UConn Student Govt. Calls on School to Ban ICE After Multiple Students Lose Visas

“refuse to negotiate and/or settle with regard to changes to university policies and procedures sought by the Trump administration”

It’s funny how these students imagine that they have some kind of power over federal policy.

Campus Reform reports:

UConn student government backs ICE ban after visa revocations

Student government leaders at the University of Connecticut passed a resolution calling on the school to ban ICE officers from certain campus spaces following the revocation of multiple student visas.

The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) approved the measure one day after 13 students reportedly lost their visas on April 15, prompting concerns about federal immigration enforcement on campus.

USG President Andy Zhang wrote the resolution encouraging UConn to “join other universities in defending higher education.” The legislation was endorsed by a number of campus community members, including Phoenix Harper, USG’s Chief Diversity Officer.

During her campaign, Harper expressed her desire to “unite our student body in a manner that doesn’t merely ‘accept’ our differences, but embraces them.”

The resolution delineates a list of demands, including calling on the school to “ban ICE from all private spaces on campus,” “refuse to negotiate and/or settle with regard to changes to university policies and procedures sought by the Trump administration,” and “create a ‘Husky Defense Fund’…committed to meeting the needs of those impacted by current federal action or inaction, including but not limited to legal funds for students and faculty and restoring withdrawn research grants or federal funding.”

Zhang told The Daily Campus that the resolution aimed to reassure affected students that campus leaders support them, saying that USG wants to ensure students “knew that their student government would defend their community and protect their students.”

He also acknowledged uncertainty about how effective such measures would be. He stated that distinguishing between public and private campus spaces may not prevent ICE activity and said that the issue presents an “interesting question” for university officials.

There is no indication as to why these students’ visas were revoked. Presumably, they somehow violated the terms of admittance. It might be illuminating to know why these 13 students’ visas were pulled.

Also, it seems to me that the university’s responsibility regarding immigration is to ensure students are in possession of a valid student visa if they are non-citizens, not to assist them in contesting State Department or Homeland Security actions regarding their visas.

So they are handing out ICE whistles in Portland. I might get one and just start blowing it randomly while out on walkies. I wonder how many of the land lemmings will start to blow on theirs without checking to see what is actually happening. And, it might be a good way to reduce long waits in line at HD, just sayin.
