due to a 1965 convention on racial discrimination.
“The elimination of racial discrimination cannot be effective, complete or sustainable without a full commitment to review and redress the ongoing harms and consequences of the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialised slavery,” according to members of the committee.
Who are these people? According to the website: “The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is composed of 18 independent experts who are persons of high moral character and recognized competence in the field of human rights, who serve in their personal capacity.”
Ghana President John Dramani Mahama has been pushing for reparations in Africa and on the international stage.
The committee told the countries, though, that money isn’t enough. The reparations must also include “restitution, rehabilitation, and structural reforms.”
“Acknowledgments and apologies should be accompanied by concrete measures and should not replace other appropriate forms of redress,” added the committee.
You know what I love about our Constitution, especially the Bill of Rights? I love that our Founders made it easy to interpret. They really did, but people can twist anything to fit their agenda.
Then there’s Article 6 in the 1965 racial discrimination document:
States Parties shall assure to everyone within their jurisdiction effective protection and remedies, through the competent national tribunals and other State institutions, against any acts of racial discrimination which violate his human rights and fundamental freedoms contrary to this Convention, as well as the right to seek from such tribunals just and adequate reparation or satisfaction for any damage suffered as a result of such discrimination.
“Just and adequate reparation or satisfaction.”
What is just and adequate? What are the limits?

Slavery is a good thing, a win/win, if you live in an economy that runs on hitting the other guy on the head and taking his stuff. Instead of killing your enemy, you enslave him.
It’s an inefficient kind of economy because all your capital goes into self-defense, but it’s stable and worked for thousands of years.
Rule of law and free markets, a gift from the West, made slavery inefficient as well. A slave contributes more working in his own interest than in working as a slave. So slavery was economically obsolete, surviving only on tradition and new invented reasons (“naturally subservient race”) that had no hope of surviving long.
You might as well look for reparations for fire or the wheel.

Rhharden’s thesis is not total fabrication and justification – there’s a reason slavery was historically common and endemic – for certain definitions of “worked” it worked.
And, yes, a war-captive might well personally prefer being a live slave to being dead. Just as a race-victim might well personally prefer being a surviving rape victim to being a dead rape victim. (Not to mention a Venn diagram of slavery and rapery has a large intersecting area.)
But the vast majority of slaves “taken” weren’t war-captives as a side effect, in fact warring to TAKE slaves was often a main reason to goto war – documented historically recently both in Africa and South / Central America. There was a reason Cortez et Alia were able to enlist sufficient native allies to conquer despite being vastly outnumbered by the Aztecs.
I recommend Why Nations Fail for a good overview of the Spanish conquest of the New World, and why they came here and how they accomplished their mission. The book also has some interesting things to say about how the first English settlers in N. America came with the same plan, and why that plan didn’t work out (and how that “nor working out” completely changed the history of the world because it led to our founding, eventually).

To be fair to rhhardin, he is correct in his win/win view if you go back far enough in history. There’s a big battle. Your Tribe? Village? Gang?wins! The other guys lose and here the problem starts. Can you just say, “Bad day for you chaps on the field today, eh?” and send them toddling off home? The advance of civilization progresses until slaves are no longer captive warriors, but a commodity to be bought and sold. Purchase as cheaply as you can and sell them off for a profit just like any product. However as happens with anything that becomes a commodity quality goes down. When captured in battle you got intelligent workers who’d lost. When they’re commodities you get the cheapest product the suppliers can obtain: the dumb ones who are easiest to catch.

I don’t really get why this has so many down votes. I do know that there is debate on whether the Civil War was necessary to end slavery in the U.S. The argument asserting it would have continued probably into the late 19th century is based on how both slave and non-slave states depended on and benefited from slave labor to help drive their economies. Slavery probably would only have become inefficient in the event the raw materials processed through slave labor became too costly to grow or were lost through natural disaster or replaced by cheaper imports. I guess that would be the free markets.
Rule of law certainly applies where and when it can be enforced.
The U.N. needs to define just what type of slavery they mean. Do they mean prisoners of war taken and sold? Do they mean debtors who voluntarily sold themselves to settle their debts? Do they mean persons included in sales or settlements of estates? Do they mean persons abducted and forced into slavery? All of these are historical states of slavery. Is the U.N’s definition only include non-Whites? I bet it does.
Another reason for the eventual demise of slavery was the problem of the main crop; Cotton. Very hard on the soil when grown as a mono crop rapidly depleting nutrients from the soil which is one reason for expanding the crop westward into new fields in new States/Territories.
Then there’s the Brits whose garment and spinning industry was fed by Southern cotton. They were seeking to diversify sourcing. Just as they had with Chinese tea plants being planted in India the Brits sought to break the Ottoman control of Egypt and Levant to source cotton to feed their factories. Add to that the Boll weevil. By 1920 it had significantly impacted the remaining cotton production across the South wiping out cotton production in some areas.

About 40k freed slaves were resettled on confiscated slaves plantation lands and issued army mules.
For a while.
Unfortunately Lincoln’s VP and successor, Johnson, was like much of Lincoln’s cabinet a war-time compromise, being anti-succession but still a (D) – and not an emancipator as such.
After taking office he had the farms repossessed, returned to their original owners, and the ex-slaves forced off. He had no sympathy for them or any interest in protecting any of their theoretical rights as free citizens.
Between him and a congress refilled with returned (D)s 4o Acres never returned.
Some non-govt reparations such as founding of black unis did take place, but the largest was via the repatriation movement – Which even slavery-friendly politicians got behind.
The modern country of Liberia was founded by shipping willing ex-slaves back to Africa – where ironically the 1st thing the freed slaves did was to treat the existing natives as – at best – 2nd class citizens if not out and out slaves.
Meh, plenty of Federal land controlled by Bureau of Land Management to hand over to any applicants. Provide them 60 acres instead of 40 with extra 20 as ‘interest’ plus the present value of a post Civil War mule and a bunch of hand tools/farm tools. Set it up like the homestead act with certain requirements to occupy and improve then if the targets are met the title is conveyed after say 7-10 years. I suspect there won’t be many applicants and will be even fewer who have what it takes to see it through and earn the title to the land.

The numbers given for Union dead, maimed, and crippled is somewhere between 400,000 and 600,000 (dead and surviving amputees is about 385,000, with a nebulous “hundreds of thousands” crippled but surviving).
The number of slaves ultimately freed is about 4 million.
So, not quite parity. It’s about 10 slaves freed for each death or severe wound taken by Union soldiers. Personally, I wouldn’t ask for more, if I were the saved party.
By contrast, the War for American Independence killed or maimed about 50,000 colonial soldiers. The ratio of “set free” to dead and maimed there was 50 to 1.
What about people who are half such as Obama? Will their white half pay their black half?
