Security at Utah Valley University Under Scrutiny Following Kirk Assassination

“This is a police chief’s nightmare”

This horrible incident is going to cause lots of schools to rethink security for large events.

ABC News reports:

Fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk puts Utah Valley University’s security under scrutiny

The fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk has put Utah Valley University (UVU) under scrutiny as security experts said the location of the stage for the outdoor event where the conservative commentator was targeted was particularly vulnerable, and questioned why no metal detectors were in place and bags seemingly were not checked.

More than 3,000 people were on hand Wednesday as the 31-year-old Kirk, CEO and co-founder of the conservative grassroots organization Turning Point USA, spoke in an open-air courtyard on the Orem, Utah, campus, which is at the bottom of a bowl-shaped area surrounded by buildings, law enforcement officials said.

A gunman fired the deadly shot at Kirk with a high-powered bolt-action rifle from the rooftop of a campus building a substantial distance from where Kirk was speaking, hitting him in the throat, officials said.

The suspect in the shooting, identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested on Friday night after his father recognized him from surveillance images and video released by investigators, authorities said.

“This is a police chief’s nightmare,” Chief Jeff Long of the Utah Valley University campus police department said at a news conference on Wednesday.

Witnesses told ABC News that the event was not just open to the students on campus, but to the general public as well.

“This horrible incident is going to cause lots of schools to rethink security for large events.”

Which is bad news for us… because schools will start hosting only left wing speakers, because only right wing speakers get murdered.

For a couple of decades now, they’ve denied conservative speakers a venue because of “security issues.” Kirk’s assassination will just give them fuel.

And we need to shut that sh*t down, ASAP.

I really hope they don’t pursue this stupidity.
Basically, they’re saying they have to have a 1,000 yard perimeter with SWAT snipers and treat EVREY SINGLE SPEAKER like the President of the US. You can NOT live like that. Also, we saw even the Secret Service* can’t STOP a determined sniper. This is making Perfect the enemy of Good.

(* Can we call them something else, yet? That’s a stupid, Big Daddy Gov’t name, that just screams “Make us your tool of oppression!”)

drones are a great way to increase police patrol

sure it upsets the blmplo

but doing what they want gets the innocent people hurt

Utah, by deliberate decision, made the area not a “gun free zone”. Which was the right decision, even in hindsight. The place is still safer with normal people feeling free to carry than it was when only criminals would carry there.

In this instance there was nothing armed bystanders could have done, but had the shooter kept on shooting they would have been able to stop him, and keep the casualty count down.

And making it a “gun-free zone” wouldn’t have changed anything, unless it included the entire campus. (And that’s assuming it actually worked.)

…. “where the conservative commentator was targeted was particularly vulnerable, and questioned why no metal detectors were in place and bags seemingly were not checked.”

Unless the shooter’s nest was within the security perimeter, none of the above steps would make any difference. And if the perimeter were expanded another 100 yards or so…. 400 yards is still not an unusual range for that rifle and decent but not exceptional skills.

JUST HOW FAR OUT do the perimeters get set?
