Prof Convicted of Deadly Synagogue Bombing in France No Longer Employed at Carleton University

“His position drew the ire of the Jewish community in Canada and beyond”

It’s amazing what it takes to get fired from a job in higher education these days.

National Post reports:

Man convicted of deadly synagogue bombing in France not teaching at Carleton this semester

Hassan Diab, the Ottawa sociology professor who was convicted in absentia in 2023 of a deadly synagogue bombing in France, is “not currently employed” at Carleton University, the school says.

In the fall, Diab taught a course at Carleton called Social Justice in Action, using his own Canadian extradition case in his teachings. His position drew the ire of the Jewish community in Canada and beyond, with B’nai Brith Canada calling on Carleton to fire him.

“The university has ignored B’nai Brith’s formal request to terminate his position, allowing Diab to remain in a position of authority over students,” the Jewish advocacy group wrote on X.

Carleton confirmed this week that Diab no longer works there.

“Hassan Diab is a former part-time contract instructor who taught a course at the university last fall. He is not in the employment of Carleton. Please note that, other than current employment status, the university does not disclose personal employment information due to privacy considerations,” the university said in a statement Thursday.

South African-born billionaire Elon Musk, who also has held American and Canadian citizenship, brought renewed attention to the case recently, sharing a November X post from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, and asking: “A mass murderer is living free as a professor in Canada?”

Employing a terrorist? That says a lot about Canadian values. Way to go Canada!

Canada has become such a cesspool for extremism that it’s now considered a “win” to not have a convicted terrorist teaching at Carleton University.”

Lest we believe we are holier than they, we had a mass murderer running New York State, and absolutely could not unseat him until he grabbed some chick’s ass.

How did he get into Canada in the first place and why is he still there? Has France not requested extradition?

    He’s a Canadian citizen.

France requested his extradition in 2008; he fought it for six years, but was eventually sent to France in 2014.

Hence “In the fall, Diab taught a course at Carleton called Social Justice in Action, using his own Canadian extradition case in his teachings.”

In 2018 a judge dismissed the charges; the state appealed, but in the meantime he flew back to Canada. In 2021 the state won the appeal and he was ordered to stand trial, but he refused to return to France, so he was tried in absentia, convicted in 2023, and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Supposedly there’s an “international arrest warrant” out for him, which I assume really means an Interpol notice, but Canada has not yet acted on it. I assume and hope that France will eventually request extradition again, and he will fight it again.

I thought those warrants are only enforced against Israeli officials over whom the issuing court lacks jurisdiction.

Can someone explain why there wasn’t just as much ire & demands for his firing from outside the Jewish community?

As usual, whackademia loves to call itself the “bastion of civilization” except when it comes to law and order. The ivory tower will defend every terrorist, criminal, and hoodlum with a radical, crazy, and stupid idea that walks in through its portal as long as they profess anger and hatred against certain preferred target groups and damned be the consequences to society around them. If murder, mayhem, and malice occur, more’s the better for the ivory tower—means more foreign money and free publicity.
